- A low-keyed film about a mother's relationship with her growing son. The middle-class Mrs. Pan lives in Taipei, is married to a mainlander, and has two children, her son Han-sheng and a younger daughter Han-lin. She is always worrying about Han-sheng getting good grades, passing his university entrance exams, getting the right job, his love life, and his rebellion against his home and school.
- Trieu is an orphan who lives with her mother-in-law and her brother-in-law Thien. They work the family land, and also weave towels. Trieu's husband Dai returns to the village, after a four year absence, to ask Trieu for a divorce, because he has started a business in Hanoi with his girlfriend. Trieu refuses, but Dai leaves her ten pieces of gold and the divorce papers to sign. After a row with Toan, the local towel buyer, Trieu manages to sell the cloth to the distributors herself, and uses the gold to set up a weavers co-op. Trieu and Thien grow closer together, but village custom would disapprove of any relationship between the siblings-in-law, even if Trieu were divorced.
- The trustees of Midwestern University have forced three teachers out of their jobs for being suspected communists. Trustee Ed Keller has also threatened mild mannered English Professor Tommy Turner, because he plans to read a controversial piece of prose in class. Tommy is upset that his wife Ellen also suggested he not read the passage. Meanwhile, Ellen's old boyfriend, the football player Joe Ferguson, comes to visit for the homecoming weekend. He takes Ellen out dancing after the football rally, causing Tommy to worry that he will lose her to Joe.
- A government minister from Hanoi has a car accident on the way to a wedding in a remote village. The county hospital does not have the authority to operate on a minister. The county commissioner would like the operation done in the county for the prestige it would bring, but will not authorize it without the approval of the whole county committee. The hospital director has filled his quota, so does not want to take the risk of an operation. Since a telephone call to Hanoi has to be booked two days in advance, the minister's wife cannot be contacted, nor can a helicopter be arranged to move the minister to Hanoi.
- A Vietnamese General retires and has difficulty adjusting to civilian life with his extended family. His wife is senile and thinks that the war is still on. His conniving bossy daughter-in-law, Thuy, runs the house, entertains her poet lover, and makes extra money breeding dogs feed on ground-up placentas she steals from the clinic where she works. His thieving lower class half-brother tries to raise money for his pregnant daughter's wedding. The servants, saved from the streets, are sent back to their village against their will, because the General thought that the revolution he fought for was supposed to herald a classless society.
- Sir Christopher Meyer, British ambassador to Washington from 1997 to 2003, tells the story of the US post-war loan to Britain, that was finally paid off in 2006. In 1945, Britain was practically bankrupt and the economist John Maynard Keynes hoped that America would give Britain a grant to recover from the war, so he was sent to Washington to try to convince the Yanks.
- Leila is a university student, born and raised in Canada. However her parents still hold on to their traditional Palestinian customs, and her father will not allow her to go out after 5 p.m. This culture clash comes to a head when Leila goes to a dance audition and is chosen to be in the performance.
- A pretty pickpocket is travelling on an express train from Osaka to her home village. She is an orphan, but wants to show off her wealth to the villagers who accused her father of being a spy. Detective Kita, who is on holiday, recognizes her and suggests to a pulp writer that he use her as a model for a story. While in a tunnel, she picks the wrong wallet from the man beside her, and subsequently loses her savings to an older woman pickpocket. At an inn, the writer replaces her money. The writer knows that the detective is falling in love with her, and the two follow her to her village. They find that the village is now part of a US air base and bombing range.
- Film based on variety shows of the 20s 'Arco Iris', 'La feria de las hermosas', and 'Las maravillosas', all of them created by Eulogio Velasco.
- The filmmaker searches for his brother Max, who left his children without explanation. The brothers grew up in the Congo with their white father and Congolese mother. He visits their mother, who still lives in Kinshasa, and their father in Lisbon, as well as the extended family in France and Belgium. His search even takes him to Cambodia where Max was spotted. This fiction film is based on, and uses, the filmmaker's own family.
- The isolated village of Tohoku is surrounded by high mountains, and has a tradition that only the eldest sons may marry and inherit. The filthy, unshaven younger sons, called yakkos, work the land and never have sex. To redress an ancestor's crime, the widow Oei has to take each yakko for a night. However she refuses to take Risuke, who has particularly vile breath. So Risuke's eldest brother Tasuke tells his wife Asa to take Risuke for a night, while an old blabbermouth suggests another alternative to Risuke.
