Les and Cilla arrive back on the Street to find that Roy has left for Spain with Chesney. Norris offers Mel a bed for the night at Emily's house while Blanche buys his drinks. Jack's homing pigeons return and Danny and Norris's scam is exposed. Roy and Chesney miss their flight when they spend their time in the viewing room. Angela's beside herself when she's told that although the police will be dropping the murder charge she can still expect eight years for perverting the course of justice and assisting an offender.
- A visit to a casino brings Peter's affair into the spotlight. Angela remains too frightened to leave the house. Gail bans Audrey from seeing her grandchildren.

Tommy and Angela fill Sally in on Rosie and Craig's burgeoning relationship. Sally isn't impressed as she doesn't want Rosie distracted from her quest for stardom. Maya offers to take on Todd's shifts at the Corner Shop if he gets the porter's job. Sunita dreads the idea. Tracy listens to Ken's advice and decides not to report Karen to the police, but she swears that she'll get her own back when the time's right. Liz tells Karen about her dead daughter, Katie, hoping Karen will understand why she thinks so much of Amy. Karen accuses Liz of dragging up Katy's memory to make Steve feel guilty about the part he played in Katy's death and calls her sick. With pure hatred in her eyes, Liz spits in Karen's face and leaves.
- Stephen tricks Michael into helping him to empty Underworld's bank account. Audrey and the Platts digest a series of bombshells. Sally grows frantic over Tim's disappearance.

Mel dupes Roy into giving him a free lunch in the café. Candice prepares for an interview for an eye-in-the-sky traffic reporter's job. She stands on a step-ladder with a map spread out on the carpet. Cilla has a brainwave. She tells Les to propose to her so they can replace all their knackered household appliances with new ones as wedding presents. Les and Cilla get engaged.
- Angry Charlie's back at the Rovers having explained to the police that he was referring to a sealant gun. Betty's very apologetic. Mike and Penny agree to go to Spain. Adam refuses to go as he wants to get stuck into his new job at Underworld and Penny's factory. Dev and Charlie icily agree to stay out of each other's way in future. Norris tells Mel that he's started writing his own novel - it's a thriller set in the world of stationery. Leanne agrees to go with Jamie on his next trip to Birmingham to see his mother. Everywhere Shelley looks she can see people gossiping about her and Charlie and the incident with the "gun". Charlie makes light of it and presents Shelley with the sealant gun mounted on a plinth to put behind the Rovers' bar. Mike shows the first signs of becoming forgetful but neither he nor Penny notice anything unusual. Norris gets everyone at the Book Club except Ken to agree to put in £200 to pay for the publishing of Mel's book The Canary's Last Song. Liz suggests that it's time Maria and Tyrone moved in together. To Tyrone's delight, Maria thinks it's a good idea. Hayley's disappointed to learn that Roy's taking her to Burnham Thorpe for the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar and not to Naples as she'd hoped. Ken doesn't trust Mel and resolves to expose him for what he is.
- Jenny steps in to make Rita's daunting mission more bearable. Claudia's proposition prompts some soul-searching from Ken. Tim pleads with Sally to forgive him.

Jamie explains to Leanne that he went to meet his mother in Birmingham. Leanne tells Danny their rendezvous is off but refuses to tell him why. Mike's delighted when Penny says she still wants to move in and that Adam's welcome to live with them. Charlie's shocked and Jason's amused when the husband of the woman he's been seeing arrives at the yard and punches him in the face. Drunken Mel suggests to Audrey they should go for a lie down. She refuses. Charlie lies to Shelley saying that Dev got his own back by hiring a heavy to punch him.
- Sunita's upset that she and Shelley are no longer friends. Fred's furious with Charlie and Shelley's behaviour and threatens to fire Shelley. Danny's put-out when Adam starts work in the factory. He takes it out on the girls. Hayley's worried that Roy's behaving furtively but Frankie tells her that he's booking a surprise break for them in Naples. Hayley's delighted. Diggory bulldozes Roy into agreeing to buy his bread from him. Norris intends to persuade the Book Club to raise the money to fund the publishing of Mel's next book. Betty overhears Charlie on the phone asking for a sealant gun. She misunderstands the type of gun and thinks that he intends to kill Dev. Norris warns Dev his life's in danger but Dev's disbelieving. Danny's relieved when Penny offers Adam three days a week work at her factory. Norris phones the police and reports Charlie for intending to shoot Dev. Mel's about to leave, having stolen some of Emily's ornaments, when Norris tells him about his idea of raising money for his book. Mel secretly replaces the ornaments, and agrees to stay. The police arrest Charlie, who is furious and denying all knowledge of a gun. Shelley's distraught as he's driven off in a police car.

He's got a divorce and fancies marrying her and she fancies him too. Len tells her he can't advise her as it's a personal matter to her. Harry is now a site foreman and marriage will give Terry a settled home. Len doesn't think she'll go through with it. Bet returns and calls on Tom Russell. She invites him round to share a half bottle of whiskey. Ray returns home with a celebratory drink to the news that the doctor has rung to say it was a false alarm. Deirdre admits she's disappointed as she got herself excited at the thought. They both feel a bit flat. Tom tells Bet about his dead marriage and how he wants to start trying to find romance again. She tells him that he has little chance of meeting a girl of his dreams and to go back to his family. Sat with Len, Rita starts to talk herself out of marriage, thinking that she's satisfied with all that she's got. Len tells her he never got married again because of sheer inertia but he's also happy with his lot. He asks her if she's definitely going to marry Harry and she shakes her head. Deirdre thinks of what might have been as Bet settles down for another night in bed alone.
- The word spreads that Deirdre is pregnant. She puts the gossipers right. Len gets a phone call to say that someone is coming to stay and gets Hilda to tidy the house in readiness but he won't say who his guest is. Ray enjoys everyone buying him drinks before Rita tells them he's not going to be a father. Rita thinks Len is making the house tidy for her but it is Elsie Howard who arrives at Len's, suitcase in hand.
- Auntie Edie goes away for a few days and Mavis doesn't want to sleep in an empty house. Emily invites her to stay at No.3. Ernie is annoyed as it's their fourth wedding anniversary. Ray tells Deirdre he's doing a foreigner but really goes to a charity stag night at the Gatsby Club with Alf. Ernie agrees to join them. Annie considers putting on a Mastermind competition. Ernie gets drunk and is used as a prop by a stripper. The brewery promise a prize to Annie. Deirdre feels sorry for Ray working not knowing he is catching strippers' bras. The Gatsby is raided by the police.
- Alf considers resigning before he's sacked. Rita gives Fred tickets for the Gatsby Club. Ken shows Wendy off in the Rovers. Tricia realises she, Gail and Elsie will be evicted when Renee buys the shop. Alf takes a shine to Renee. Fred tries to build up courage to ask Rita out.

Wendy leaves the party to meet Diana Kenton. Stan is let out of the sack when he can't breathe. He can't get out of the chains and Wally disappears. Wendy meets Roger.

They arrange a meal. Ken is angry and bitter as he loved Wendy Nightingale. He tells Elsie she can have No.11 back. Fred asks Rita out. She tells him that she's going out with someone else although she isn't. He gives her a pot plant. Derek has to work and cancels the meal. When Fred arrives to see if Rita's date's turned up, she pounces on Derek and passes him off as her boyfriend. Fred admits defeat.
