The money that Elnora has saved for her college education is stolen, and when Mrs. Comstock goes to retrieve it from a suspect, she also learns of the duplicity of her husband, who had been courting a neighboring woman on the night he drowned. She begs forgiveness of Elnora, and the romance of Elnora and Phillip also begins to flourish.

- A police lieutenant and a female reporter investigate a series of murders comitted by a hooded killer in an old dark house.

So his loyal co-worker Phil decides to see what he can do to help everyone see what his friend has to offer.

Henny arrives with Judy and Marian, and the nightclub manager asks Henny to emcee the show. Though he is not sure himself what they can do, Henny introduces the girls and they make a hit in a dramatic sketch. (Simmer down, it's just a Monogram movie, and their nightclub attendees can react anyway director Phil Karlstein/Karlson wants them to.) Big-time movie producer R. J. signs them to a film contract. What does this have to do with the title, "A WAVE, a WAC and a Marine"? Judy joins the WAVES, Marian the WACS and Marty the Marines and all have two weeks before induction, and that is more than long enough to shoot a Monogram musical-within-a-Monogram musical and have a few days to spare.
- A temperamental movie star storms off the set of her latest picture in order to carry on a fling with an ambitious, publicity-hungry prizefighter.
- Fleeing a sheriff's posse after being unjustly accused as horse-thieves, Dave "Kansas Kid" Hill and Sagebrush Charlie are befriended by Ed Dawson, who is wounded while helping them escape. Kansas take Ed to a doctor in Tonto City, and Ed offers them jobs with his father's trail herd. They report to Dawson's foreman, Slavens, who instead sends them to the rival Coulter outfit. Suspicious to Slaven's motives, Ed sends Kansas and Charlie ahead to his father's ranch where, due to a misunderstanding, his sister Mary tries to ambush them. They sign up with Mr. Dawson just in time to hear the trail boss, Red trying to get the hands to quit Dawson and join Coulter. Kansas stops this but Mary has found a reward poster on Kansas and Charlie and notifies Sheriff Warner.
- Mrs. Hoyle, a retired school teacher, resides in a hotel bought by Morganti, a gangster, who evicts most of the tenants but allows Mrs. Hoyle and Angela Brown, a dance-hall girl to remain. Mrs. Hoyle's influence for good is felt quickly by Morganti and all of his henchmen with the exception of Rogan. Ther latter, despite Morganti's orders to go straight robs a market with his accomplice Slatterty. Mrs. Hoyle is arrested when the robbery money and jewels are found in her apartment.

- Outlaws attempting to kidnap Steve Blaine from a stagecoach are ran off by the sharpshooting of his sister, Sally and rescuers Jimmy Wakely and Cannonball Taylor. Steve is investigating his father's sudden death after charges of theft from the Sloan/Carson mine. Sloan is killed after Wakely learns that ore is being smuggled across the Mexican border into the mine, and then sold at the higher U.S. prices.
- Dragging along her spineless boyfriend Johnny, hare-brained secretary Kitty O'Day is unstoppable as she tries to determine her boss's murderer. In her exuberance she and Johnny keep running into more corpses, as well as the unbelievabley inept team of Inspector Clancy and his sergeant, Mike. Their luck seems to run out, though, as they deliver themselves right into the hands of the murderer.

- Mike Wien, an Alaskan bush pilot operating the the Bering Sea area, makes friends with John W. Wetherby, posing as a wealthy American businessman. But, in reality, he is a Russian spy on his way to Siberia carrying microfilms of U.S. defense installations.

- Government agent Tex Whitedeer and his sidekick Slim are sent to investigate some supposed Indian raids on the freighting outfit owned by Joe Lane, as well as to pick out the location for the junction of a new railway. The raids continue and Tex begins to suspect Lieutenant James, head of the Army battalion stationed nearby, since he is certain the Indians had nothing to do with the attacks. Tex sets a trap for James and the other suspects, who in turn fear Tex and determine to get him out of the way. The capture Honey Lane, Lane's daughter, so that Tex will take the trail and can be ambushed. Tex is captured, but he and Honey escape in time to prevent another raid and, with the aid of Chief Grey Cloud, his adopted father, Tex captures James and his gang.

- The Range Busters help a young man framed as the leader of an outlaw gang that has been holding up stage coaches.
- Prospector Jeff Malloy rescues Doris Devlin, owner of a trading post, from an ambush planned by her uncle, Kilburn, who is trying to scare her out of the territory so that he can continue his counterfeiting operations. Jeff is framed by the gang, but he and bumbling Marshal Luke Winslow get on the trail after Doris is kidnapped by her uncle's gang.
- Hoot Gibson and the Trailblazers take jobs as telephone linemen to get the goods on a local banker who is the chief of a band of counterfeiters.
- Race car driver Frank Cermak is in love with Jane Harris. Jane and her parents watch Frank win a tight race from Bill Peters, an army lieutenant on leave. Peters tries to foul Frank, and Frank beats him in a fist fight after the race. Frank is drafted into the army and (against staggering and overwhelming odds) finds Lt. Peters to be his commanding officer. Jane's father refuses Frank permission to marry Jane, but Jane tells him she will marry him regardless. Needing money, Frank has his army buddy, Matt Hall, enter him in a race. Peters, making life miserable for Frank, confines him to the post, but he sneaks away, enters the race, and crashes. Peters, as life and luck would have it in a "Slash" Clements movie, is on hand and disciplines him severely, causing Frank to stand up Jane on their wedding day. But, since all the luck in a Clements movie isn't bad - just the scripts, the post arsenal catches fire and Frank saves Peters' life. The latter brings Frank and Jane together, and arranges for them to be married immediately.
- When Jerry Van Dyke, a young debutante, decides to marry Barney, an Army corporal, whom she met at a USO dance, her family objects and consequently, the couple are unable to obtain a marriage license because Jerry doesn't come of age for four days. When Barney leaves for camp in Kentucky, Jerry follows him there with Louise, the young Army bride of Mike, one of the soldiers in Barney's unit. At the bus station, Jerry is befriended by Mrs. Shannahan and her brood of six children, who are on their way to see her husband, Sgt. Shannahan. In Kentucky, Barney meets Jerry at the bus station, but they are still unable to get married because Barney's outfit is leaving in five minutes on maneuvers. When Barney's unit finally returns from maneuvers, Jerry and Barney's marriage is once again thwarted because Barney must leave for Chicago immediately and from there, he is to board a train bound for the West coast. Jerry promises to meet him there, and with the help of Mrs. Lowry, the general's wife, she obtains a plane ticket to Chicago. In Chicago, Jerry meets Barney between trains. Mrs. Lowry has arranged for a minister to be in the cab, and the young couple are married en route to another train station, from which Barney is to catch his troop train to the coast. When he misses the train, the general kindly gives the newlyweds tickets on a faster train, so that he can meet his company when the troop train arrives there. The couple board their train, and look forward to their one night together before Barney is shipped overseas.

