- An escaped convict is on the loose, and the police are searching all the doss-houses in the hopes of finding him there. A young journalist is sent by his editor to assist in the search with the aim of reporting on any interesting stories he may find among those seeking shelter that night in the local doss-house, and is eager to help with the arrest. Among the characters they encounter are a man who claims to have got away with murder, and an alcoholic former concert pianist.
- In the East London tenements lives one Alexandra Vickers, better known as "Viccy." She is rough-tongued, quick-tempered, and generous as far as her slender means allow. Her parents died when the girl was very young and left her to shift for herself. Later she takes up her abode with Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Smith and their nephew, Albert Grummett. In the month of August the family decides to go to the hop fields and earn their living picking the sticky vegetable from which is made the national beverage, beer. About this time in America a wealthy contractor dies and leaves his immense fortune to Victoria Alexandra Vickers, the only daughter of his brother. A search is made for the girl and she is finally located in the hop fields. She is placed under the care of a Mrs. Carrington, to become polished. After "Viccy" leaves, Grummett, with five hundred pounds given him by the girl, sets himself up in business and is soon prosperous. Mrs. Carrington's son asks "Viccy" to marry him, as he needs money to pay his debts, and the girl accepts him. She later sees Grummett, however, and after discovering that Carrington wants only her money she goes back to Grummett, and East returns to East.
- It is pouring with rain at one minute to midnight on Friday the thirteenth, and the driver of a London bus is peering through his blurred windshield as his vehicle sails down an empty road. Suddenly, lightning strikes, and a vast crane above topples into the path of the oncoming bus. Then Big Ben begins to wind backwards. Time recedes, and we discover the lives of all of the passengers and the events that brought them to that late-night bus journey, from the con man with a hundred pound cheque to the businessman's distraught and elderly wife. Time flows on, inevitably, to the crash, and past it, as some live and some die.

- Dr Schweitzer, a former internationally-famous organist and theologian, is working in a small hospital in French colonial Africa. He founded the institute at his own expense, leaving his wife and child behind in Europe. The outbreak of the First World War sparks unrest amongst the natives. It also brings the local French officials to the hospital. They intern him as an enemy alien due to his German birth, despite the fact that this will mean the closure of the only medical facility anywhere in the area.
- Ma and Pa Slocum sell up their thriving packed-lunch business (based on Ma's home cooking, Pa's packaging design, and pretty daughter Helen's salesmanship), and move 'uptown' to live the life of the idle rich on the proceeds. But Ma starts worrying about her figure, the neighbour's nephew has his roving eye on Helen, and her construction-worker fiancé feels that the family are getting too 'swell' for his touch; events culminate in a family quarrel that sends the men out to seek solace at a raunchy club, while the women resort to the Turkish Baths. - A con-woman has a nice business fleecing gullible tourists who want a genuine 'underworld' experience, but the tables are turned when one of her victims turns out to be less innocent than he looks. Dodging the city detective who knows her by sight and wants her to "go straight", she next sets her sights on a valuable diamond pendant; but when her elegant nemesis turns up at the scene of the would-be crime, a race begins to see who can carry out the con first.

- The humorous adventures of the notorious Scottish highwayman and thief Davey Haggart during the 1820s in Britain.
- Polly, the Smith's prize cook, decides to marry Johnny. The Smiths starts out with her Johnny's house where the wedding is to take place. Vernon, a traffic cop who has been jilted by Polly, gives Jimmy Smith a ticket for some offense every few blocks. Polly has a bottle of eggnog with her and proceeds to get considerably intoxicated, They lose their way and after many narrow escapes, reach Johnny's house. All of the guests have left and Johnny tells Polly the wedding is off. The Smiths start home, thankful that they still have their good cook, but a sudden bump precipitates her into the arms of Vernon, the cop, who is following them, and there She decides to stay.
- The handyman is finishing getting the Island Inn Café ready for opening night: it's a speakeasy, and the owner, Louie the Wolf, has been warned by the local mob kingpin, Slugger McGraw, not to open. When Slugger's thugs arrive at the Island Inn, they think the handyman is Louie. Louie promotes this case of mistaken identity, and our poor innocent faces a series of dangerous situations. When he finally learns that the thugs (and Louie) are up to no good, he must think fast to save his neck.

- While reading the paper, John Weller is amazed at the number of "ads" setting forth the virtues of wigs, false teeth, form developers and other female beautifiers, turns to his wife and declares in disgust, "This magazine must have a big circulation among old ladies who want to look like Cinderellas." She merely laughs, and soon afterwards, Weller falls asleep in his chair. He dreams that he finds an old man making love to his wife, angrily confronts the old fellow and is told, "Your wife was my sweetheart sixty years ago." John is stunned by the news, asks his wife if it is true and she admits she is "eighty-five years old." Deciding she must be one of those women who preserve their youthful appearance by artifice, he commands her to retire behind a screen and hand out all that is false about her. After receiving a wig, various "form plumpers," a full set of false teeth and pair of wooden legs, John angrily kicks over the screen and to his horror finds nothing left but a little heap of clothes. Sobbing the poor fellow calls up the undertaker who brings a tiny coffin and tenderly places the remains in it. Weller mournfully tells the undertaker, "She was false to me but I love her just the same." The gentleman in black nods gravely and goes out with the coffin. John wakes up weeping and finds his wife staring at him in astonishment. He is still bewildered and to make sure she is real makes her open her mouth, pulls her hair and looks into her eyes, then with a sigh of relief takes her in his arms and kisses her, convinced she is all there.

- When the wealthy society woman has her beautiful pearls stolen she hurries to the newspaper office to have a notice of reward printed immediately. The editor offers to make the first reporter who brings in the details of the robbery and recovers the pearls, an editor, Baby Peggy, as the boss' stenographer, hears this and decides to be the one. She procures some male attire and a false mustache. Leaving the office, she sees two of the regulars just going off in a flivver. She jumps in the rear seat, unnoticed and by punching first one and then the other leads them to believe that the other is getting too fresh. They have words and finally get out to settle the matter, fistically. Our heroine seizes the opportunity and drives away in the car while the men are fighting. She arrives at the home of the society woman and questions the butler. His actions convince her that she is on the right track and after being thrown out several times she reenters in a new phonograph cabinet being delivered. While in the cabinet she gets the goods on the butler and rushes with her story and the pearls to the office where she is made editor and has them all jumping at her command.