- Brian Jessel, a civil servant in the Cabinet Office, is asked to investigate the mysterious death of the civil servant Stephen Summerchild twenty years earlier. Summerchild was working on a Cabinet project, under the Oxford philosophy don Elizabeth Serafin, to find the "quality of life" in Britain. Jessel finds a box of audio tapes from the project containing all the discussions up to the time Summerchild fell off the Admiralty Building.
- Max is a middle-aged unemployed actor who drives a cab in the daytime, and attempts stand-up comedy at night. His act falls flat until he discovers his talent for retelling the lives of his friends. These friends are all actors: Larry is in a TV soap, Anna is a confident older stage actress, Maggie is his ex-wife who never seems to get past an audition, and Celia is his new younger girlfriend.
- Amy Donaldson, a successful fashion editor of City Magazine, is married to Carl, an accountant, and they have one young son, Brian. Amy is pregnant and she finds that she tests positive for HIV. The films traces the effect of this on her, her family, and her best friend Suzanne.
- Mrs. Friendly, the grocer's wife, tries to seduce Tim Midley, who lives with his bossy mother, and works monitoring the pollution from a large smokestack. One night his mother is taken to hospital after being overcome by the pollution, and Tim invites a stripper, Anita Newlove, to stay in his house until the weekly train departs. Anita refuses to leave, and takes his mothers place after she dies.
- Harriet and her boyfriend Nick are rock musicians in their thirties, desperately trying to land a recording contract. Harriet hatches a plan to get the rich older bookworm, Jeremy, to fund them by stringing him along by pretending to love him. She even goes so far as to marry him, hoping for a quick divorce.
- Tom is a working-class student in his last year at high school, and hopes to win a scholarship to the university. He and his friend Bill are obsessed with watching women, and blame their lack of success in seducing them on not having a car. Tom studies with the rather plain Cathy, but there is a casual camaraderie between them. Tom goes steady with the buxom Elaine, but never gets very far with her, as she is saving herself for marriage. Eventually Elaine persuades Tom to propose. Meanwhile, Cathy and Tom's playfulness goes too far, and she becomes pregnant. Bill's friends threaten to say that they all had sex with Cathy, if she forces Tom into marriage.
- Old Vienna, at a time when the waltz was considered an immoral dance. Maria promises her dying father, the Emperor, that she will follow the wishes of the Council of Ministers when she assumes the reign. Empress Maria wishes to marry the dashing Count Franz von Hofer, but the old fashioned Council advises against it due to his philandering reputation. The Prime Minister's daughter, Cenci Prohaska, asks Maria to help her marry her beloved Lieutenant Stefan Ravenne, because her father has plans for her to marry the rich, but boring, Ferdinand Hohenlohe. Cenci tells her that she wore a mask to waltz at the Golden Lantern and that von Hofer flirted with her there. So Maria hatches a plan to also visit the Golden Lantern in disguise.
- Bintou is beaten by her husband Abel, for using housekeeping money to pay for her daughter to go to school. He believes that only his sons should be educated. Bintou is determined to earn the money herself, but the only skill she knows is growing millet sprouts. She has to find the pots, and obtain sacks of millet from the storekeeper, while her husband continually sabotages her efforts.
- Seventeen year old Isabelle Marks lives in Toronto with her divorced mother and finds her life directionless. Isabelle becomes involved with an anti-nuclear group that her boyfriend Jessie 'Fixit' is connected with and is arrested at a demonstration.
- Christopher, a middle-aged man who is obsessed with repairing old radios, marries the Russian bride Natasha. She comes to live with him and his mother Dora in his London house. Dora instigated the marriage in order to have someone look after her son when she dies. Natasha is bored as Christopher takes no sexual interest in her, and she is treated as a servant. Eddie, an out-of-work actor, stirs up the household when he befriends Christopher and Dora, in order to seduce Natasha.
- 12-year-old Lily lives with her father, who has been suspended from the police force, and her stepmother. Her parents sell Lily's aging dog to Mr. Teban for dog meat. Lily convinces Mr. Teban to return her dog, then begins a friendship with the dog-meat seller, much to the disgust of her family and friends. Mr. Teban becomes her surrogate father, and supports Lily against her abusive father and ineffectual stepmother.
- Des works at a boring job, and his girlfriend Julie is pressuring him to get married by claiming to be pregnant, so that she will not have to work. Laurie is living a life of quiet desperation with her husband Colin, an aspiring writer who refuses to look for a job. Des meets Laurie while visiting a work-mate who is dying of leukemia. While they go for a drive, Laurie invites Des to a rent party at their house. After this Vancouver counter-culture party, Colin finds Des and Laurie in bed together.
