- The people of Thrums ostracize 12-year-old Grizel and her mother, known as The Painted Lady, until newcomer Tommy Sandys, a highly-imaginative boy, comes to the girl's rescue and they become inseparable friends. Six years later Tommy returns from London, where he has achieved success as an author, and finds that Grizel still loves him. In a sentimental gesture he proposes, but she, realizing that he does not love her, rejects him. In London, Tommy is lionized by Lady Pippinworth, and he follows her to Switzerland. Having lost her mother and believing that Tommy needs her, Grizel comes to him but is overcome by grief to see his love for Lady Pippinworth. Remorseful, Tommy returns home, and after his careful nursing Grizel regains her sanity.

In short order Aunt, Grandma, brother, boyfriend, and even the parrot become superstars, but Angela is still unemployed.
- Two inmates and a cleaning girl at a home for struggling artists achieve success and fame when they pool their talents and produce a smash hit Broadway musical. Edgar (Monte Blue), the playwright, is in love with April (Madge Kennedy), the ex- leading lady, but she doesn't discover that she loves him until it's almost too late.
- Despairing of any chance to marry his love Nettie Vollar because of a bitter feud between his father and her grandfather, Gerrit Ammidon sails to China to "get away from it all". While in Shanghai he rescues a beautiful young woman being attacked by a gang of street toughs. She turns out to be Taou Yuen, a Manchu princess. Gerrit discovers that she will be put to death unless she finds a husband, and he agrees to marry her. They return to Java Head, the Ammidon family home in Salem, Massachusetts, but Gerrit's "homecoming" has unexpected consequences.
- A family of Polish refugees tries to survive in post-World War I Germany. For a while it seems that they are making it, but soon the economic and political deterioration in the country begins to take their toll.
- Hector Colbert sues his wife Marjorie for a divorce after Peters, an admirer of Marjorie, deliberately compromises her. Colbert's lawyer, Daniel Farr, believing that Marjorie's behavior was wrong, gets the divorce, but he ruins the reputation of a fun-loving woman who was simply bored with her husband. Later, she and Farr meet; she plots a revenge against the lawyer but confesses her fabrication when she realizes that she loves him.
- Luigi, a traveling-show strongman, saves Carmelita from drowning and persuades her to join him. When Luigi kills his assistant, Giuseppe, in a jealous rage, they flee to Algiers, where Luigi joins the Foreign Legion and installs Carmelita as proprietress of a cafe. Marvin, an American legionnaire, falls in love with Carmelita, who has become a favorite of the regiment, but she remains loyal to Luigi out of gratitude. Luigi frames Marvin, who is punished by the authorities. In the ensuing fight between Marvin and Luigi, the strongman is getting the better of the American when Carmelita, who has learned of Luigi's intent to marry Madame La Cantinière, stabs her benefactor. The legionnaires decide to attribute Luigi's death to an Arab; Marvin and Carmelita are united.
- Boardinghouse servant Adele Clark is unexpectedly awarded the ownership of a certain piece of New York City property known as Clark's Field. The trustees send her to a finishing school, whose headmistress, Signorina Vitale, persuades Adele and her sweetheart, Tim Sullivan, that she should travel in Europe. Adele's new riches cause her to lose her sense of proportion, and she soon is involved with a fast set indulging in the jazz life. Even Tim cannot curb Adele's extravagance, and he returns to America while Adele marries Italian fortune-hunter Prince Arnolfo Da Pescia. When a will is discovered naming Tim as the rightful heir to Clark's Field, Adele and Arnolfo hurry to New York, and Arnolfo tries to steal the will, then dies in a hotel fire. All dispute over the land is ended when Tim and Adele are united.
- Ben Jordan runs away after accidentally setting fire to a barn in his small New England community. He returns when his mother dies to find that she has left everything to her ward, Jane Crosby.
- Molly Townsend, engaged to Luis Riccardi, learns from Capt. John Locke half an hour before the wedding that Riccardi is a thief and a smuggler. Locke, Riccardi's rival for Molly, persuades Molly to sail away with him in his boat bound for South America. He is thrown overboard by the cutthroat crew, and crew leader Jordan nearly makes her his victim before Locke, who has saved himself, rescues her. Riccardi and Jordan, who murdered a man in the Townsend home and stole a diamond necklace, are both jailed.
