- The #MeToo movement has been at the crest of the wave for a year, but it started much earlier. The hashtag "me too" was first used by African-American feminist Tarana Burke in 2006 to shake consciences about widespread sexual harassment. In the aftermath of the Wenstein case, actress Alyssa Milano reinvigorated the hashtag and within 24 hours 12 tweets were posted. millions of times. A year ago, an article in the New York Times brought to light the sexual assaults of the all-powerful Hollywood producer, Harvey Wenstein. The victims broke the silence. The first to accuse him of rape was the actress Rose McGowan, but other stars such as Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow, Uma Thurman or Salma Hayek later denounced abuse. Shortly after, the New Yorker added other cases and the strength of the movement was recognized by Time magazine, which chose #MeToo as person of the year. The accusations of harassment also reached the heart of the European Parliament and this week the spokesperson for the United Left in the European Parliament resigned because the formation had not opened an ex officio file in response to two complaints. Hollywood gave global visibility to the fight against sexual abuse and one of the most notorious milestones was Oprah Winfrey's speech at the Golden Globes gala. The actresses dressed in black came accompanied by activists and took advantage of the media showcase to shout with forcefulness against machismo. The African-American presenter addressed "the powerful and brutal men" who have dominated the film industry and politics to announce that "their time is up", in English "Time's up", the name of another initiative to help victims of sexual abuse.v
