- Birmingham Daily writes an article about Rene. M.E. and Colliar's neighbor sues them. They counter sue for chasing Kelly and Davis with a rake. Past: M.E. is worried about the Cuban Missile Crisis and Rene question their friendship.
- M.E.'s plans for a stress-free Yuletide are spoiled when her parents discover that Kelly is pregnant; Rene's hands are full organizing a politically correct Lawyers in Politics holiday party, while also entertaining her family.
- In the present, M.E. confronts her uncle Jimmy after a cross burns on their lawn. Davis informs M.E. that Jimmy's website has a hit list with Rene's name on it. Rene takes Jimmy to court and calls M.E. to the witness stand. In the past: M.E. and Colliar bring Rene a hamster to cheer her up, but it gets loose in the house. Jimmy and his partner pull Sarah over and threaten her and Rene's lives.

- Present: As M.E. visits Fillmore to speak with Davis's teachers about his slipping grades in the aftermath of the tornado, she is caught in the middle of a school shooting; shocked and devastated by having to watch a student die in the gunfire, M.E. turns to food for comfort; after Rene suffers an arrhythmia while they're on a date, Turk insists that she see a cardiologist; on the strength of the article M.E. writes about the shooting, Glenn offers her a weekly column; Rene inspires her neighbor Muriel to take the positive step of creating an animal rescue organization after Muriel's beloved dog is accidentally put to death at the pound. Past: Colliar is bullied and beaten when he supports Rene's running for Freshman Class Representative; after trying to help Colliar during the beating and getting a black eye herself, M.E. is angry when he succumbs to pressure and votes against Rene.
- Present: While on route to a family reunion, Sara collapses and is sent to the hospital; Past: Rene and M.E. accidentally cause a fire using firecrackers which make the townspeople believe the incident was racially motivated.
- In the present, Renee gets set up on a blind date with a man named Michael, whom she finds strange and doesn't understand how to take her rejection. M.E.'s sister Theresa (Delta Burke) comes to visit and M.E. and Colliar continue to have relationship problems. In the past, M.E. and Renee pull a prank on Theresa that results in Renee being injured and M.E.'s mom taking her to the hospital.
- Present: M.E. and Rene's childhood friend offends Rene after taking part in a bigoted prank during a parade; Past: Rene gets her first crush and M.E. accidentally breaks Colliar's leg during a soapbox race.