- The residents tell Ken that Albert doesn't encourage them to take an interest in his affairs so they don't. Albert goes off and Ken searches for him. Ken finds Albert at the allotment. Albert tells him the council are taking it off him because he's too old to look after it. Renee accuses Emily of reporting her as she's religious. Ken pays Albert's electricity bill. Albert tells him people don't give a toss about old folk. Ken tells Alf he's changed his mind - he wants to stay on. Gail tells Renee it was Tricia who reported her. Renee apologises to Emily. She tells Emily she only wants to make friends with everyone. Emily gives her advice on running a shop. Ken asks the men to help Albert on his allotment. Ray gives Annie a £25 deposit for the party. Deirdre finds out and is furious and tells him to get the money back.
- Ernest chastises Emily for selling her wedding ring. Nellie delights in showing off her new car to an envious Annie. Albert remains determined to get his money out of Bertha.
- Terry misses the army. Bertha apologises to Albert and gives him £10. Annie discovers Nellie Harvey had to have eighty-six lessons to pass her test. Albert is horrified when Bertha kisses him. Elsie is upset when Gail loses one of her earrings whilst out with Roy Thornley. Nat Lumley threatens to thump Albert when he hears about the kiss but Ena intervenes and separates the two men. Elsie finds the lost earring in the stockroom. Len makes her realise that Roy must be married when he points out that he has to entertain Gail at the shop. Nellie challenges Annie to learn to drive in less than eighty-six lessons when she goads her.
- Elsie doesn't know if she should tell Gail that Roy Thornley is married. Emily finds the hospital exhausting. Elsie tells Gail about Roy's family but she doesn't believe her. Annie is annoyed when Hilda broadcasts the fact that it's her birthday. Elsie gives Roy the message from his wife in front of Gail. He tells Gail it was only a game - what did she expect? She gives him back his bracelet but he tells her he can't give her back her virginity. A young man arrives at the Rovers, wears thick spectacles and drinks several pints before saying that he is there to take Annie on her first driving lesson. It then transpires that he is a friend of Eddie's called Cliff Humphries who he called in in an attempt to set up an unamused Annie. Eddie does a paper round at The Kabin. Instructor Don Grady gives Annie her first proper lesson, to the residents' amusement.
- Ray stays in hospital for observation. The Haggerty boys, Kevin and Jimmy, run amok in the street. Roy Thornley doesn't know Doreen is divorcing him or that she is citing Gail. Elsie asks him not to defend the divorce. Hilda's washing is stolen, she thinks the Haggerty boys took it. Ray discharges himself from hospital, his arm in a sling. Roy apologises to Gail. She tells him she hates him; her reputation will be ruined. Stan steals the Haggertys' washing. Gail breaks down when Roy decides to defend the divorce. Renee returns the Ogdens' washing; she took it in when it was raining and put it in her machine. Stan is worried about taking the Haggertys' washing back, having heard about the size of Mr Haggerty.
- Gail refuses to work her notice. Fred, Terry and Alf plan another night with the dogs as the track wasn't open the night before. Albert is in profit as he sells his vegetables to the old folk. Elsie forces Gail to work at the shop. Ray buys a second-hand pram. Deirdre thinks Gail could take Sylvia Matthews to the industrial tribunal for unfair dismissal. Elsie threatens to take Sylvia to a tribunal on Gail's behalf. Fred, Alf and Terry buy a greyhound, Fred's Folly from Joe Mooney.
- Fred keeps the greyhound in the Rovers' cellar. He, Alf and Terry can't believe they spent £30 when drunk on the dog. Fred tries to keep Annie away from the cellar. Ray does the pram up in the yard as a surprise for Deirdre. Annie finds the dog in the cellar and releases it, thinking it fell through the trap door. The dog runs away. Deirdre gives the pram to young Darren Briscoe to carry round his bonfire wood in. Terry is so hung-over he can't remember buying the dog. Renee puts up official notices that she is applying for a drinks licence. Sylvia Matthews rings Gail and tells her that she's reconsidered her sacking and that she can keep her job. Ray is furious that Deirdre gave the pram away while she is furious that he wanted it for their child. Albert buys dog food from Renee who worries that he's hard up.
- The girls continue to undress Ernie. Vera pulls his shirt off and he runs away in his string vest and underpants. Gail gets drunk and kisses Terry. He reads more into it, especially when she tells him she doesn't want him to leave the area. Annie refuses to lend glasses for the party as they got the drink from Renee. Terry asks Gail to go out with him as he'd like to settle down. She laughs at him and says she's only with him as there's no one else. He calls her a tart and slaps her face. Len is angry when Marie Stanton dumps him for Mike. Ernie's clothes can't be found so he has to wear denims. Annie test-drives the Rover 2000. Terry leaves for Lancaster, planning to join up again. Renee is upset at being on her own. Ivy and Vera give Ernie's clothes to Emily. She questions why the girls undressed him instead of Mike or Len. Bet goes to the party fearing Vera has her claws into Mike but finds him on his own. He gives her the key to No.5 as a Christmas present.
- Gail is depressed as she's not doing anything with her life and people think she's a tart. Annie had to provide a blood sample in the police station. Annie discovers her car insurance is £200. She is annoyed as Kitty Stonely spreads the word round the Lady Victuallers about the breathalyser. Bet holds a house-warming. The residents are jealous of the modern house. Annie's blood sample proves she was below the limit. Mike arrives halfway through the party but doesn't mind. Len gets a letter from his son Stanley Fairclough saying he's coming up to visit with his fiancée.
- Deirdre hides away at the flat, embarrassed about her false alarm. The dance at the Community Centre takes place. Marie sets out to steal Mike from Bet. Emily and Ernest spend the evening apart after a row.
- More chocolates arrive for Albert. Hilda continues to feel ill. Annie threatens to sack her. Hilda tells Stan he'll have to stand in for her. Stanley Fairclough is annoyed at Len's flirting with the women. Stan intimidates the customers as he cleans the Rovers. Annie docks him £2 off Hilda's normal salary. Len tells Liz Brocklebank he'd like to hear Stanley invite him to the wedding. Annie refuses to give Hilda to rest of her wages as Stan did such a bad job. Hilda is furious to discover that Stan was only docked £2 and not £3 as he had told her. The chocolate company sends an official to The Kabin to investigate Albert's complaints. Rita is furious. Stanley tells Len he doesn't want him at the wedding. Ray is told that Deirdre has been taken into hospital.
- Hilda has had enough of the Ogdens' misfortunes. Ray worries that he won't make a good father. Annie buys a shawl for the new baby but Betty tells her that Bet's already bought an identical one. Ray brings Deirdre and the baby home. The residents coo over the new baby. Annie has swapped the shawl for a Babygro, only to find that Blanche has also bought an identical one. Mavis suggests to Hilda that her bad luck could be to do with living at a house numbered 13 and Renee backs up this suggestion. Hilda tells Stan that she wants their door number changed to alter their luck.
