- Fred Watson, ravaged by consumption, travels to the lonely country known as Dead Man's Gulch in hopes of regaining his health. Accompanying Fred is his family, comprised of Kate, his son Bobbie and dog Mickey. Coming upon two shacks, they meet Bill Dorgan, a rough bearded hermit who, after leering at Kate, invites the family to occupy the deserted cabin owned by Bill Mason, imprisoned for the murder of his partner. Meanwhile, his innocence established, Mason is pardoned from jail and returns to his cabin, bitter against the world. Gradually he is softened by Kate's charms and confides to her that he is searching for the gold that he and his partner had hidden years before, but is hampered by a missing section of the treasure map which disappeared the night of his partner's death. When Dorgan makes advances to Kate, Mason discovers that he possesses the other half of the map, having obtained it by killing Mason's partner. After a bitter struggle, Mason regains the map and proves Dorgan's guilt. Upon Fred's death, Mason discovers that Kate was the dead man's sister and not his wife, as had been assumed, and Mason wins both Kate's love and the gold.

- When Dad Petzel is swindled out of the Busy Bee mine, his partner, Duke Farley, ventures East to capture the crooks. Meanwhile, Summers, one of the grafters, learns that Farley's other mine, the Worm, has struck gold and determines to take control of it, too. Using Meta Cooper, an innocent girl to whom Farley is attracted, Summers frames the cowboy for the Mann Act, hoping to force him into selling the mine, but Farley thwarts Summer's plan when he marries Meta instead. Undaunted, Summers hires a sea captain to shanghai Farley. At sea, Farley discovers that Petzel and the rest of the cowboys on their ranch had come East looking for him and were shanghaied by the same captain. Together, they take over the ship and return to land in time to save Meta and arrest Summers.
- Mark Hanlon gambles away his fortune and the equity in his house, forcing his daughter, Molly, to marry casino owner Lee Kirk. As mistress of the gaming tables, Molly meets young Miles Rand, who falls in love with her and protects her from Lee. After Lee apparently dies in a saloon fire, Molly and Miles settle in New York City. Two years later, however, Lee confronts the couple and is fatally shot during a fight. Miles is arrested for the murder, and as he is about to be convicted, Kirk's former handyman admits to the crime.

- Molly Killbride, daughter of the inspector in the Royal Mounties, is in love with trooper Jimmy Hearn, but her father prefers that she marry Harry Morgan, a wealthy young civilian. Morgan, however, is allied with a gang of outlaws headed by Hanley, and when Morgan taunts Jimmy into a fist fight the gang causes him to be railroaded to prison for felonious assault. Meanwhile, Morgan gradually gains Molly's esteem, and she is turned against Jimmy. When Jimmy is released, he tracks Hanley to the mountains and overpowers him. Jimmy is reinstated by Jules, a half-witted Indian who convinces the inspector of his innocence, and he regains Molly's love.
- A local beggar is outside the tavern as a blind girl walks by, she drops a wallet that the beggar picks up, he builds up the courage to give it back, but he finds himself in trouble. When he finally returns it, she leaves, but some how through time and space she walks and bumps into him from behind, she realizes he's a homeless beggar, and gives him some money.
- Arthur buys a suit on the installment plan after spending his cash to buy a toy balloon from a pretty girl. He ties the balloon to the suit and they go sailing away and are found in a store that has been robbed and Arthur is accused. The girl comes to his rescue and he is freed, but the gang all kid him about the suit.
- Amos Kerran and his wife live a traditional, old-fashioned life on a Connecticut farm, while their son Arthur and daughter Maybelle are successes in New York society. The children want to invite their parents to the city at Christmastime but are ashamed of their unrefined appearance. Louise, Arthur's fashionable sweetheart, visits the older Kerrans, gains their confidence, and sends them to a finishing school; consequently, their New York debut is a big success.
- A candidate for governor, eager Gerald Harperpersuades his equally ambitious wife Carol to enlist the aid of her friend Diana Casper, whose influence with political boss Jarvis Flint could help him win the election. Carol agrees to speak to Diana on condition that Gerald temporarily assume her work in the city's tenements. There he meets the poor but beautiful Marna Royal, and the two form a friendship that soon grows into love. Diana learns of the affair, and although the romance is innocent, she threatens to ruin Gerald unless his best friend, Drew Garrett, marries her. When Drew refuses, Diana tells Carol of the affair, but later, in a struggle with Flint, Diana is killed. To avoid a scandal, Carol adopts young Marna, but soon afterwards, the disillusioned girl leaves the house with Drew. Narrowly prevented from killing himself, Gerald decides to begin a new life with Carol.

- John Oakhurst is a chivalrous gambler, and his friendship for Sandy Morton forms the motif of the story. Sandy Morton was given to excessive drink, which through the connivance of the duchess, the queen--of the gambling houses--resulted in the loss of his birthright. Though his father had maintained a search for him covering a number of years, he had never been able to locate him. Circumstances so shaped themselves that Oakhurst innocently, and believing Sandy dead, took the place of the long-lost son in his father's affection and household, and these circumstances reached a climax when Sandy's true identity was revealed at the psychological moment by the duchess herself. So upright has Oakhurst been in all his dealings with the eider Morton that as he turns to leave the room, the old man calls him back and announces that henceforth the name under which he will operate his banking business will be Alex, Morton and Sons and Oakhurst. Thus do the troubles of the two men cement their years of friendship into a life-long association.

