- Mike arrives home late and explains that he drove up to Miller's Ridge lookout because he feels close to Julie there. Matt irritates Mike who makes another crack about Rico killing Julie. Maggie offers to help Matt search for the fob. After they have dinner together, Steve allows a flirtatious Nurse Ryker to convince him to stay for a nightcap. Following a bit of innuendo regarding Steve's reputation with the women on staff at Hope Memorial, Cathy gives him a shoulder massage and suddenly kisses him. Steve disappoints Cathy by avoiding her seduction, but she smiles cunningly when she realizes that he left his coat behind. Greta cries out for Julie in her sleep. Awakening, she goes to the closet and retrieves the rabbit's foot fob. Mike discovers an uncommunicative Greta sitting on the floor. While examining Greta, Maggie sees Rico's rabbit's foot clasped in Greta's hand.
- Frank and Nick Szabo meet to discuss the situation with the $6500. Nell reassures Ed that she no longer wants to be married to Seneca. Frank has to cover when Mary wonders why he's talking with Nick. Seneca talks with Marshall and fishes for more details of Ed and Nell's growing relationship. Mary questions the Riverside staff about the missing money. Former New York Mets pitcher Nolan Ryan is brought into Riverside with an injury.
- Mary prevents Jack from seeing Nolan Ryan in the hospital while Pat spirits him away for an x-ray. Frank and Jill discuss the current state of their affair and the problem with Delia. Delia returns to see Frank, who informs her that he'll continue to keep her secret if she agrees to conceal his affair with Jill.
- After being discharged from Riverside, Nolan Ryan drops by Ryan's to thank Mary and incurs Jack's jealousy when he kisses her. Johnny tells Maeve his fears that Mary's too trusting of Jack. Delia confesses her sins to Father McShane and vows to try and do the right thing henceforth. Later, she shares with Maeve her desire to start over as a wife and mother.
- Pat and his buddy Bucky try to get to know fellow doctor Faith better. Pat tells an old Irish tale. Mary and Jack discuss politics. Maeve comforts a distraught Delia who has wandered into the bar.
- Tom Baxter pays a visit to Pat Matthews, and she blithely dismisses it to her parents. Jim decides to check on his sister-in-law Liz, whose husband Will, Jim's brother, just recently passed away. Mary confides in Grandma Matthews that she and Jim don't trust Tom Baxter with Pat because of his reputation. Jim advises a grief stricken Liz to remember that she has a son and daughter to think about. Susan avoids Liz's overtures and admits that they have never been close. After speaking with Susan, Liz turns her attention to son Bill, who declares "man of the house."
- Pat expresses his annoyance with Frank's treatment of Delia. Delia offers to go campaigning with Frank, as if nothing were wrong. Faith returns to work at Riverside and wonders how involved Jill is becoming with Seneca. Frank doesn't satisfactorily answer Delia who wants to know if things are fine between them. Maeve discusses the anonymous note with Frank, and he continues to question the inconsistency in Delia's stories. Delia secretly phones Roger. Faith shares with Patrick her new feeling of strength and her interest in changing her specialty from neurology to pediatrics. Roger lies to Delia that an emergency at Riverside prevented him from phoning and pretending to be Sheila. Maeve urges Frank to forget about the note and patch up his marriage before it's too late. Frank follows Maeve's advice but when he goes to Delia he accidentally overhears her on the phone telling Roger not to call her because she'll call him when it's safe.
- Johnny is happy to see Frank and Delia getting along very well after a day of campaigning together, but in private, Frank tells him about Delia's telephone call. Jill and Roger testify at Seneca's hearing, but Jill's arguments don't appear to outweigh Roger's. Frank confides in Johnny that he believes Delia is involved with Roger, and they concoct a scheme to bring Roger and Delia together in order to observe their interaction. Bob laments to Maeve all the trips he could have taken with Mary had she seen him as more than a friend. Jill stops by Ryan's and tells Maeve, Bob, and Delia about Roger's damaging testimony at the medical board hearing. Delia speculates to Maeve that Jill is sweet on Seneca. Johnny and Frank spy on Roger and Delia at the bar, then Frank announces in front of everyone that he has to leave on a trip to Albany tomorrow and can't take Dee with him, which immediately catches Roger's interest.