- Mike grows annoyed as Bet treats No.5 like a tip. Deirdre and Ray clash over the baby's name. Blanche wants her to be called 'Maureen'. Mike is furious when Bet hires Hilda as a cleaner to sort No.5 out. He tells her she is the housekeeper and should do the work herself. Emily walks out of the Rovers when she sees Ernie drinking with Thelma James. Ray registers the baby 'Tracy Lynette' behind Deirdre's back and the two of them row over it with Deirdre accusing him of being sly. Blanche's boyfriend, Steve Bassett, arrives and Blanche shows him off. Mike asks Bet to lay on a dinner party for a client and to get a woman for him. Blanche tells Deirdre that she only works for Dave Smith; they've split up. Emily warns Ernie that Thelma is after him. Bet is annoyed when she thinks Mike thinks she's a bit tarty. In revenge she asks Betty to join the dinner party.
- Rita looks forward to Tenerife and her job at the Hotel San Antonio. Len worries that she'll never return. Bet goes flat-hunting. Len begs Rita not to leave. Hilda wants to get into No.5 before the Langtons but Stan doesn't want to move. Mike tells Renee he'll pay an extra £2 a week on top of Bet's offered £6 to let her have the shop flat but doesn't want Bet to know about it. Renee tells Bet she'll lower the price and Bet can move in. Bet is delighted. Mavis asks Len for Rita's job but he refuses to talk about it. Rita signs the singing contract. Bet moves into the shop flat. She unplugs the freezer in the shop instead of the heater by mistake. Len proposes to Rita and tells her he loves her.
- Rita doesn't know whether to marry Len or go to Tenerife. Mavis tells Elsie about the proposal. Renee discovers the shop freezer stock, worth £100 is ruined. Elsie tells Len he's stupid to marry again and also tells him Rita is bound to accept. He convinces her he needs Rita. Renee makes Bet feel better by telling her she's insured. Mr. Nesbit, the insurance man tells her she's not insured as it was an act of carelessness. Len refuses to give Mavis the job of manageress at The Kabin. She is upset and resigns. Eddie sells off Renee's defrosted food. Bet offers to work in the shop when she can to repay the damage. Len gives Rita the engagement ring he gave her in 1974. She refuses to take it and tells him she can't marry him; he's three years too late. Vince Denton looks for Ken.
- After a slight delay, Len and Rita become husband and wife in front of their friends and neighbours. Hilda whines about not being invited to the ceremony. Elsie is puzzled by the attentions of Ted at the reception.
- Elsie gets the dress cleaned and gives the girls the bill. Fred agrees to take Mavis fishing at the weekend. He worries about being on his own with Mavis and gets Alf to join them. Deirdre wants to have Tracy christened, Ray doesn't see the point. Suzie and Gail entertain Rod and Kevin. Elsie is pleased when Ted Brownlow makes a date with her. She tells the girls they can't have the lads round. Ted provides expensive food for a meal with Elsie. They enjoy each other's company. Mavis gets Renee to make up a fishing foursome.
- Alf, Fred, Mavis and Renee set off on their fishing trip. Deirdre refuses to listen to Ray over the christening. A hungry Suzie arranges a date between Ted Brownlow and Elsie hoping he'll bring food with him. Renee falls in the river. Mavis tries to rescue her and is pulled into the water, then Fred tries to retrieve his rod and also falls in. Ted arrives and takes Elsie alone out for Sunday lunch. Suzie is stunned. Reverend Copley, the vicar of St Luke's, tells Deirdre he won't baptise Tracy because the Langtons don't go to church.
- Len has a sprained ankle. Rita makes him go to see a doctor. Rita's uncle Sam arrives to give her away. Annie helps Rita organise the reception at the Greenvale Hotel. Alf gets drunk with Sam and has a hangover on the wedding day. Elsie discovers the mark on her dress. She is very upset and decides not to go to the wedding. Rita and Len leave for the church with their respective attendants.
- The Faircloughs return from honeymoon. Ray has redecorated No.9 for them. Mike uses pictures of Albert in the denim as a promotion. Hilda applies for the post of cleaner at the factory. Renee is pleased when Alf invites her to the pictures. Elsie gives Hilda the cleaner's job. She starts work straight away. Ted Brownlow plans to take Elsie out for a meal but Len arranges for them to have a meal at No.9 instead. Rita is furious.
- Deirdre tells Ray they're not going to London if they can't find someone to look after Tracy. Ray gets the Bishops to agree to look after her. Eddie and Ken talk Ena into being Queen Victoria on the Silver Jubilee float. Fred portrays Sir Francis Drake, with one of Jack Walker's bowls. Ernie is Walter Raleigh, Ken is Sir Edmund Hillary and Eddie plays a caveman. Annie is Queen Elizabeth I. Emily is thrilled to have Tracy for a weekend. Stan has to move the lorry in the night and leaves the lights on. Deirdre refuses to have the Bishops looking after Tracy; they've never had children. The players sit on the lorry and wait for the off but the lorry's battery is flat.
- Arthur Stokes buys the cabinet. Albert makes a nuisance of himself at the hospital trying to find the truth about Ena's condition. The doctor tells him she is suffering from severe concussion and is slightly improving. Ivy wants the girls to form a workers co-operative, Vera isn't keen. Mike gets Suzie and Gail to model the new denim designs in front of Ivy and the girls to show them how good they are. He tells them to have faith in their work. He convinces them that only he will lift them out of the slump, and not a workers co-op. In the meantime they'll have to go on a three-day week. Stokes tells Annie that Alf and Betty are an item. Alf tries to make him see he's got it wrong but Stokes persists in telling everyone. Albert talks to Ena whilst she is unconscious. She opens her eyes briefly. Mike switches the denim work to London and concentrates on the new models in Weatherfield. Elsie goes to Newcastle to see Alan Howard and try to interest buyers in the new designs. Ena regains consciousness and tells Albert to stop talking.
- A student surveys Coronation Street but Bet kids Annie he's from the council and is planning some redevelopments. Terry Bates turns up to see Rita. Ernie goes after a job as accounts manager at P and V Cables. Terry tells Rita he's having hassle from Doreen, his dad's girlfriend. She feels sorry for him. The council decides not to improve the area around Coronation Street. Alf tries to keep the news secret. Len tells Rita not to worry about Terry. Annie goes to the Town Hall to find out if the street is going to be demolished. She discovers that the council voted against including Coronation Street in an Improvement Area, thus denying the residents grants to modernise their homes. She is furious that Alf voted against the proposal, in favour of the area around the Red Rec. Terry hits Doreen and leaves home. Rita takes him in.
- Hilda tells Stan to sell the tandem for £12. Mike offers Eddie a labouring job at the factory but he refuses it. Albert tells Annie that he heard her on the telephone to Nellie Harvey telling her about Betty being a thief. Suzie and Gail are interested in the tandem but ask for a test-run. Albert tells Betty he'll swear in court that Annie slandered her. The girls buy the tandem off the Ogdens for £7. Len tells the Ogdens the bike is worth £100.
- Rita has to work longer hours at The Kabin whilst Mavis is running around after Auntie Edie. Hilda orders new clothes whilst waiting for her share of the tandem money. Mavis leaves Ethel Platt looking after Edie whilst she goes out with Derek. He tells Mavis that Edie is taking advantage of her. The yard gets an unexpected big cheque from a bankrupt firm so Ray and Len plan a big night out. Hilda refuses to believe the demolition story - she feels that Stan and Eddie are keeping the money from her and demands her share. Deirdre is not happy with Ray getting only 40% of the yard's profits. She tells Ray he's a mug and she's not satisfied with the set-up.
