- Sam has a job to start but before that Daphne drives him to Cheltenham to meet Nanny Parker, with whom he gets on famously and who advises Daphne that she has a good man in him. On the way back they get lost in the fog having had to take a diversion and, as they are cuddling together for warmth, something happens that Sam has wanted for a long time...
- Though Nick can do without Angie going on about her time as a model, a day at the seaside with their parents and Joe seems to be a pleasant diversion. Once on the beach and having got her out of an awkward situation Sam prevails upon Daphne to go sailing with him but when she falls overboard and he saves her life by giving her the kiss of life her response is a typical mixture of gratitude and accusation.
- Daphne is dismayed that Angie is returning to work but cheered to get a dinner invitation from Penelope, a girl whom Angie hated at school but whom Daphne admires as she married the wealthy , boorish Nigel. Daphne is appalled to find that Sam has also been invited. However when Nigel tries to scam Daphne out of money for a fraudulent investment Sam puts aside his dislike of her to do the decent thing.
- With Angie made redundant Nick's offer of a gallery display comes at a good time and he and Sam go to the pub to celebrate. Whilst they are out Giles, now on the run, turns up, seeking refuge with Daphne who eventually relents. However Sam is returning with his friend Wilf, who is homeless, and, even given Giles' pledge to give himself up next day, there is a very full house.
- Angie and Nick are off to Paris for their wedding anniversary, taking a beautiful candlestick Giles has given Daphne to give them as a present. Unfortunately it turns out to be stolen - along with lots of other valuables, which - unlike Giles - are found in his flat. Things are bad enough for Daphne but when baby Joe gives her a health scare she has every reason to be glad of Sam's support.
- Four weeks have passed and Daphne is still hostile to Sam, prompting Angie to threaten her with eviction unless she changes her attitude. When Daphne entertains her friend Elspeth to tea Angie forces her to include Sam in the party, but things go very wrong when Elspeth discovers the dead snake Sam has brought home for his new hobby of taxidermy.
- Rock star Flash Leopard asks Nick to his country mansion to shoot his album cover and Angie and Sam persuade Daphne to make up the numbers. Daphne is instantly critical of Flash's anarchic lyrics which are at odds with his accumulated wealth and is unusually grateful to Sam who rescues her after a riding mishap. Sam is outraged to hear that Flash wants sex with Angie in order to give Nick the job and proves himself to be a hero all round to secure the contract.
- Sam is having to prop up both Wilf, dejected that his acting career has yet to take off, and Nick, who feels inferior as Angie flies out to the Seychelles. Indeed both Daphne and Sam are in agreement that she should not go and come near to sharing an intimate moment. Daphne also makes it clear to Giles, who has staged a rooftop protest to get her to visit him in prison, that she never wants to see him again.
- Giles is serving a three month sentence but Daphne rips up the begging letter he sends asking her to visit. Despite Angie's attempts to speak up for him she is again cool towards Sam, believing his recent kindness was purely a ploy to have his wicked way with her. Nick's photographs are exhibited at a gallery to scornful remarks from pompous critics but Angie is spotted by a famous fashion photographer who offers her a three day shoot as a model in the Seychelles - and she accepts.
- Daphne accompanies Giles to the police station and he is granted bail, informing her that in court he will conduct his own defence. Meanwhile Sam goes to the zoo with Wilf and acquires a dead crocodile, which he brings home for stuffing. Daphne is not amused to find it in their bath.
- After intervening on behalf of Angie, who believes Nick is getting too conceited, Sam makes a bet with Daphne - if Giles is found guilty he will take her to the pub. At court Giles defends himself in a melodramatic way but is still found guilty. Shocked to hear that he has a string of previous Daphne accompanies Sam to an idyllic country pub - and enjoys the experience.
- Daphne has sold her house in Cheltenham and offers Sam some of the proceeds if he will move out. Sam counters by saying that he agrees - but only if he fails to make her laugh. They then spend a day together, in the pub, visiting Sam's wife's grave and at a restaurant. Next day Sam succeeds not only in making Daphne laugh but getting her to admit why she is so bitter.