- Roger takes Frank's bait and coerces Delia into agreeing to meet him while Frank is in Albany. Johnny stuns Maeve with Frank's suspicion about Delia and Roger. Mary reassures Jack that he has a home now. Mary receives a telegram from Channel R. Johnny convinces Maeve that Frank could be right about Delia and Roger, but Maeve continues to feel sorry for Delia. Jack jumps to conclusions over Mary's telegram. Later, Maeve realizes Frank may be right when Delia uses a pretext and asks her to babysit for Little John while she goes out.
- Alone with Delia in his apartment, Roger suddenly realizes that he's become like Frank when Delia confesses that she no longer feels comfortable with him but rather feels like he's using her just as Frank does. Bucky expresses his concern to Jill that if the medical board revokes Seneca's medical license, he'll never be satisfied just doing research. Afterward, Jill receives grim news. A contrite Roger apologizes for hurting Dee and swears that he loves her, won't reveal their affair to anyone, and will back up Delia's lies to the Ryan family. Moved by Roger's change of heart, Dee falls into Roger's arms as he begs her to make love with him.one last time. Jill picks up Seneca from prison and delivers the bad news that his license has been suspended indefinitely. Seneca agrees to Jill's idea that they spend the weekend at the Coleridge beach house so that Seneca can have quiet time to contemplate his future. Frank enters Roger's apartment through the open terrace doors and finds Delia in Roger's arms.
- After catching Delia and Roger together, Frank hurls her to the floor and warns her not to follow him home since she no longer lives there. Despite Roger's insistence that everything has worked out for the best, Delia wails that she's going back to Ryan's to save her marriage, and she never wants to see him ever again. Roger reminds her that he'll be waiting for her when she's ready to come back to him. Seneca and Jill experience car trouble on the road to her beach house. Following the scene with Delia, Frank thinks of Jill, while Jill, alone in the stranded car, thinks of Frank. Maeve remarks to Pat that she hopes Jill has an interest in Seneca. Delia arrives back home and seeking help from Maeve and Patrick, she tells them that Roger forced himself on her then blackmailed her into going to bed with him. Maeve goes for Johnny, while Delia begs a stunned Pat to please believe her and be her friend.
- Delia cries to Pat that if he had married her before Frank, no one of this would have happened. Maeve breaks the news to Johnny about Frank finding Delia with Roger. Johnny demands that Delia explain what happened in detail. While waiting for a tow truck, Seneca gets Jill to tell him all about how she and Frank became lovers. Jill admits to Seneca that she although she still loves Frank and always will, she's no longer in love with him. Johnny disbelieves Delia's claims and suggests she give Father McShane permission to verify her, but Pat saves her by interrupting Johnny with a reminder that Dee isn't solely responsible; Frank is still partly responsible, too. Johnny's bullying Delia escalates Pat's defense of her. Frank returns home and bitterly tells Delia to leave.
- Frank tells Delia to pack her bags and go back to Roger. Delia crumbles when she learns that everyone in the family knew Frank set her up to catch her with Roger. Maeve orders Frank to talk to Delia since the mess they're in stands to hurt Little John more than anyone else. Delia throws Frank's affair with Jill in his face during their heated discussion, and he admits he wished he never married her. An upset Dee screams that she'll never leave and runs to her bedroom. Pat remembers kissing Delia when they were teenagers. Mary plans a big New Orleans dinner party when she and Jack get back to New York. Pat begs Frank to not be too hasty in throwing Delia out. When Delia walks in with a crying Little John, a furious Frank realizes she's using him as a weapon and storms out after insisting their marriage is over.
- Bob brings Maeve and Johnny word on Frank's whereabouts. Maeve forces Delia to listen to some painful home truths. Delia realizes she has no place to turn and vows to make everyone sorry. Bob angrily confronts Roger about his affair with Delia. A dream about Frank disturbs Mary. Frank continues to phone Jill, unaware that she's gone to the Coleridge beach house with Seneca. Delia devises a plan to make everyone feel bad about the way they've treated her. Maeve discovers that Delia and Little John are missing.
- Johnny gives Frank the news that Delia and Little John are gone. Seneca and Jill arrive at the beach house. Frank goes to Roger's where he thinks Delia is staying with Little John. Bothered by her dream, Mary phones home, and after hearing about the situation, she and Jack disagree about cutting their honeymoon short and returning to New York. Frank tells Bob that in Delia's current state, she's likely to do anything.