- Hilda searches No.13 for the tandem money. Ethel Platt accuses Mavis of making Auntie Edie worse by carrying on with Derek. Ken and Albert prepare for a visit from Peter. Edie begs Mavis not to leave her on her own but Mavis worries about losing her job. Deirdre pushes Ray into tackling Len for a 50% partnership at the yard. Len refuses. Rita makes Mavis work until 7.00pm to make up for all the hassle she's caused. Hilda takes possession of her new clothes. Eddie produces the tandem's bell as proof of its fate. Deirdre accuses Ray of being scared of Len. Len feels that the Langtons have got a case but Rita refuses to let them have more money. Len tells her it's nothing to do with her; it's yard business. Mavis returns home to find Aunt Edie dead.
- Annie returns from Jersey. Hilda discovers Annie's carpet is a cut-off from the Alhambra Weatherfield Bingo Hall, hence the monogram "AW". Bet warns her not to tell Annie. Betty agrees to return to the Rovers as senior barmaid. Annie decides to throw a sherry morning for the Lady Victuallers to show off the carpet. Alf helps Renee with her VAT. Elsie is furious when Rita refuses to refund her for a pair of tights when they ladder. Rita is livid when Len gives Elsie another pair. Alf takes Renee for a ride in the country.
- Gail apologises to Suzie when she discovers how Bob Birchall really is. Bet plans a party to celebrate Annie being in the Rovers for forty years. Bob accuses Elsie of turning Suzie against him and tells her that he doesn't want Suzie living with a tart like her. Elsie throws him out. Bob tries to force Suzie into his car, Steve stops him and Bob hits him. Bob tells Suzie he never wants to see her again. Annie is touched when the residents throw the party for her. She is astonished when Billy arrives as a special guest. Richard Cresswell comes from Newton and Ridley and presents Annie with a silver tray. Deirdre is followed home and is assaulted under the viaduct.
- Hilda's washing machine breaks down. Emily tells Ray that Deirdre knows who her attacker was. Harry Brown, the repair man, finds a button in the machine and gives Hilda a £6 bill for his troubles. Ray forces Deirdre to tell him that the man tried to rape her. She tells him she feels dirty and refuses to tell him who she thinks the man is. Mike invites Bet out for a meal but she refuses. Annie is upset that Billy is going back to Jersey so soon. Stan thinks that Hilda can take in washing to make some extra money. The paper carries a report of a man attacking another woman. Deirdre tells Ray it was the same man.
- Hilda is furious when Stan expects her to take in washing. Annie's cousin Charles Beaumont arrives. She is delighted. Mr Pritchard calls to tell the Ogdens that they've won third prize in a "Loving Cup Shandies" competition - a second honeymoon night in a five-star hotel with £25 spending money. Deirdre worries about being left on her own in the house. Hilda reveals her winning slogan: "Be a mistress as well as a wife and your husband'll still be your boyfriend". Stan doesn't want to go and suggests she goes on her own. She tells him that he's going - even if she has to chain him to her.
- Ray persuades Deirdre to return to work. Rita lends Hilda her negligee for the second honeymoon. Deirdre locks herself in the yard office when a man, Colin Bailey calls. It turns out he is a friend of Ray's. She breaks down and Ray takes her home. Fred has enough of people ordering him about. He tells Annie she can stick her job, he's had enough. Annie discovers Charles Beaumont has been borrowing from her staff and customers. He admits to being a con man and she gives him money to pay off his debts. She realises that the "Walker" name is more important to her than the "Beaumont" one.
- Episode 1766 aired 19th December, 1977 in the U.K. Ken throws an OAP party at the community centre. Ivy tells Elsie that the girls want to play a joke on Mike and need her help. Mavis is depressed over losing the house and Derek. Hilda turns up for the Christmas party at the factory dressed as Charlie Chaplin after Bet tells her that it's fancy dress. Mike is annoyed when Suzie invites a lad, Robin Smethurst, to the party. Both he and Steve are furious at her cheek. Ivy, Elsie and Vera play their joke - complaining about their small bonuses before descending on Mike with mistletoe. Mavis helps out at the OAP party. Gail tries to lure Steve away from the factory party but he's too occupied by Suzie and Robin. The comic booked for the OAPs doesn't turn up so Mavis recites poetry to them.
- *Episode aired on 26th December, 1977 in the U.K.* The Langtons return home from Blanche's. The Ogdens entertain Eddie for lunch. They all get drunk together. Elsie and the Faircloughs have a good meal before Rita and Elsie start sparring off each other again. With Ken in Glasgow, Annie reluctantly invites Albert to join her and Fred for a meal. The Langtons decide to throw a party. Ray is glad that Deirdre seems so much better and the Bishops are relieved. Eddie's stock of turkeys arrive - a day late for Christmas. Elsie gets her own back at Rita's age remarks and tells her that people are talking about her and Fred.
- *Episode aired on 28th December, 1977 in the U.K.* Eddie stores the turkeys in Renee's deep freeze. Albert sells them for him, telling people they're in aid of the Legion's War Heroes Tribute. The Langtons throw a party. Alf goes to the Langtons' party when he hears Renee is going to be there. When Fred pesters Rita for a dance, Len tells him to lay off. Fred hits him, smashing Deirdre's coffee table.
- Len has a black eye. He swears vengeance. Annie reprimands Fred for fighting Len. Fred refuses to pay Ray any money for the coffee table. Hilda decides to camp out for Perkins' sale to buy a colour TV for £5. The residents hang around the Rovers in the hope of a fight. Hilda camps outside the store. Len hits Fred in the Rovers. Rita drags him home. Hilda is horrified when a meths-drinking tramp, Ozzie, camps down with her.
- Hilda grabs Suzie's leg and tries to pull her down. She manages to keep hold of her shoe. She is horrified when a pigeon flies down from the hole into their bedroom. Stan weakly demands that Suzie pays for the damage to the ceiling. She puts on a limp and threatens to sue him for not having a safe ceiling. Ena is holidaying with the Lomaxes in Hartlepool. Fred offers to help Emily with any manual jobs now Ernie is dead. Hilda demands money for the ceiling but Elsie physically throws her out of the house. Emily sorts through Ernie's clothes to give to the mission. She asks Mavis not to treat her like an invalid. She plans to return to work at the hospital. Hilda goes up into the loft and puts her broom through Elsie's ceiling to pay her back.
- Elsie thinks she and the Ogdens should pay for their own ceilings. Len tells her it'll cost £25 to repair. Stan receives a Valentine card. Hilda knows who it's from. Ken invites Sally and Philippa Robson to a meal at No.1. Albert isn't pleased. Hilda tells Stan the card was obviously sent by someone at No.11. They decide to play them along and stage a loud row. Eddie sits back and enjoys the performance. Hilda is put out when Stan enjoys the shouting so much. Hilda beats the bedroom carpet in the yard, covering Elsie's washing in dirt. Albert gets out of the way as Ken entertains Sally. Ken gets on well with Philippa. Hilda plans a showdown with Elsie.