- Sam settles in to the basement and proves himself a champion nappy changer, though he is less successful at winning over reluctant flatmate Daphne. She is also displeased to hear that her grandson will be called Joe and not Jeremy and will not be christened. Daphne hopes to get her vicar friend Gerald on her side and is appalled when he and Sam hit it off totally, leading to Gerald upbraiding her for being a snob.
- Photographer Nick Tyler and his wife Angie have just bought a house for them and their new-born son but want to let the basement flat to improve their finances. Nick's father Sam, recently made homeless, is keen to move in but, unbeknown to him and Nick, Angie's mother Daphne also arranges to take the flat to be the child's nanny. Daphne is refined and hypercritical. Sam is down to earth and unassuming. As co-tenants they will prove to be a very mismatched couple.
- Sam unveils his newly-stuffed penguin, which he calls Giles, much to Daphne's displeasure. Having established that Sam does not intend stuffing a dead elephant Giles proposes a poker game with the loser relinquishing all claim to Daphne and moving to Australia. Giles wins but Angie discovers that he has cheated and persuades Daphne to do the right thing by telling Sam.
- Angie, Nick and Joe are away for the weekend and, having eaten some condemned pastries, Sam reckons that if he feigns illness Daphne will be nice to him. He even persuades his zoo-keeper friend Wilf to pose as a doctor but when Daphne injures her toe Sam pretends to expose Wilf as a fraud to impress her. She is unusually grateful and gives him a reward - which proves to be just desserts.
- Sam is hoping to acquire a dead penguin to add to his taxidermy collection and predictably Daphne is not amused, However she is charmed to meet Major Giles Bradshaw, who has moved into a flat across the road and who invites her a candle-lit supper. She sees him as a soul-mate, not because they are both snobs but because they share a dislike of Sam.
- Daphne is taking her driving test but needs Sam's help twice over - firstly to massage her back after her accident on the golf course and then to lend her his battered Mini as the driving instructor and his car are indisposed. Daphne passes with flying colours and she and Sam celebrate - perhaps unwisely in Daphne's case. Meanwhile Angie is still annoyed with Nick for allowing Debbie to be his backer.
- Nick is taking Angie out to celebrate his getting a contract to work for a fashion catalogue and Sam agrees to mind baby Joe. Daphne is being wined and dined by Giles in his flat and she compliments him on his mastery of Chinese cuisine. However next day he is exposed as a fraud when she spots the empty cartons from the takeaway in his dustbin.
- Sam is curious as to where Daphne is sneaking off in the afternoons and follows her - discovering that she is taking driving lessons. He takes her for a surprise trip, playing golf and ends up having to carry her to the car when her back gives way. Angie is still fighting off Rob but a jealous Nick contrives to make her feel envious by introducing old flame Debbie as his new business backer.
- Angie returns from a photo shoot, resisting the advances of a photographer to support Nick as he writes and illustrates an article about Daphne and Sam's living arrangement. Sam is finding Rhonda too clinging and, back living with Daphne, is keen for a better relationship with her as he admits to a radio phone-in. Quite by accident Daphne hears the show, changing her attitude to Sam as a result.
- Following a conversation with Rhonda Daphne has to accept that she is jealous of Sam having another girlfriend and, after a heart to heart with Angie and another letter from wise old Nanny Parker, she becomes increasingly less hostile, sharing a walk in the park, where they are photographed by Nick for his article. Angie meanwhile is resisting the attentions of Rob.
- Daphne is starting to warm more and more to Sam, confiding in him a childhood trauma and complimenting him on his delicious omelette. Thus emboldened Sam breaks up with Rhonda, who does not take it well. Nick offers his photo story of Daphne and Sam to a tabloid editor but it is rejected and he finds himself having to make peace with Daphne.
- As Angie's new career as a model further frustrates Nick Daphne travels to Cheltenham to visit her old nanny, who is terminally ill. Much to Daphne's surprise the old lady is living her final six months to the full and advises Daphne that she too should unbend and particularly should seize her chance of happiness with Sam, who she has heard is a good man who cares for her. Unfortunately when Daphne, having taken these wise words on board, returns home she finds Sam about to move in next door with new friend Rhonda.
