- In liberal San Francisco a conservative cartoonist tries to keep his two daughters, who rent an apartment below him, safe. In season 6 the cartoonist buys a small-town newspaper in Tiburon.
- A trio of black youths learn about life, love, friendship, credit cards, gambling, and a variety of other things while growing up in an inner city.

- Henry and Muriel hire two ex-convicts to repair a damaged wall in their kitchen. Meanwhile, Jackie was tasked to deposit a large sum of money for her work at the bank. When the bank closes before she gets there, Jackie had to take the cash home. As a result, Henry tries to hide the cash, not wanting the ex-cons to spot it.
- Rich Holland, Muriel's old drummer, is in town. Rich takes a liking to Jackie, which does not exactly thrill Muriel.
- An attractive messenger, after being out all night, passes out in the Rush's bedroom leaving Henry and Monroe to think fast on how to get her out of the house before Muriel gets home.
- Henry treats Jackie and Sara to a ski weekend in Aspen.
- Sara rents her apartment to a film crew for a movie, which involves live animals. Unfortunately, one of the animals, a male lion, escapes and ventures into Henry and Muriel's apartment during their dinner engagement with Arthur Wainwright.
- When infant Andrew is exposed to the chicken pox, Henry is forced to quarantine. Reluctantly, he agrees to live temporarily at Iris's apartment.
- A guy who was pursuing Jackie years ago comes back to town. When Jackie learns this, she makes herself scarce. Sara meets him when he arrives and is amazed by how great he looks. She makes a play for him and they go out. When Jackie learns of this, she's upset.
- Sara comes home from a concert angry at Monroe because he didn't stand up to someone who took their seats. She takes him to an assertiveness training class which does wonders for his self-confidence but it also makes him pushy, arrogant and rude to the point that he is told never to set foot in the Rush home again.
- The Rush's hire a medium to conduct a séance for Miss Rafkin, as she thinks her late brother is trying to communicate with her from the other side.
- Henry and Muriel decide not to find out what the gender of their baby is; however, Henry's father wants to know. He drags Monroe with him to help break into the doctor's office to find out.