- Hilda borrows Rita's black coat to go to the Arbitration offices. Suzie uses the Western Front phone to ring Roger Floriet in France. She is on for fifteen minutes and puts the phone down when Mike arrives. Renee is thrilled when Alf buys her an expensive engagement ring from jeweller Donald Anderson. Suzie phones Roger again. He invites her over for the winter sports. Alf and Renee throw an engagement party. The Ogdens and Elsie go to court. Elsie dresses down to appear poorer than she is whilst the Ogdens are in their best.
- The Ogdens claim for the ceiling damage. Hilda verbally attacks Elsie, disrupting the proceedings. Bet accuses Betty of being jealous of Renee's engagement to Alf. Suzie phones Roger Floriet again and they plan a holiday together. The arbitrator, Mr. Franklyn, decides that Elsie and Hilda each pay for their own repairs. Elsie is satisfied but Hilda is furious. Suzie tries to put Gail off going to France. Steve is amazed to discover Suzie has been phoning France. He tells her that he'll tell Mike if she does it again. The residents celebrate Alf and Renee's engagement. Len toasts the happy couple. Alf tells Renee he wants to get married at the end of the month.
- Ivy collects signatures on a petition to bring back hanging for murderers. Alf tells Renee they're marrying a week on Saturday. Emily refuses to sign the petition; she doesn't believe in hanging. The Western Front's phone bill is £20 higher than normal. Mike tells Steve to sort it out. Suzie asks Steve to cover up for the phone calls but he tells Mike one of the girls has been phoning France. Mike tells him to find out who it was and sack her.
- Hilda plans to go to court to see Ernie's murderers' trial. Mike is adamant that Suzie is to be sacked. Steve gives Suzie a week's notice.
- Alf pretends to book a honeymoon in Scarborough to see Renee's reaction. She puts on a brave face. Emily and Hilda watch the trial. Renee is thrilled when Alf reveals they're really going to Capri. Mike gives evidence at the trial.
- Alf and Renee return from Capri. They feel Bet is in the way at the shop. With Elsie gone, Ivy considers applying for the supervisor's job before her enemy Ida Clough does. Mrs. Mottershead, the secretary of Len's party, the Ratepayers' Association, informs him that they don't want him as their representative any more. Len is furious. Ida has her eyes set on Elsie's job and gets her daughter Muriel to flirt with Steve. Vera applies for the supervisor's job as well causing Ida to row with her and Ivy. Mike tells Ivy, Vera and Ida that he'll hold a selection board for the supervisor's job.
- Mike tells Steve he has to interview the machinists for the supervisor's job. Len tells the council he intends to stand in the next elections. Vera is puzzled at her interview as Steve and Mike ask her what she believes is a trick question. Ivy surprises Mike at the interview by establishing the money and terms straight away - an extra £15 a week. She tells him she'd do the job her own way and would side with the girls if she felt they were right. Alf tries to stand up for Len but the Independents agree to tell the Ratepayers' Association that they will back whomever they put up for council, knowing it won't be Len. Mike tells Steve he's making him supervisor. Steve feels he can't produce the production schedules and suggests they give Ivy an extra £5 a week, call her senior machinist and get her to do the schedules. Mike agrees; Ivy is pleased; Ida thinks she shouldn't take the position. Len blames Rita for his being thrown off the council. He walks out, leaving her alone and crying.
- Ray fears that Len will have lost them a big contract by being thrown off the council. Because he can't get into the bathroom, Alf tells Renee that Bet will have to go. Len tells Alf he doesn't blame him for the council's reaction. Bet knows the Robertses want her out of the flat and evades the issue. Annie considers putting up for the election. Stan buys Hilda misshapen chocolates as a present. She thinks it's because he's feeling guilty over an affair. He is annoyed when Bet sprays him with perfume. Mavis is upset because she's forty tomorrow. Len gets a big contract purely because the contractor didn't like the idea of him doing the job whilst working on the council. The contractor, Jim Conran, asks him to put in a tender for a twenty-room hotel annex.
- Ken holds an Easter Bonnet parade on the Red Rec. He gets Mike to judge the contest. Suzie borrows a hat from Annie to wear in the Bonnet contest. Albert and the rest of the British Legion Domino Committee take over the snug for their meetings. Elsie phones Alan Howard asking to stall the divorce. He tells her he's going to marry Elaine Dennett. Ena returns from Hartlepool to find Albert and his pals in the snug. Albert demands she leaves the snug but she refuses. Elsie tries to drum up support for a girls' night out. When no one is interested she goes on her own. Elsie is picked up by Bernard Lane at a bar. The Lomaxes wanted Ena to stay with them permanently but she wanted to return home. Suzie marks Annie's hat with a bunch of grapes. Annie tells her she'll never lend her anything again. The paper reports that Len has to go to court. Elsie is horrified when Bernard thinks she's a prostitute and asks her if she'll go to a hotel with him. She is thrown out of the bar when she creates a fuss.
- Albert and the committee camp on the Rovers' doorstep in order to get to the snug before Ena only to find her there already, cleaning the horse brasses. Ena keeps interrupting the Legion's committee meeting. They try to ignore her. Elsie stays away from work. When Mike calls she tells him about being picked up. She's depressed and feels she's lost everything, even her self-respect. Ken asks Ena to try and get on with Albert, for the sake of their working together. Ena breaks the committee up by causing them to fall out with each other. Elsie leaves No.11, taking her clothes with her. Alderman Chapman tells Len the council are angry about him being charged with being drunk and disorderly. He asks for Len's resignation.
- Rita refuses to go to Len's last council dinner because of the gossip. Suzie and Gail decide to throw a wild party at No.11. Suzie plans to seduce Steve and tells Gail she can have her ex, Chris Wheelan. Steve takes Angie to Suzie's party. Suzie feels disappointed. In Annie's absence, Fred holds a Lancashire evening in the select of the Rovers. Gail enjoys herself with Chris. Rita refuses to sing at the Rovers. Suzie is furious as she has no man at the party. The Langtons enjoy Suzie's party by splitting up and flirting with others. A gatecrasher, Batesey, leaves No.11 when the booze runs out. He then steals Annie's Rover. Fred basks in the success of the Lancashire evening.
- Albert recites a poem - "To Sarah" - at the Lancashire evening and has everyone in tears at the words and his delivery. Angie gets annoyed when Suzie makes a play for Steve and he responds. Fred is embarrassed when Wendy Williams calls on him. Deirdre is amused when a teenager makes a play for her. Fred discovers the Rover has been stolen. The police arrive to talk about it and find the party in progress past closing time. When Steve refuses to leave the party Angie walks out. Suzie lures him up to Elsie's bedroom. Ray frightens Tim Gibbs off Deirdre. They both think it's funny that she was chatted up. Gail finds Steve and Suzie together after they've had sex.
