- Between the two World Wars, Manuel, a young man, is back in his Haitian village. What he discovers is appalling. The village is now separated into two enemy clans. To make matters worse, it is devastated by drought as all the springs have dried up. The sun scorches the earth. Manuel decides to go in search of water and winds up finding a spring.

As for Don Nicola, he becomes infatuated with Maria who, although she spurns his advances, becomes the victim of the villagers' talk, which causes her fiancé to run afoul of her. Maria decides to leave the village and finds a job in the nearest town.
- The tourist season is over. Peace and monotony have settled in at a large lakeside hotel. Jacqueline, her sister Helen and her husband Hans are still there, seemingly living in harmony. But Jacqueline has a secret desire to break the routine and get away from it all. One day, as she once again hits the road in her Buick, she runs into a young man, Mark. He takes up residence in the hotel until he recovers. Jacqueline senses that this man could be the one she needs to make a fresh start.
- Paris in 1943. Joseph, a Jewish man, looks out of his window and sees a Gestapo agent, accompanied by a Wehrmacht officer, getting out of a Traction-avant and heading towards his building. He understands: he is about to be arrested. He wakes up his 12-year-old daughter, Suzanne, and tells her that she must not say anything. At the time of his arrest, Joseph pretends that the girl is not his, that she is staying there with the landlady. As if in a dream, Suzanne confirms this version. Without a tear, she sees her father leave and never return. The pain will come only later: her father has saved her life.
- Capodistria, 1915. Captain Nazario Sauro, an officer in the Autrian Navy, is one of those patriots who militate for Italy to enter World War I. When he is about to be arrested by the Austrian authorities he chooses to desert. Once in Venice he enlists in the Italian Navy and becomes an officer in a submarine where his perfect knowledge of the coast of Istria proves particularly helpful. But when his submarine runs aground near the island of Munje, he is captured by the Austrians, sentenced to death for high treason and hanged in 1916.
- A ten-minute film devoted to a spoon. It may appear surprising but the fact is this is not any spoon. It is actually a shadow spoon ancient Egyptians used for their dead, which not content to protect them from flies, was also supposed to keep their eyes open during their voyage to the other world. Carlos Vilardebo films it (and a few others of the type) with all the more fascination as it has the shape of a beautiful naked swimmer. In the end, the ten minutes spent looking at spoons seem - too short.
- Married to a provincial magistrate, Caroline would lead a rather quiet life if she did not have a lifelong passion: carriage driving competitions. A recognized champion, she gives herself body and soul to this sport, which is her whole life. However, after a disappointing season, Caroline is abandoned by her sponsor.

This is only a minor problem since they are immediately hired as mechanics and cooks, to everyone's satisfaction. To crown it all, there is Graziella, the niece of the king of Naphtha, whose endearing charms do not leave Roger insensitive. And the belle has a lady friend by the name of Ingrid, who happens to be as rich as she is, and who kindles Jeannot's flame. But things are not as simple as they appear.

- Edith Stein (1891-1942) had been born Jewish in Breslau (now Wroclaw in Poland). She studied philosophy in her native town before joining Göttingen University. In Freiburg, she worked with Professor Edmund Husserl, the philosopher who established the school of phenomenology. At the age of thirty, she converted to Catholicism and later entered the Carmel of Echt, in the Netherlands. In 1942, she was arrested there and sent to the Auschwitz concentration camp where she was gassed. Edith Stein, who had become Sister Theresa of the Cross, was canonized in 1998.