- In Paris, unhappy movie actress Catherine Crachat becomes infatuated with the mathematician Pierre Indemini, but then breaks up with him. After a film shoot in Vienna, Catherine stays with a rich admirer, Fanny Hohenstein. Fanny has a history of many lovers of both sexes, two of whom killed themselves over her.

- The wild and wanton Francisca, known as the "The Tigress," is the eldest of three sisters, who are bosses of a farm in Ecuador. A medicine man tells Francisca and Juliana that their youngest sister Sara must remain a virgin to protect their land. A travelling salesman, engaged to Sara, tells the police that she is being kept locked up by her older sisters.
- Alex arrives in a small town to audit the largest employer, Turnbull Chemicals. All the hotel rooms are full with a convention, so he stays at the run-down Michelle Apartments, in the room of a woman who had just died. He is attracted to Madeleine in the apartment above, until he discovers she has a maniacal husband.
- Three Polish mathematicians are the first to crack the sophisticated Enigma code used by the Germans just before the Second World War. They build replicas of the Enigma machines and manage to get two of the machines to the British and French code-breakers before the German invasion of Poland in 1939 and ask that recognition be given to their work at the end of the war. After the invasion, the Polish cipher bureau escapes and continues their decoding in Algeria and unoccupied France. Despite being tortured, they refuse to divulge their knowledge of the Enigma to the Germans.
- The rise and fall of a singer Yoshio Fujimura. Fujimura entertains the lower class passengers on the ship home from Europe, and is traveling with Ayako, a maid who had fallen in love with him. On their arrival in Japan, a society woman, Natsue Omura, who is meeting a famous tenor from the first class, is attracted to Fujimura. Natsue introduces Fujimura to an agent and, under his guidance, sings the song "Furusato" which becomes a hit. As he becomes famous, Fujimura ignores Ayako and lives the high life with Natsue and her society friends.
- Cheung, an illegal immigrant in a completely Chinese area of New York, is caught by two US Immigration Officers. He arranges to pay Cindy Li, the Chinese-American sister of his young friend, to marry him to help his application for a green card. The Immigration Officers are suspicious that the marriage is a sham when they don't find them living together. Meanwhile Dai Fu is threatening Cheung and his roommate, another an illegal immigrant, if they don't make the payments for being smuggling into the US.
- Marita Lorenz, the daughter of a German sea captain, recalls how she became the mistress of Fidel Castro in Havana soon after the Cuban revolution in 1959. After being six months pregnant with his baby, she was drugged and given a near fatal abortion. She was then recruited by the CIA and Mafia to assassinate Castro, but she threw away the poison pills just before she met Fidel. She then worked for the CIA in Florida and, in 1962, had a daughter while she was the mistress of an ex-dictator of Venezuela. She later married an FBI agent, by whom she had a son, and they spied on UN diplomats in a New York apartment. She claimed her spying days were over when she testified, in the 1977 Kennedy Assassination Inquiry, about her connection to Frank Sturgis and Lee Harvey Oswald.
- Tamio Moroi graduates from a prestigious university and obtains a job at the Camel Brewery in a distant town. He is keen to work hard, but is warned to take it easy and just appear as if he were working. He receives a letter from his father saying that his mother is going crazy. After hiring a psychiatric student from his university to investigate his mother, she comes to visit him to tell him that it is really his father that is going insane. His university girlfriend, Miss Iki, visits him in his bleak dorm, after losing her teaching job, but he cannot afford to marry her. A while later Tamio loses his job, due to a series of odd ailments. Finally he obtains work as a school janitor, and meets Miss Iki again in the unemployment line, but finds that she is now married - to a janitor.

- Seven interconnecting stories that take place in Russian bedrooms. These include a son visiting his complaining bedridden mother, a middle-aged couple bickering, one soldier bullying another in an army barracks, a rich childless housewife picking up the soldier for rough sex while her husband has a tryst with another man arranged by computer, and a wife who asks to be handcuffed to her bed while being videotaped by her lover.
- Prague, 1920. Milena's father wants her to follow in his footsteps and be one of the first female doctors in Czechoslovakia, but she is determined to be a writer. She elopes to Vienna with the Jewish music critic Ernst Pollak, and starts a correspondence with Franz Kafka. She leaves Pollak and returns to Prague with her father, where she befriends and translates Kafka. As a journalist, Milena covers the 1923 Ruhr worker's strike and meets the communist architect Jaromir. They marry and have a daughter. Milena writes for a Marxist paper till her husband leaves for the Soviet Union. She then confronts the rise of Nazism in the years leading up to the Second World War, and ends up in a concentration camp.