- During the war Owen Bradley, pleading that his leave had been canceled, fails to visit his home and sweetheart Toppie in England but spends his time with Madame Vervier, with whom he is infatuated. Owen is killed in action but in accordance with his promise, his brother Giles takes Madame Vervier's daughter to his mother in England, where she soon becomes a favorite and finally engaged to a viscount. In the meantime, Giles, who has always loved Toppie, tries in vain to win her and she finally enters a convent. To prevent her and aid Giles, Madame Vervier's daughter Alix tells Toppie the truth and Toppie denounces Madame Vervier as a bad woman. Giles has already learned that his brother was only one of many with whom Madame had affairs. This truth finally becomes known in England and the viscount breaks his engagement with Alix. When Toppie enters a convent, Giles realizes that he really loves Alix and returning to France finds Andre is attentive to her. Giles soon learns the truth that Alix has always loved him, so he takes her in his arms. - Moving Picture World.
- Richard Gaylord, Jr. is a modern Lothario who has so many sweethearts that his father does not know what to do with him. Tired of paying to get his son out of one romantic entanglement after another, the elder Gaylord sends his son to the Basque region of France, believing that the women there will accept attentions only from their own people. Almost immediately, a local girl, Yvonne Hurja becomes infatuated with Richard, whom she sees as being able to help her break free from the unwanted attention of local guardsman Julio. A rivalry grows between Richard and Julio.
- A young woman dreams of becoming a great actress. When her boyfriend starts to flirt with an actual actress, she becomes jealous and decides to fight with her rival.
- King Serge IV of Molvania (Menjou) comes to Manhattan to conduct business with Arthur Trent (Kilgour), but instead goes to Coney Island, where he meets Gladys Humphreys (Love) and John Rockland (Shaw). John, not knowing the king's royal identity, invites him to his home at Little Falls, New Jersey. The king falls in love with Gladys, but Trent catches them in a compromising situation, and blackmails the king into completing their business deal. The king leaves the United States and Gladys forever.
- Easy-Money Charley, the best fake crippled beggar in New York, loses his beloved dog and adopts a dying prostitute's daughter to fill the empty place in his heart. But his fellow crooks and dissemblers mock him for sentimentality, and he disowns the child in order to bring her up secretly in the safety of a distant suburb. He brings her up as a young lady in ignorance of her true history or of his; but when he discovers that her affections have taken an unexpected slant, it brings about an end to their tranquil life, a crisis of conscience, and an opportunity for the sinister 'White-Eye' to take a hand...
- Tom Clark, the part owner of a luckless gas station in New York, returns to his place of birth for Old Home Week, posing as the millionaire president of the Amalgamated Oil Co. He is chosen as the orator for the homecoming banquet and given complete financial control over an oil well drilled in the town by Coleman and Barton, a pair of oily swindlers. Tom discovers that the well is a fake and has it connected secretly with the local reservoir. A wire from Tom's partner is intercepted, and Tom is exposed as a fraud. Coleman and Barton are about to leave town when Tom fakes a gusher and quickly sells the well back to the swindlers at a profit. The swindlers realize that they have been outsmarted, and their anger convinces the townspeople that Tom has acted in the best interests of the community. Tom is again the toast of the town, feted by its inhabitants and rewarded with the kisses of his sweetheart.
- Druggist Elmer Prettywillie is sleeping. A woman rings the night bell only to buy a two-cent stamp. Then garbage collectors waken him. Next it's firemen on a false alarm. And then a real fire.
- An unlucky inventor's attempt to demonstrate his break-proof glass at a convention goes humiliatingly wrong, but his luck may be about to change when he runs into pretty young woman on the train ride home.
- Elmer Stone, quarterback of the 1899 Colton College football team vows to remain a student until Colton beats its biggest rival, State University. Twenty-seven years later, Elmer is still in school and is a classmate of his son, Jack. Other than driving a milk wagon in his spare time, Jack is also the quarterback of the football team. A matter of his eligibility comes up but he is cleared and goes out to do-or-die for Colton against State University. Maybe they will win The Big Game, and Jack's father can get a life...and a job.
- In a run down New York Tenament, a chorine named Orchid lives with her overprotective brother Buddy, who sees to it that no uptown Casanovas get a chance at seducing his sister. At a New Year's Eve party the two are separated in the festivities, and millionaire playboy Brian Alden meets her, and they start seeing each other. Against her brother's wishes, Orchid, at Alden's behest, takes charm school-type instructions on how to be a society lady, and she seems to be turning into a snob. Alden regrets it, and after promising to allow her to be herself, gets Buddy's okay to marry her.
- Happy Farrell is caught trying to hold up two men--Charles Nelson, theatrical producer, and Joseph Murdock, a rich artist. He exonerates himself by relating his tribulations as a song-and-dance man and how he gave his last penny to an old woman and her daughter, Leola, also a dancer. Nelson agrees to give both Happy and Leola a chance on Broadway. Leola is a success, but Happy fails and goes west to try his luck. When he returns successful, he finds that Leola, now engaged to Murdock, has become a star. Happy yearns to return to the song and dance circuit and does so.
