- Tod and Buz are in Philadelphia visiting a friend/mentor of Buz from his New York Hell's Kitchen days. The old friend, a social worker trying to tame a quirky local gang leader, is killed after playing a rooftop "chicken game". Tod and Buz run into major trouble after staying to help a girl whose boyfriend has left the gang.

The one-time Death Row prisoner recalls the agonies he went through as he awaited death by gas chamber. As his story is detailed tension builds and two questions remain to be answered-(1) "Will the judge crack?" and (2) "Will the execution be carried out?"
- Tod in the Los Angeles area, goes to work as an aide to a wrestling promoter who is owed a debt by a lady with a husband just released from prison in Hungary. The promoter loves the woman and seeks to break up the marriage. Buz is not seen - he is in an isolation ward at Pacoima Hospital with a "mysterious virus".

- A "happily married" and well thought of businessman witnesses a murder. Unfortunately, he is at his mistress' apartment when it happens. His dilemma about whether or not to report what he knows to the police is heightened further when a man he knows to be innocent of the crime is arrested.
- A well organized team of extortionists kidnap a group of businessmen on a chartered fishing boat. Ransom amounts and instructions are phoned to the victims' wives. The NYPD becomes involved in the case when the charter boat captain is found tied up and drugged-but alive. Meanwhile, the businessmen plan a revolt.

Local teenagers show the man no respect and decide to play a Halloween "prank" on him--that causes the re-awakening of a bad experience he suffered during the war...and might lead to death.

She is a local girl who has made it big and has mysteriously come home despite being the star of a current hit on Broadway. Buz quickly falls in love with her and becomes serious. Tod knows her dark secret.
- A ballet dancer hires Gunn to find her old dancing partner who has recently broken out of a sanitarium. He holds a grudge against her and before being committed he had threatened her life. The girl's new beau, a gangster, vows he will kill the "sick boy" if he finds him before Gunn or the police do.

A "black book" filled with ladies telephone numbers doesn't include all of his conquests, including a woman who later confesses to the murders. Adam finds holes in her story and eventually plays a hunch which causes a suspects alibi to fail.