- A pregnant woman, Kate, questions whether or not she should leave her husband, Ollie, despite him being the object of envy for many of Kate's friends.
- A documentary about Li Yang, who tries to teach large numbers of Chinese to speak English, using unusual methods. He holds motivational rallies, where he gets the crowd to shout out English phrases, in order to instill confidence, and tells them not to be afraid of losing face. His goal is to increase Chinese trade, and export Chinese culture, to the main world markets: North America, Japan, and Europe. After the rally, they can continue their English lessons using his taped courses.
- The Princess of Monte Cabello is divorced and is granted custody of her beloved daughter. Her ex-husband's mistress hires private detectives who take seemingly incriminating photographs of the Princess with the actor Jacques Wilson. The Princess is devastated when these cause her daughter to be taken from her, and the Princess then falls into the clutches of Wilson. In order to pay his gambling debts, Wilson forces her to humiliate herself by appearing in a play. The Princess sends a note to the Prince of Monte Cabello saying that after the first performance she will not compromise his name again.
- The aging Swift family of one brother, Jasper, and three sisters, April, May and June, are forced to live together in the run-down family mansion and they all get on each others nerves. One-eyed Jasper is the only one who does the cooking and he has occasional meetings with a monk from the nearby monastery. April was left some money when her husband died and is now practically deaf. May is a spinster who gives talks on flower arranging and also steals ornaments. The youngest, still called Baby June, was an avid horsewoman, but now relies on her farmhand Christy Lucey to train and ride her horse. One day, to their surprise, cousin Leda comes to visit and elicits various embarrassing family secrets. Leda, who is half Jewish and used to live in Vienna, stayed with the family when she was a teenager, but they thought she died in a concentration camp in the war.

- As a car full of an assortment of characters rolls down an embankment and bursts into flames, the old driver says "See You in Hell, Friends." The relations between the characters are shown in flashbacks. The pretty Rita and her fiancee Petras meet the old colonel, and come to live in his farmhouse. Rita marries the colonel as well as her fiancee, and has a daughter Christine. The colonel's supposed father shows up, and also makes amorous advances on Rita. They all live blissfully together until two holy women with axes arrive. The women start chopping down trees to build an ark. Rita starts having nightmares and Christine is crucified.
- Lily and her three youngest children join her husband David Sutton, a doctor in an isolated northern Alberta town. Their eleven-year-old son arrives later from boarding school. David conceals a dark secret which caused the family to leave England without telling anybody. They befriend a neighbor Rosanne, who throws out her boyfriend after he beats her up in a bar. Lily, who is very English and out of place in the town, hires the half-Native Rosanne as a housekeeper, and eventually the two women become good friends, until the secret emerges again.
- After five years of travelling abroad, Alex arrives back in Montreal. All he has with him are a back-pack and a slip of paper with an ex-girlfriend's address scrawled on it. When this address turns out to be a demolished building, Alex feels like - lost. His long journey has ended with a pile of rubble. For a while, he allows himself to drift through whatever situation life throws his way. But when he moves into an apartment building with an odd, lively array of characters, Alex desperately tries to ground himself. He longs to become part of a family - any family - whether its a prefab family (with Anne, a single mother of two), a family "by default" (his neighbours), or a family "in waiting" (with Ayla, the single ex-girlfriend of his best friend). But Alex has to decide whether he wants to stay put or keep moving. He wants to keep all of his options open - before they disappear.
- Mossane is a beautiful 14-year-old girl who has just reached marriageable age in a village in Senegal. She has many suitors, including a simple-minded farmer's son who plans to drag her away. Even her own brother Ngor is in love with her. However she is in love with Fara, a poor student who has returned to the village, while the university is on strike. At birth, she had been promised in marriage to Diogoye, who went away to work in France. Diogoye, who supplied her parents with many things over the years, has now sent a dowry, and asked that she be married to him in the village in his absence; she would then be sent to France.
- Claudia, a single bored Milan travel agent in her thirties, takes evening classes in Russian and tries to get to know her teacher Boris from Kiev. Boris says that he is reluctant to get involved with his student, but asks Claudia to put up his beautiful Ukrainian cousin Olga for a few days while he is away on business. The women get along quite well, but Claudia is distressed when Olga disappears without taking her suitcase, money or passport.