- At a cabaret, steel worker Dundee Reilly meets Mary Malone, sister of former boxing champion Pat Malone. When Mary is accosted by prizefighter Killer Agerra, Dundee knocks his rival unconscious. Under Pat's guidance, Dundee trains for a scheduled bout with Agerra. However, Dundee is framed for a shooting, and spends his prison term working in a quarry and developing his muscles. Following his release, Dundee substitutes for another fighter against Agerra. Acting on intuition, Mary informs Dundee that he was framed by his opponent, spurring him on to win in the final round.
- Alfred Sava-Goiu, who, after being dumped by his sweetheart, philosophically decides to end it all by jumping into the Seine. But he lands in a passing boat owned by the Countess Elvire. Falling in love with his savior, Alfred returns the compliment by rescuing the Countess from a precipitous waterfall. The Countess' lover Prince Alado resents Alfred's presence and challenges him to a duel.

- Jeanne Eagels plays the bored and restless Leslie Crosbie who turns to another man, Geoffrey Hammond (Herbert Marshall) for attention when neglected by her husband Robert (Reginald Owen). Robert decides to go out for the evening to pick up a new rifle. Leslie's calm vanishes as she awaits an answer to a letter she has written Hammond. He has found a new love - a beautiful unscrupulous native woman Li Ti (Lady Tsei Mei) and has discarded Leslie.
- A burlesque star seeks to keep her convent-raised daughter away from her low-down life and abusive lover/stage manager.
- Yvonne, proprietor of a Paris gown shop, marries Pierre, a poor artist, concealing from him an affair she had with Rigaud, an elderly boulevardier who bought the shop for her. Encountering financial difficulties, Yvonne goes to Rigaud for aid and finds him murdered. Pierre confesses to the murder, thereby exonerating Clément, an innocent man, suspected of killing Rigaud, whose sweetheart Rigaud wronged. Pierre submits to arrest, confident that he will get off with a light sentence.
- Much to the disapproval of his snooty children, a wealthy widowed attorney takes up with a beautiful but "lower-class" woman.
- Felix Rudolff is a dressmaker tailor and later dresses like a policeman after seeing a parade He becomes a rookie policeman who handcuffs Dynamite Dan. He doesn't stay captured. Felix Rudolff has to deal with a live and kicking Dynamite Dan. Rufolff ends up with the collar and the girl.
- Georgie, a singer and music vendor on the streets of Paris, teams with Zizi, a pickpocket, and in the scurry before a police raid she meets Tony, a young American artist. Returning his wallet the next day. Georgie is persuaded to remain and model for him, and as a result they fall in love. When war is declared, Tony enlists and Georgie keeps his apartment for him. While nursing in a large hospital in Paris, Georgie becomes pals with three "musketeers" of the Paris underworld; when Tony fails to meet her on his leave, she finds him in the arms of Suzanne, a cafe waitress; with her friends she monopolizes their attention with her musical talent. Later, Suzanne lures her from the apartment and has her imprisoned. Tony joins the friends in their search for her; and after a battle with the villains, the lovers are reunited.

Nan is invited to put on a show for the benefit of Mrs. Benson's Christmas-Eve guests. While performing her boop-a-doop songs, Eustace Macy, the saxophone-tooting nephew of Mrs. Benson falls in love with Nan. And, then, the villain, the bank-robbing Doc Foster, makes his entrance. Can Dawes of the Royal Mounted be seen slushing in pursuit behind the gangster? Could Be.
- Jack Mason meets Mary Trumbull at a Coast Guard Academy graduation ball and falls in love with her. However, the girl's mother considers wealthy Rex Cutting a more appropriate choice for her daughter. During a yachting cruise arranged by Mrs. Trumbull, Mary refuses Rex's marriage proposal, as she suspects him of being a bootlegger. Meanwhile Betty, Mary's impish sister, drives Skippy Dugan to distraction in the galley, where he has installed an automatic kitchen that does most of his work. Jack smuggles himself aboard but is forcibly ejected at port, and Mrs. Trumbull discourages his attempt to elope with Mary. On a subsequent cruise, Jack hides in a lifeboat with two fellow Coast Guard members, and they witness the captain take on a cargo of illicit rum. Jack and his aides attempt to commandeer the vessel and a battle ensues. The yacht is wrecked on an island, where Jack proves his heroism and Rex is revealed as a fugitive bootlegger.