- After urging Frank to see Father McShane, Maeve informs that Jill has gone to the beach with Seneca, and he should accept the possibility of a romance between them. Mary encourages a sullen Jack to express his anger over them cutting their honeymoon short due to the crisis with Dee. Through a montage of photographs and song, Seneca and Jill frolic on the beach. Frank receives a phone call from Delia, who sounds hysterical.
- Delia tells Frank that she won't come home because he'll take Little John away from her and out her out in the street. Pat is disturbed when Frank admits Dee mentioned being better off dead. Pat and Maeve quarrel about his anger at Frank's treatment of Delia. Jill and Seneca get cozy at the beach house. Delia promises Little John that they'll go home in just a couple of hours. Frank searches hotels in vain to find Delia. Jill falls asleep in Seneca's arms. Delia phones the Ryans again, but when Maeve's first concern is Little John, Dee becomes enraged, accusing Maeve of only caring about her grandson. Before hanging up, Delia screams that she's not bluffing, and Maeve can find another mother for Little John.
- Frank seeks help from Father McShane and comes to the conclusion that Delia didn't begin an affair with Roger against her will. Patrick urges Frank to get home as soon as possible since Delia's suicide threat could be real. Mary arrives at Maeve and Johnny's where she complains about Jack not understanding her need to be with the family. Seneca allows Jill to make the decisions for the evening. Delia phones home and talks with Frank, but when he refuses to state firmly that he'll give her a second chance, Delia coldly gives him the name of the hotel and her room number. She says he can find Little John there, but she'll be gone. She hangs up, opens the hotel window, and climbs out on the ledge, several stories above a busy street.
- Johnny, Frank, and Bob converge on Delia's hotel room. Frank spots Delia out the window on the tenth story ledge, but she says it's too late and tells him to go. Bob and Frank try to coax Delia in from the ledge, though she won't budge. Seneca and Jill discuss being alone and loneliness. Still on the ledge, Delia explains to Frank that if he won't forgive her and let her come home, she has no choice but to die. Frank gives in and says he'll forgive her, but Delia feels dizzy and says that she's going to fall. As Jill turns out the lights and prepares to turn in for the night, Seneca takes her in his arms and kisses her passionately. The police scramble to put up safety nets below Delia. Frank coaxes her into scooting a few inches closer to him, but she suddenly panics and cries out for help.
- Frank's continued absence at Ryan's Bar causes speculation. Newspaper reporter Jack Fenelli's insinuations about Frank's involvement with local thug Nick Szabo annoy Mary. Jack meets Bob Reid, Frank's campaign manager and brother-in-law. Bob attempts to calm his sister Delia, who is still apparently still shaken by the alleged near-accident in the street. After Bucky expresses an interest in sweet Faith, Patrick insists that Bucky won't get anywhere with her romantically. Faith's brother Roger, a neurosurgeon at Riverside, takes the back stairs and discovers Frank lying at the bottom of the stairwell.
- A determined Mary reassures a dubious Jack that Frank is a honest politician and only wants the best for his district. Bucky receives a visit from his aunt, Dr. Nell Beaulac, in New York without her husband Dr. Seneca Beaulac. Nell surprises Bucky with her intent to stay in New York and work at Riverside. Pat's colleague Dr. Clem Moultrie breaks the news to him that Frank has been seriously injured in a fall. In the emergency room, Roger and Pat are astonished when the nurse pulls $6500 from Frank's coat pocket.
- Frank undergoes surgery with Ed and Roger operating. Bucky offers a shoulder to cry on for an upset Faith who fears for Frank's life. Jack arrives to keep Mary company, and she regales him with stories from her childhood. Bob and Mary discuss the money that Frank was carrying when he had the accident and speculate what might have happened to it.
- Maeve and Ryan patriarch Johnny Ryan learn about Frank's accident from Faith. Nell confides in Bucky that she and Seneca are having marital problems because he cares more about his career than her. Learning about the gravity of Frank's injuries, Maeve and Johnny call for their priest Father McShane. While strolling through the city and talking about Frank with Mary, Jack falls into the Hudson River. The Ryan family are desperate to find Mary as Frank's condition appears hopeless.
- Jack takes Mary with him to his apartment on Weehawken Street to change his wet clothes and attempts to get her into his bed. Delia approaches the verge of hysteria when Pat informs her of Frank's accident. Bucky makes Nell promise to keep their familial relationship a secret since he doesn't want anyone to know he's the heir to a family fortune. Nell receives a phone call from Seneca, but she rejects him. Mary and Jack race to Riverside Hospital after hearing about Frank.