- Rancher Terry Dugan returns to Brentwood, ans is met by his sweetheart Helen Frazer and Cahoose. Unknown to Helen, her dad, town banker Bob Frazer is being blackmailed by Frank Gilmore into revealing routes of stages carrying payrolls. Johnny Mack, working for the State Protective League, fools the outlaws by filling a paybox with old newspapers and foils two attacks on him and Cahoose. Johnny is suspicious of Frazer, but the latter admits nothing. Gilmore's henchmen Pacos is jailed by Johnny after he is caught attacking a freighter. Gilmore forces Frazer to sneak a gun to Pacos. Johnny prevents Frazer from shooting Gilmore from ambush and Frazer reveals that he had once been a partner of Gilmore, and the latter had embezzled money from a client, for which Frazer was blamed and jailed. Helen, unaware of his past, overhears his confession and forgives him. As a ruse, Frazer is jailed, and gets Gilmore to go to the bank for a phony confession note.
- Johnny Fraser (Johnny Downs) leaves his mother (Helen MacKellar) in their small home town and sets out for the big city. He obtains a job with a large firm of architects. Steve Carson (Archie Robbins), a fellow employee, is constantly flaunting the money he has won at the race track. Johnny also bets the races, but loses heavily and takes some of the firm's money to cover his losses. Steve also introduces Johnny to Madelon Kirby (Rosalind Keith), a gold-digging night club singer. When the firm's boss McNeil (Holmes Herbert) learns that Johnny has embezzled some money, he fires him and has him jailed. Johnny's mother comes to his aid, but he cannot find work when he is released. Through Steve Carson, Johnny becomes the head of a shady firm, Business Engineers, and is making a lot of money. Madelon returns and she and Johnny are married, but he is unaware that Steve is not only double-crossing him in the business but with Madelon also.
- Other than a statement in the opening credits that the story owes its origin to a John Greenleaf Whittier poem, this film has little or no connection to the poem for which it shares its title. In this film, Kenneth Hale, a pampered, snobbish young boy, is sent by his father, John Hale, who has served time in prison for a crime he did not commit, down to the country farm of an old friend, Calvin Whittaker. The barefoot, honest, and plucky Billy Whittaker, his girlfriend Pige Bennett, and Kenneth get involved with a "haunted" house and a gang of crooks, while Billy helps make a "better man" out of Kenneth.
- In Old California, a young Frenchman transporting a chest full of silver travels by stagecoach to San Marino, to complete a complex business deal. The stagecoach is ambushed by a band of men whose leader, a mysterious bandido known as Cisco (Gilbert Roland), claims the silver is money that was extorted over a period of years from the poor people of California. The bandits take the money and escape, but Cisco stays behind with the Frenchman -- who, it turns out, is actually a lovely mademoiselle, Jeanne DuBois (Ramsay Ames). She follows him to the bandit's lair, where Cisco tells her he intends to return the stolen money to the poor people. The two rivals are irresistibly drawn to each other, however, and as a token of love Cisco offers to return the money to Jeanne instead. Now she must decide whether to complete her business deal, or to comply with Cisco's wishes and redistribute the wealth.
- John Dawson loses control of his factory when he is crippled in an accident caused by a rival. Destitute, he travels the country organizing the homeless to help him regain control of his steel mill.

- Lamont Cranston, aka the Shadow, has his hands full as the murder of blackmailing reporter Jeff Mann is blamed on him. Not only does the real murderer seem one step ahead of him as Lamont tries to discover his identity, but he is continually hampered from gaining crucial evidence by his jealous, interfering fiancée Margo Lane. Cranston perseveres and is rewarded with the clue he needs at one of Mann's victims' nightclubs.
- A gang of rustlers blackmails young Joe Collins into helping them, Sandy poses undercover as a janitor in the leader's saloon, and Buck impersonates a well-known crooked fence.
- A veteran, Joe Hilton (Warren Douglas), returns from the war to find that his brother Jeffrey Hilton (George Meeker), a gangster, has been killed. His quest for revenge leads him to take over his brother's illegal operations but his sweetheart, Lynn Turner (Ramsay Ames), persuades him to change his ways and return to the straight and narrow.
- A young man goes to work in a logging camp to fulfill a boyhood ambition and a jealous loggers rigs things to make him appear to be an incompetent bungler. But he proves himself successfully conveying an injured workman to the hospital in a careening truck, whose brakes have been tampered with, down a mountainside.