- Bet is quite pleased that Mike is subsidising her rent but agrees to look for somewhere else to live. Len tells Alf he's pleading "not guilty" in court on the charge of being drunk and disorderly on Alf's stag night and is defending himself. Bet tells Mike he can continue to pay the extra £2 a week but he's not getting anything from her. He tells her she's down as hospitality and entertainment on his tax returns. She decides to pay the extra in future so the Robertses can't use it to evict her. Derek tells Mavis he never wanted to cause her pain over the house. He tells her that his mother is making his life difficult again and is pressing him to marry Beryl Challis. He asks her advice and she tells him to stand up to his mother. Renee is forced to tell Alf about Mike subsiding Bet's rent. He is horrified that they're living with a kept woman. Beryl catches Derek with Mavis and knows who Mavis is.
- Alf tries to matchmake between Bet and Fred to get rid of her. Rita wants to borrow the money from old friend Eric Summers but Len refuses to entertain the idea of getting money from one of Rita's old "fancy men". Fred proposes to Bet. She tells him she'd have to love whoever she marries and turns him down. The loan officer at the bank says he'll have to refer the matter of a further loan to his boss, which Len is certain will result in a refusal. Rita arranges for Eric to come the house without telling Len. Len agrees to see him to get Rita off his back. Eric offers Len £3,000 at almost 30% interest, twice the rate as would a bank. Len tells him that he'd rather go bust than borrow money off a loan shark. Eric casually insults Len several times as he leaves. The bank agrees to lend Len £3,000, putting him £6,000 in debt. Fred goes wife-hunting.
- The Langtons and Faircloughs can't believe the hotel job has backfired. Ray tells Jim Conran's partner Dick Rawlins that the yard still wants payment from him. Rawlins tells him the receivers have been called in and they'll eventually get some money. Emily feels sorry for battered wife Brenda Summers who she meets at the hospital. Rita worries that Len will want to sell The Kabin for funds. Emily tells Brenda she can stay at No.3 for the night. She hopes she'll see a social worker.
- Emily sees Ena at the hospital and worries that something is wrong. Mike brings in blacklegs to make the orders up. Steve urges him to talk to Ivy and negotiate. Ena tells Emily she's having back trouble. Fred shelves the idea of his own pub and finishes with Alma Walsh. Ray is working so hard on the hotel job that he forgets his wedding anniversary. Ivy demands Hilda takes her turn on the picket. Emily worries about Ena's back and asks Eddie to try to help her. Ena tells Eddie her bed is causing her back trouble. Hilda leaves the picket line to go to work at the abattoir. Mike brings the blacklegs in. Muriel Clough tries to stop them but fails. The pickets smash the van up and break a window demanding that the blacklegs leave.
- Ray and Len start doing emergency work on Sundays. Emily is annoyed at Brenda Summers' lack of drive as she spends all her time thinking about John. Ralph Lancaster assures Rita she's not past it and suggests she tries The Tannery social club. She doesn't like the idea of singing in a Working Men's Club. John tells Brenda he wants her to come home. Emily tells him Brenda is not returning to him. Ray and Len can't bring themselves to con the customers by charging the earth and Len only charges Mrs. Holt £5 instead of the planned £30 for unblocking her toilet. Rita and Deirdre think it's sweet. Emily is speechless when Brenda returns to John.
- Neither Renee nor Alf want Daisy Hibbert to live with them. Elsie decides to take the sewing room supervisor's job at Spencer's. Emily is embarrassed as she, Ray and Eddie break into Ena's flat. They take Ena's old bed and replace it with a new one. Elsie tells Mike she might work for him or Spencer's. Alf and Renee decide to let Bet stay at the flat so Daisy can't move in. Elsie tells Mike she'll return to the factory but wants a £5 rise. He refuses the rise but is glad she's returning. Renee tells Bet she can stay. Bet doesn't let on she knows Daisy wants the room. Ena is thrilled with the bed but tells everyone she's contacted the police; her life savings were in the mattress. When the residents begin to panic she tells them she's only joking. Ray tells Len the hotel developers have gone bust. They've lost the £3,000 plus the profit.
- Jason Pearce unhooks Elsie's laden washing line. Suzie and Gail have to wash all the clothes again as they're dirty. Marjorie Pearce confronts Elsie in the Rovers and accuses her of hitting an innocent child. Elsie threatens to hit her as well. Annie throws them both out. Mavis suggests Len turns the cafe section of The Kabin into a record shop. Mrs Pearce tells Elsie she's going to get the police onto her for assault.
- Fred worries as it's obvious Wendy Williams wants him. She terrifies him. Joe Williams arrives at the Rovers to see Fred. Fred fears that he's going to beat him up but is even more alarmed when Joe tells him Wendy loves him and he can have her. Joe tells him they'll stage an argument and he'll back down so Fred can have Wendy. Joe confronts Wendy and accuses her of being with her lover. He expects Fred to beg Wendy to stay but Fred gives in gracefully and tells Wendy it's obvious Joe wants her. She is thrilled but Joe is horrified. Rita and Deirdre break the news to Len and Ray that Jim Conran has found another developer and the hotel job is back on. The four celebrate.
- Albert dons a pinny and hoovers No.1 as Peter Barlow is coming to stay. Suzie attempts to bring Elsie out of herself and suggests a night on the town. Elsie is keen. The brewery launches a new house magazine called Over the Bar. The Rovers is chosen to be on the cover of the first magazine. Annie and Bet get dolled-up for the photographer. Peter arrives at No.1. Suzie feels off colour and calls off the night out. Elsie decides to go to the pictures on her own. The photographer, Norman Hill, tries to take relaxed shots but Annie insists on posing for him. Elsie has a rotten evening and takes a taxi home. She doesn't have enough money to pay the driver Ron Mather. He takes a cup of tea instead as payment.
- Bet has a date with the photographer Norman Hill. Peter Barlow reveals he has a girlfriend called Jenny. The sales figures are down so Mike pushes the staff harder. Edith Tatlock phones Peter with his 'O' Level results. He's disappointed with them but can't bring himself to tell Ken. Annie and Bet are furious to see Betty and Eddie are on the magazine cover. Elsie is pleased when Ron Mather calls again. Norman apologises to Bet about her not being on the cover and invites her out to the Gatsby Club but she refuses. Ken is annoyed that Peter tells Albert more about himself than Ken. Peter's behaviour surprises him when he's uptight. Ken swears to find out what's going on.
- The police tell Elsie it is now a crime to hit a child, but let her off with a warning. The Kabin cafe is closed and Rita starts a record selection. Dawson's Cafe opens with Emily running it. Janice Stubbs is taken on as waitress. Joe Dawson is furious when trade is slow. Wendy Williams calls on Fred and tells him her husband is up to his old tricks. Wendy feels that she could be happy with Fred. He feels uncomfortable as she stares at him all the time. He allows her to stay the night at the Rovers, but gets Betty to act as chaperone. Mavis is upset by rockers at The Kabin.
- Deirdre worries that Ray is wearing himself out doing too much overtime. Elsie discovers Ron is often seen with another woman. Joe Dawson has his pies cleared by an analyst. Albert investigates the cause of the illnesses. Annie goes down with the stomach bug. Ray is nervous when he finds himself between Deirdre and Janice at the Rovers' bar. Elsie tries to find out who Ron's other woman is. Suzie and Gail do a survey to see what all the ill people have eaten. They realise everyone bought something from Renee.