- Frank is taken away for more tests, and Pat advises the family that Frank is paralyzed. Faith won't accept Bucky's dinner date but agrees to have coffee, and they discuss how much the Coleridge and Reid families admire Frank and the Ryans. Faith and Roger's father Dr. Ed Coleridge informs everyone that Frank doesn't have brain damage, but there's a spinal injury, requiring surgery, which he'll perform with son Roger assisting. Jack is impressed by Mary and her family's devotion and resilience in the face of adversity. Bob senses something is off about Frank's "accident" and tells Mary about the money found in Frank's possession. Delia becomes more unhinged and wants to go home to Little John, her and Frank's young son.
- Attorney Jill Coleridge, sister to Faith and Roger, hears about Frank's hospitalization. Mary finds Jack's presence comforting, and he promises to see her again. Jill goes to the hospital and is devastated to find him in critical condition. She recalls their great love for one another. Meanwhile, a nervous Delia wonders if Frank might ever regain consciousness and tell what happened to him.
- Bob learns from Nurse Gonzales that Frank saw Nick Szabo shortly before he falling down the hospital stairs. After Chief of Staff Ed Coleridge lets Nell down by arguing that he can't afford to hire her, she goes over his head and uses her family's wealth to secure a job at Riverside. While Bob tries to find out what happened to the missing $6500 found on Frank's person, Nick Szabo lets Roger know he has nothing to fear now that Roger's gambling debts are paid.
- Mary becomes enraged after Pat encourages her to put Frank's city councilman campaign on hold until Frank's condition improves, if ever. Ed and Nell clash when hospital administrator Marshall Westheimer forces him to hire her. A suspicious Bob starts asking Nick Szabo questions in an effort to find out why Frank fell down the stairs.
- Mary arranges an interview for Frank with Sam Crowell of local closed circuit television Channel R. Sister Mary Joel encourages Jack to not run away from Mary's love. Frank isn't sure that Father McShane's simple advice can help him through his resentment of Delia. Sister Mary Joel receives a gift from Mary and tells Jack he must give something to Mary. Mary proves a hit with Sam Crowell.
- Frank and Jillian realize they must end their relationship after Delia helps out Frank with the political bosses.
- Dr. Seneca Beaulac arrives in New York to take Nell back home with him, but she explains why she won't go back. Ed won't answer when Johnny wants to know if Frank will make a full recovery. Faith confides in Bucky why she chose to follow in the medical footsteps of her father and brother. Nell suggests that Seneca leave and forget about her. While Ed and Faith worry about Frank, he tries to open his eyes.
- Bucky seeks more advice from Pat about romancing Faith. Seneca finds Nell getting a tour of Riverside with Roger. He does his best to affect a reconciliation, but she reiterates her desire to be apart from him. Later, Ed sees Nell crying after sending Seneca away.
- Mary and Delia clash over Delia's strange attitude toward Frank and the accident. Nurse Gonzales confirms for Jack that $6500 was found on Frank but later turned up missing. Buck gives Faith a bouquet of flowers. Bob attempts to help an upset Delia. Jack gets rid of another reporter who turns up looking for a story on Frank.
- Delia whines to Maeve about Mary's brusque behavior, and Maeve asks Mary to be more sensitive to Delia. Faith sets Bucky straight about their relationship which considers platonic. Delia gloats over Mary's apology. Jill reminisces about her love affair with Frank. While Jill sits by his bedside, Frank begins to speak Delia's name.
- Jill calls for medical staff when Frank begins to speak Delia's name, but later, as Ed attends to him, Frank loses consciousness again. Bucky and Nell commiserate over their complicated love lives. After reviewing Frank's plates, Nell speculates to Ed that Frank's recovery is doubtful. While Mary visits with him, Franks starts to mumble again and says the word "push."
- After trying to indicate to Mary that he was pushed, Frank loses consciousness. Ed comes in at the end of an upsetting phone call between Nell and Seneca and asks her out, but she declines. Delia becomes notably agitated when Mary informs the family that Frank has moments of consciousness in which he says Delia's name.
