- Nora Alsen, a famous doctor, is so busy with her work that she neglects her fiancé, Robert Harting. Robert seeks entertainment with Nelly Waldan, a waitress in a lunchroom. A year later: Nelly has fallen very ill and Nora is called in. In a crisis, Nelly constantly calls out Robert's name and the latter can no longer hear this and throws himself into her arms. Nora is left alone.
- In this first episode, Nayland Smith, entrusted by the British and Chinese authorities in Peking with the task of bringing Dr. Fu Manchu, a master criminal, to justice, comes to London and enlists the help of his friend, Dr. Petrie. Knowing Sir Crichton Davey to be in danger, they go to warn him, only to find that he has been mysteriously murdered. The same night an attempt is made on Smith by means of a poisonous insect, which is attracted by the scent in those envelopes. He kills it and realizes how Davey met his death.
- Samuel Relkin is married to the authoritarian Gertrude who has given him a daughter, the beautiful Frances. She has three suitors. Having to choose, in spite of her mother's disapproval, she opts for Hymie Moses, a scruffy and shy young man, the object of the street children's taunts. When a son is born, Frances, urged on by her mother, begins to complain that she always has to stay at home and look after him. Her recriminations lead Hymie to take care of the child himself while his wife goes off to a wedding. A few years later, with their second child, Gertrude urges her daughter to divorce until she relents. Samuel tells his son-in-law about a man who was so nagged by his wife that he went mad. So when Frances is about to leave with the children, Hymie suddenly starts making unconscious movements, even attempting to jump out of the window. Frances then decides to stay. Hymie confesses to Samuel that his was just a ruse and asks him to inform the doctor to continue the charade. But the doctor who arrives knows nothing about it and takes Hymie to the asylum. Escaping from his room, he runs into a big crazy man whom he calms down by giving him sugar. Having finished the sugar, he dominates him by behaving like a boss. From this experience, Hymie, when he is later released, confides his conclusions to his father-in-law: women, like madmen, love to be dominated by a boss. Frances now returns quietly and confides to her husband that she only wants him. Hymie vows not to give any more space to his mother-in-law's impromptu interventions.
- Back from America, Galaor, actor and adventurer with a big heart, finds Lise, his beloved cousin. The young girl is about to marry, against her will, the banker Moriang, who has won her father's favor by saving his factories from bankruptcy. But Moriang plots to frame Galaor, who has become a formidable rival, for theft.

Betka's sister Luisa loves Jarda, but after the death of her grandmother, she finds herself in a difficult situation and looks for a job with Agent Busch, who earns his living in the same way as Jarda. When Jarda learns after his release from prison that Busch wants to send Luisa to Bucharest, he thwarts her plans. He reconciles with his hated father-in-law and marries Luisa so they can start a new life together.
- As the S. S. Huron returns from her summer trip to Europe laden with many passengers, a mysterious lady in room 7 is never seen, and the whole boat starts to gossip about her. In the meantime, a puzzling telegram arrives for Peter Hale, the passenger in the room across hers, about a sign of the Double Cross and his father's will.
- Luisa, a wealthy widow accustomed to organizing social parties, has been having an unhappy passionate affair for a year with Fabrizio, one of her janitors, who humiliates and exploits her. In order to escape this situation, she moves to a small fishing village, where she seduces a young boatman who is already romantically linked to Mariella, the poor but beautiful soap-and-water girl who is called the "fishermen's angel" in the village.

The vaudeville director decides to follow his old friend's advice and confess his love to Sonja, but a stupid coincidence prevents him from doing so. On this very evening Sonja meets the passionate and seductive Alfredo de Cavalcante, who awakens in her all the feelings that had been hidden in her until then.

For his part, Jorge meets Anita, a maid at the Monreals' estate, with whom he falls in love from the very first moment.
