But the idyll is deceptive: while Veronika's son Stefan gets along very well with Sebastian, daughter Merle doesn't like it at all that her mother got involved with a man again so soon after the death of her beloved father. She also doesn't trust Sebastian - Merle is convinced that he's only after her mother's money and is trying to grab the hotel. Merle's grandmother Dora, who still uses every opportunity to get at her daughter-in-law, has similar fears. And now the old lady steadfastly refuses to reveal the whereabouts of all the money. Veronika is completely in despair, as the future of the "Schwarzwaldhof" depends on the success of the renovation. What nobody suspects: Dora is addicted to gambling, she gambled away all her money playing roulette. Meanwhile, Merle finds out through Sebastian's son Tom, who is visiting the "Schwarzwaldhof", that Sebastian has been fired from his employer and is in massive financial difficulties due to his divorce. Veronika is amazed when Merle tells her this news. Deeply disappointed by Sebastian's insincerity, she turns away from him.