- Rita is annoyed to discover from wholesaler Bob Scott that the LPs that are sold in The Kabin aren't sale or return. She orders Mavis to become pop-conscious to see what will sell. Peter starts at Weatherfield Comprehensive. Mavis's back goes whilst she's alone at The Kabin. Janice makes Emily feel guilty, telling her she hasn't seen Ray for days. Mr. Garfield from the hospital sees Mavis and straightens her back. Ena's free bottles of stout start - she is thrilled. Len is annoyed when Janice uses him as a messenger boy to see Ray. He tells Ray to keep him out of it in future and warns him that he could lose Deirdre and Tracy.
- Eddie and Stan don't tell Hilda that they lent the cart to Tiny Hargreaves but let her think he stole it. Stan tells the police he was at the races when they want an alibi as the lead is stolen. They keep the cart for fingerprints. Eddie realises his prints will be all over the cart. Deirdre refuses to let Ray sleep in her bed. Ken realises Peter wants to go back to Glasgow. Tiny tells Stan the cart was stolen and gives him £25 compensation. Eddie tells Stan that Tiny will kill them both if he finds out the truth.
- Hilda is horrified that Stan has put £1 of change into the one-armed bandit. She refuses to let it leave No.13 whilst it has their money. Stan feeds the bandit with the gas and electricity money but still doesn't win the jackpot. The residents try to put the girls off London. Gail begins to worry that they're making a wrong move. Bet uses the bandit when she calls into No.13 for a catalogue and wins the jackpot. Hilda demands her £6 back but Bet says the money's hers as she won it. Eddie takes the bandit away. The Ogdens can't watch television as Stan took the plug off and put it on the bandit so he could use it. The electric goes off and they haven't any money left for the meter - they have to sit in darkness. Gail gets cold feet about London so Suzie goes on her own.
- Gail worries about Suzie's fate in London. Karen Barnes tells Ken she's illiterate and wants to be taught. Ron tries to make up with Elsie. Karen doesn't want to go to classes and asks Ken to teach her. He agrees when he sees she's desperate. Renee offers Gail a job at the shop over Christmas. Elsie is pleased when Ron calls. They go for a drink together. Emily and Betty plan to spend Christmas together. Eddie recognises Karen as having a husband in Risley.
- Karen Barnes wants the reading lessons to continue and begs Ken not to give up on her. He agrees to continue. Len feels he needs Deirdre at the yard but Rita feels they can't afford her. She accuses him of being too soft-hearted. Hilda takes up abstract painting as a hobby. Rita tells Deirdre there's no job for her at the yard. Gail feels humiliated that she was stood up by Brian Tilsley. Karen kisses Ken on the cheek in gratitude. While Ken is out Dave Barnes forces his way into No.1.
- Eddie gives Hilda a frame for her abstract painting. Albert finds Dave Barnes inside No.1 and orders him out. Dave shoves him away and waits for Ken. Eddie shows the painting off in the Rovers without telling anyone who did it. Annie likes it and buys it for £20. Emily takes Gail on at Dawson's Cafe. Brian meets Gail in the Rovers - he is chatty but she tells him to get lost. Ken finds Dave at No.1 holding Albert prisoner. Dave threatens to kill Ken but Ken somehow manages to knock him unconscious to the floor. Albert keeps him in check with the poker when he comes to. Ken tells him he is not having an affair with Karen and advises him to learn to read and write himself. Albert thinks he's a fool when he lets Dave go. Hilda is thrilled that Eddie got £20 for the picture and they split the money in half. She is delighted that Annie has bought it and hugs Eddie. Dave wants the police informed so he can tell a court about Karen and Ken's affair. Albert tells Ken he's going to report Dave to the police.
- Suzie tells everyone she's demonstrating perfume. Annie tells Betty she's disappointed with the way she allowed Fred to carry on in her absence. Suzie feels daft dressed as a chef. Ted Thomas tells her she must have faith in the sausage that she is demonstrating. Hilda considers buying No.5 but Stan isn't keen. Brian wants Gail to meet his parents but she isn't keen. She tells him he'll have to tell Ivy he's seeing her. Hilda sees Suzie demonstrating in the supermarket and tells Elsie and Gail that she's cooking sausages. Suzie is embarrassed when Elsie and Gail turn up in the aisles and laugh at her. Brian and Gail babysit for Deirdre. Their kissing is interrupted as Tracy wakes up and cries. Ivy calls at No.5 to talk to Deirdre and finds Brian and Gail together. She is annoyed to find they're an item. Ivy tells Brian she wants to buy the house.
- Elsie is shocked to discover Ivy is interested in buying No.5. Len rushes about trying to do the work of two. Deirdre shows Ivy and her husband Bert around No.5. Bert doesn't want to move but Ivy likes the modernised house. Gail doesn't like Suzie walking round the house in her underwear whilst Brian is there, but he quite likes it. Ivy accuses Bert of being stubborn and awkward. He realises he's going to have to give in. They offer Deirdre £7,000 for the house and she accepts. Len installs a sink in the factory. Vera is put out that Ivy is moving from Inkerman Street where they both live. Ivy asks Mike to lend her the deposit on the house for a lower rate of interest than a bank. He agrees to a £500 interest free loan on the condition she talks the girls into a new work roster. Suzie thinks Gail is chucking herself away on Brian. She introduces Elsie to her new man, fifty-two year old Paul Stringer. He runs a model agency. Alone in the factory working, Len suddenly collapses.
- Elsie encourages Steve to ask Suzie out as she's depressed. He doesn't think it would work. Eddie fixes Mrs Fox's roof for her. Her husband tells Len there was nothing wrong with the roof and threatens to keep the ladders and tools unless Len gives him the money back. Len accuses Eddie of conning him and the customers and sacks him. Eddie is upset that Len doesn't believe him. Len believes him when Eddie describes what was wrong with the slates and takes him back. Rita spends £45 on a dress. Len is furious. Ron tells Elsie he's got a job as a chauffeur in Torquay. He asks her to join him as housekeeper in the same house.
- Suzie goes job hunting. Elsie doesn't know if she can start afresh in Torquay. Stan decides to ignore the fact that Ivy doesn't want his custom and cleans her windows. Ivy refuses to let Bert pay for the windows. Stan is outraged as Ivy watched him clean them and didn't stop him. Hilda throws a bucket of dirty water over the windows. Renee tells Ivy the best way to get back at Hilda is to ignore her. Elsie goes for the housekeeper's job and is given it. The Tilsleys decide to have a house-warming party. Ron sells his taxi. Elsie tells him she will go to Torquay.
- Elsie asks Mike to keep her job open for her in case she returns. He refuses, saying he's already advertised it. Bert and Stan make their peace and go to watch football together. Elsie worries about her future - Len tells her it's obvious she doesn't want to go but she doesn't want to let Ron down. Ron loves driving the Rolls. Elsie tells him she's changed her mind and can't come to Torquay. She's not cut out to be a servant. To give her a treat, Ron gives Elsie a spin in the Rolls. The Tilsleys throw their house-warming party. Brian is bored as all the guests are his parents' friends. Gail tells him to stop moaning. Hilda is annoyed when Stan goes to the Tilsleys' party. As Jack Duckworth isn't at the party, Vera invites Fred to take her home but he isn't interested. Mike starts the party with Suzie but dumps her for Deirdre. Stan drags Hilda to the party where she and Ivy make the peace. Mike asks Deirdre out, she is surprised. Elsie and Ron are sad that their relationship is over. He offers her marriage but she refuses. He leaves for Torquay.