- Released from prison on parole, the "Gas-Pipe Kid" returns to his home in the slums to find his mother dead and his father evicted. He is arrested for beating up the landlord but escapes with the help of Ida Hunt, his sweetheart. Years later he is a baseball star known as Bat Shugrue and is widely idolized by boys who read about his clean living. When Shugrue realizes his influence, he refuses to "throw" a game for blackmailers who threaten to reveal his past, and he goes to Judge Drury to tell the whole truth. The judge decides that Shugrue is more valuable free than in jail; the star is reunited with Ida.
- Struggling young painter Ruth Elliott has written her Eastern friend Mildred Colburn that she has gained fame in the West as an artist. When Mildred stops to visit on her way to Honolulu, Ruth hires Peter Neyland to pose as her chauffeur for five hours. Peter is actually a wealthy young man who accepts the offer as a lark. He chauffeurs the two women from the train station to a tea house. Mildred's chaperon Mrs. Peabody Jones, arrives with the news that the boat has been delayed and the two must stay with Ruth for a week. Without divulging his identity and aware of Ruth's predicament, Peter places his uncle's apartment at Ruth's disposal. When Mrs. Jones demands to meet celebrities, Peter's valet McQuade and his friend Ted Latham are put into service. The uncle and butler are later arrested as burglars. Meanwhile, Peter has fallen in love with Ruth. Ted has fallen in love with Mildred and double weddings follow.
- When 'Big' Dave Jacobs heads into the men's room at a symphony concert he is confronted with a most whimsical and interesting series of events, culminating in a brief dance to the tune of Strauss' Blue Danube. A beautiful young women at the symphony concert chooses to avoid the lengthy wait to use the women's restroom, and instead uses the almost empty men's room. Once inside she is headed for a confrontation of the strangest kind. Misty Swain and "Big Dave Jacobs star in the bathroom comedy.
- Fishing partners Paul Whalen and Jim Payne are rivals for the affections of Jennie Blake, a schoolteacher from the city who came to their small town of Rocky Point to teach school. After Jim is beaten in a fight by Paul, Jennie marries Paul and Jim leaves town. Five years later he returns to town as coastal inspector, and when he learns that Jennie and Paul are still married but Paul is out of work, Jim hires him as a lighthouse keeper but sends the couple to a remote, lonely, depressing lighthouse. Complications ensue.

Intimate glimpses of Charlie, the elephant, Chimpanzee Charlie, the most accomplished Simian actor in the world, Princess, the tigress, who escaped from captivity recently and raised such a disturbance throughout the confines of the city, Ethel, the trained lioness, and her new litter of cubs, the dog kennels, the hyenas, snakes, bears, trained pigs and giraffes. One of the most interesting scenes is feeding time, showing the manner in which the attendants alleviate the ferocious appetites of the wild beasts. Paul Bourgeois, the new trainer and director of the animal actors, is shown feeding the little pigs from a milk bottle.

- Wade Hildreth is sent to New York from London to receive a diamond necklace for Lady Gwendolyn from the jeweler Arabin. A gang of crooks led by Pete Fielding, known as "The Shadow," plans to keep Hildreth from going to Arabin's until they have robbed the store. Actress Morn Light, whom the Shadow loves, agrees to entice Hildreth to her apartment to be imprisoned. When she warns Hildreth because she wants to avenge her father's death, which was caused by the Shadow, the Shadow overhears and captures them both. With large numbers of shoppers in the store, the gang takes the necklace, other valuables, and the customers' possessions. Discredited Detective Tyron follows the gang's getaway boat and arrives with the Marines in time to stop the Shadow, against whom his gang is mutinying, from attacking Morn Light. The gang is captured, the Shadow jumps overboard, and Hildreth returns to England with the necklace and Morn Light, now his bride.

- A young crook who is being assiduously hunted finds that he needs money and tries to get his wife to steal for him. She has almost consented when the police break in and nab him. The prosecuting attorney is convinced of the wife's innocence and decides to take her and her baby to his mother's house for protection and to get her away from her former influences and surroundings. Arriving at her room, he finds the crook's pal trying to force his affections on her. He rescues her, and amid the surroundings of his own home she thrives and becomes very good to look upon, much to the attorney's discomfort. Meanwhile, the pal watches the house, sees the two together, and gets jealous and writes a note to the husband in prison. This note is smuggled to the prisoner and he makes his escape. Next door to the attorney is an inventor who is working on a repeating rifle which he fires against the metal disc in the laboratory in his house, or in a shed. The crook's wife is an interested spectator of these experiments. On the night of her husband's escape, he sneaks into the attorney's library and is about to stab him in the back when the inventor comes into his laboratory and, fumbling in the dark, sets off his gun. The target not being in place, the shot goes through the window into the attorney's library and kills the crook. Unknown to the young wife who is sleeping peacefully upstairs, the body is disposed of and with it the load on the attorney's conscience; he now feels free to love the woman.
- Overcoming his addiction to drink, John Fairmeadow leaves the Bowery for a western logging camp posing as a minister. His fistic ability and his gentle manner reform the town drinkers and put the saloon out of business. Meanwhile, John also protects pretty orphan Pattie Batch from the attentions of Jack Flack; Flack is killed by saloon keeper Pale Peter after the body of his wife, Clare, who was betrayed by Flack, is discovered in the river; and John is united to Pattie.
