- In Las Vegas, a squad of forensic investigators are trained to solve crimes by meticulously examining the evidence. They employ advanced technology and their rationality to detect the perpetrators.

He was considered a bothersome beggar, especially by a bouncer.

The two believe that they are witnessing a case of spontaneous human combustion. To prove it, Sara decides to conduct an experiment by herself.
- Grissom receives a video tape from an inmate called Frank Damon who is on trial for the arson which resulted in his wife and son's death. On the tape, Damon claims that he is innocent and asks Grissom to help him. Grissom agrees to re-examine the evidence, despite knowing that this will anger Ecklie who originally worked on the case. Nick and Catherine, meanwhile, work on the case of a young man found shot in the head inside his car.
- A kidnapping case becomes unusually personal to the usually detached Grissom. The 4-month old baby, Zach Anderson, was allegedly kidnapped from his home. A ransom note, found by his mother, is left in his crib. Many things seem strange about this case as more evidence are analyzed. When Zach's body is found on a nearby golf course, the team is sure that his death is no mere accident.
- While investigating the disappearance of Margaret Shorey at a supermarket, Grissom and Catherine stumble upon a serial killer who claims to have killed five women in supermarkets located along the I-15. Sara and Warrick are given the case of the death of a man who, his brother claims, was killed by a burglar. Sara soon suspects that the brother is not telling the truth. Nick is specially requested to solve a case of harassment.

Catherine, Nick and Detective Vega learn that Jasper and his wife Linda had lost their jobs. When they find a one-million dollar life insurance on behalf of Linda, his wife becomes their prime suspect.

Stokes looks into the death of Stacy Warner who is found in the middle of the desert but is determined to have drowned. She was a an extreme sports enthusiast out on a challenging trek but she seemed ill-prepared for the route she took.
- A taxi driver accidentally runs over a teenage boy. He is later brutally beaten by a gang who thinks he is running away. Grissom and Sara works on the case and finds that the boy was dead prior to being hit from a stab wound.
- A body is found in the body farm. He died from what looks like a bullet wound, yet Dr. Robbins and Grissom can't find any bullet fragments. Instead, they found bits of ground beef inside the wound track. The team links this death to an arson case. The investigation takes a turn when the 12-year-old daughter of the deceased's fiancée has been a victim of sexual assault for some time. Back at the lab, Sara asks for a 6-month leave, citing that she doesn't feel at ease at work with her co-workers, especially with her boss, Grissom.

Luckily Lieutenant Horatio Caine of the Miami CSI team takes brilliant charge, realizing it's the MO of a Florida serial killer of socialite couples, who spared the girl but eliminated all other witnesses and clearly isn't done yet, even sets a trap for the police.
- Grissom studies Ananda's Vegas Buddhist monastery where four Thai monks were fatally shot in the forehead. Forensics also show the presence of hostile restaurant owner Peter Hutchins Sr. and his son, Pete Jr. Eventually, possible theft is considered. Catherine's mentor Jimmy Tadero falsifies evidence concerning the case of violent repeat-offender Dwight Kelso, who maintains his innocence on his deathbed.
- Boxer LaRoi Steele didn't survive his third fight against Javier Molina, whom he defeated in both earlier encounters. Grissom works out what happened exactly and why after learning how that Vegas show discipline really works. Nick wanted a solo case but isn't tickled-pink with a jewelry theft, yet does it well enough to counter abuse from ingrate victims. A gang fight involving an arrogant 'modern' gangster turns out to tie in as well.
- A body falls out of the sky, literally. The cause of death is suffocation but the body bears no signs of strangulation.