- Delia exploits her status as Frank's wife to upset Jill. Jack questions Nick Szabo about the exact nature of his business with Frank. Faith gives Bucky a painting of a ship and accepts his dinner date. Bob threatens Jack after hearing him fishing for information about Frank from Nick. Delia confides in Pat that Bob is acting as if he thinks there's more to Frank's fall than a simple accident.
- Nell informs Ed that Frank's latest X-rays might suggest the development pneumonia. Faith tries to slow down Bucky who forgets that he and Faith are just palling around as platonic friends. Pat remembers an incident when Frank acted as a supportive big brother. Nell clashes with Clem. Faith questions why she isn't interested in Bucky physically.
- Mary confides in Jack about Frank's recent murmurings while in a semi-conscious state, and later, Bob calls her on the carpet for trusting a reporter of dubious ethics. Ed has a serious talk with Nell after he receives complaints from Clem and Nurse Gonzales about Nell's disruptive behavior. Nell receives Frank's latest X-rays and has bad news to deliver.
- A nervous Delia questions Mary about what Frank has said, but her fears dissipate when Mary claims that Frank is just rambling and not making sense. Mary and Pat agree to keep Frank's random murmurings a secret from everyone else. Maeve and Johnny begin to feel more hopeful for Frank's recovery, unaware that Nell's X-rays show that he has developed pneumonia in both lungs. Ed tells Faith and Pat about the change in Frank's condition, and doubts Frank can survive. Pat goes to Ryan's to break the bad news about Frank to the family.

- Maeve remembers happier times with her son Frank. Roger and Nell have a meal at Ryan's, and she meets Johnny. Nell admits to Roger that Seneca has gone back to their home, prompting Roger to try to spend the night with her, but she rejects him. Seneca calls from Minnesota in another attempt to reconcile, but Nell won't budge .
- Ed performs a tracheotomy on Frank as his airway is becoming more restricted. Bob despairs over not being able to uncover any more information about what caused Frank's fall. While visiting an unconscious Frank with Mary, Bob becomes emotional and begs Frank to wake up and tell them who hurt him. Bucky and Faith spend their day off together, and Faith starts to get drunk from Aquavit.
- Jack turns his investigation of Frank toward Jill, who refuses to say anything which only stokes his suspicions. Later, Jill recalls more of her affair with Frank. Faith passes out while drinking with Bucky, who still wants a romantic relationship with her. Roger and Jill visit Frank, and while supporting his sister, Roger's comments make Jill suspicious that he might know something about Frank's accident.
- Delia attempts to find out from Pat what Bob has uncovered in his investigation of Frank's fall. Mary finds out more about Jack.An upset Faith awakens after drinking too much then accuses Bucky of trying to take advantage of her. Mary has a sixth sense that Frank desperately needs her and insists they go to the hospital immediately. Meanwhile, Pat stops by Frank's room to check on him and finds him gasping for air.
- Roger promises Jill that he won't tell anyone that she and Frank are lovers. Jack realizes the strength of Mary's connection with her family when they arrive and find Pat upset over Frank who is experiencing trouble breathing. Faith loses her cool after Roger teases her about spending the day alone with Bucky in his boat.
- Seneca phones again, and he and Nell predictably end up quarreling. Pat catches Faith continuing to berate Bucky. He sticks up for his friend, promoting Faith to have a change of heart and offer to cook a meal for Bucky. Clem has another run-in with after he witnesses her clashing with Nick Szabo.
- Jack's probing questions about Frank rattle Delia. Roger and Mary run into each other at Riverside and catch up. Maeve comforts Delia who claims to feel bad about not having more time with Frank. Jack's arrival annoys Roger who cautions Jill that Jack will use anything she tells him, but Mary insists he's trustworthy.
- After Johnny presses her about Frank's prognosis, Nell tells him she doesn't think he'll live. Bob and Nick discuss his connection to the Ryan family. Ed overhears Nell's talk with Johnny and praises her. Seneca phones hospital administrator Marshall Westheimer to talk about Nell. Ed offers Nell an apology for initially misjudging her. Maeve and Johnny have a serious conversation about Frank, and she admits that she knows her son is dying.
- Delia accepts Bob's news of Frank's grim prospects with a curious mixture of relief and regret. Roger tips off Jill to Frank's worsening condition. Jack offers Mary support as she grapples with her brother's impending death. The Ryan family gathers in Frank's hospital room, and as his fading life flashes before his eyes, he hears a distraught Mary desperately calling for him.
