- There are not many World War II veterans like 95 year-old Manhattanite Ed Weisberger. With bittersweet humor he describes flying gliders into battle ("nobody bothered to tell us they were suicide missions"), the invasion of Nazi-occupied Holland ("there wasn't much to do there except dodge bullets"), and the invasion of Germany ("it was great until the Germans showed up"). A keen observer with an astonishing memory, Ed's poignant, acerbic stories describe a remarkable time in world history.
- In their separate apartments, a man and a woman prepare anxiously for an evening out. They agonize over hair and clothing. Finally they are ready, leave their apartments, and flush with anticipation they approach one another on the street. Then the surprise: they pass by one another with only a backward glance.
- Photographer Thelma Pepper and painter Jeff Nachtigall believe that creativity is essential for being fully alive. A Year At Sherbrooke follows these two artists as they work with the residents of Sherbrooke Community Centre, a Canadian facility that is gaining international recognition for its innovations in long-term care. The film does not shy away from the challenges faced by the residents, but it offers a powerful message on the healing power of creativity. Art, Thelma and Jeff show, can give hope to the hopeless. A Year At Sherbrooke is an experience not easily forgotten.