- Gail celebrates her 21st birthday. Elsie returns from holiday and is delighted to hear Gail is engaged. Hilda persuades Fred to let her wash-up behind the bar as Annie and Bet are away, just so she can mingle with the party in the select. Alf returns from hospital. Renee treats him like an invalid. Gail's floozy mother, Audrey Potter, arrives and gives her approval of Brian however Gail isn't happy to see her. Brian tells Ivy he's letting her down by not going to the party. Suzie fancies the disc jockey Peter Hockley and lures him away from his turntable. Audrey dresses up and is the centre of attention. The men fall over themselves to please her. Bert persuades Ivy to attend the party. She and Audrey are cold towards each other. Fred has to end the select party as it's closing time so Elsie invites everyone round to No.11 after Bert has announced the engagement. Audrey leads the conga down the street. Rita is taken aback to see Len eagerly following Audrey.
- Ken objects to taking the blame for the break-up in the Langtons' marriage. He's worried about his reputation. He tries to persuade Deirdre to divorce Ray, citing Janice. To the embarrassment of Mavis, the Faircloughs are amused to discover Eddie spent the night in the flat. Len is shocked to discover Ray is divorcing Deirdre because of the letter he wrote to Ray informing him of Ken's involvement. Deirdre realises Len wrote to Ray hoping to reconcile Ray and her. She feels that Ken can have no real feelings for her. Eddie spends another evening with Mavis. He hears the noise too. Deirdre is upset that her relationship with Ken is obviously over. Eddie is scared of the noises.
- Gail and Brian see Father Harris about the wedding. She tells him she's willing to have their children brought up as Catholics. Deirdre falls over one of Tracy's toys and has fifteen stitches to her face. Elsie gives Mike a week's notice. She is furious when, in front of the machinists, he tells her she can leave straight away. Renee visits her mother leaving Alf to fend for himself. Gail is upset that she has no one to give her away. Brian surprises his parents by wanting a formal wedding. Rita matchmakes between Mavis and Jack Walsh. Mavis is annoyed as she's been to the dentist and her jaw is frozen. Gail asks Ron Mather to give her away. He tells her he'd be honoured. Rita invites Mavis and Jack for a meal. Elsie stuns Suzie by telling her she's put the house in the hands of an estate agent.
- Mike refuses to get involved in an exchange trip to Charleville as the machinists are too busy. Renee returns from her mother's. Suzie rouses Hilda into having a slanging match to put buyers off No.11.
- Ron Mather worries about Elsie's whereabouts. Stan refuses to buy Hilda any Christmas food as she's sold the Christmas Club money. Elsie returns to No.11. Ron doesn't believe she felt homesick. Ivy invites Audrey to spend Boxing Day with the family. Rita is furious when her Christmas present from Len turns out to be a box of chocolates. Elsie tells Ron their boss, Mr Pickering, couldn't keep his hands off her. He admits he knew Pickering fancied her. She accuses him of turning a blind eye and throws him out.
- The men return at 7.00am after spending the night with fifteen women at 32 Bessie Street. They go for an early morning "hair of the dog" in the Rovers and decide to tell everyone Alf tripped and fell and they all took him to hospital. As soon as they see their wives they crack and tell the truth. Ken lectures Susan about bringing Roy Stevenson back home. Elsie runs short of money. Fred tells Annie about Alf going to hospital and is annoyed that the others have confessed. Annie finds out the truth when she rings the hospital and pleases the women by presenting their husbands with a bill for their wives' drinks and refuses Fred his request for a night off. Rita is tired of living in what she considers a dump. Elsie considers asking Mike for the supervisor's job now Steve Fisher has left. Susan asks Ken if he intends to marry Deirdre. Annie tells Ivy that Elsie intends to ask for her job back at the factory. Ivy is livid.
- Mavis is advised to contact the police when her mysterious caller continues to harass her. Ken tells Albert that he is considering proposing to Deirdre. Rita's absence is common gossip and Len decides to go in search of his wife.
- Mavis fears that the police do not take her complaint seriously. Ken is annoyed to learn that Albert has been gossiping about his relationship with Deirdre. Len continues to search for Rita.
- Deirdre throws a party for Tracy's third birthday. Lorna Ferguson helps Stan tidy No.13 as Hilda is returning. Len tells Elsie he's angry with himself for letting Rita slip through his fingers. Hilda, Vera and Ivy return from France. Hilda is suspicious as the house is so tidy. She gives Stan a model of the Eiffel Tower as a present. Len offers Rita's job at The Kabin to Elsie. She turns it down for Rita's sake. Fred tells Hilda he wants £3 from Stan. Mrs. Bolton walks out of the cafe, leaving Gail on her own. Elsie agrees to join the staff.
- Stan tells Hilda the £3 was a bet from Fred and the house is tidy as Lorna Ferguson tidied up. She refuses to believe Lorna exists. Elsie starts work at Jim's Cafe. Ken and Alf look for somewhere for Ena to stay as her flat is being decorated. Fred tells Hilda that Stan has been renting the house out to couples. She is horrified and threatens Stan with a poker for using the house for lust and immorality. Eddie turns up with Lorna - Hilda is surprised that she's so respectable. Hilda encourages Lorna to go steady with Eddie who gets nervous that marriage is being hinted at. Elsie makes Len realise that Rita left him because he's selfish. Ken cooks Deirdre a meal. Len makes an announcement in the Rovers that Rita has left him. Elsie agrees to take Ena in, mainly to stop people gossiping about her and Len. Ken feels he has to propose to Deirdre when she tells him that she's open to offers.
- The Town Hall receives a letter from Charleville complaining about the workers' behaviour. Ivy tells Vera she's in trouble. Ena doesn't like the idea of living with Elsie but has little choice as the builders move into the community centre. Annie is ill and Betty and Bet have to man the Rovers. Vera worries that the Charleville police might be after her. Ena moves into No.11, horrified by the state of it. She sets to tidying up and stocking the kitchen. Les Carter, a reporter on the Gazette, investigates the French goings-on. Getting nothing from Bet, he turns up in the factory but an upset Vera and Ivy say they can't help him. Vera, Ivy and Hilda agree to keep quiet about the rave-up because they don't want their spouses to find out. Elsie welcomes Ena but refuses to drink in the snug with her when they go to the Rovers, even when offered Martha Longhurst's chair. Carter swears to Bet that he's going to get to the bottom of the story.
- Deirdre hasn't heard from Ken and fears she's frightened him off. Annie has had to go to Derby to look after Joan who is ill with mumps. Les Carter discovers from a journalist in France that the English party were given an official dinner, and some of the women left to party with a load of ex-paras. They ended up playing football with a gendarme's hat. The next day, a pair of knickers were found flying on the flagpole. Carter gets hold of a photo of three of the women doing the cancan. Alf refuses to identify any of the them, as do Betty or Bet. Vera confesses to Ivy that she brought the gendarme's helmet home with her. The Gazette prints the story. Hilda is upset that Stan doesn't believe she took part in the rave-up. Ena tells Elsie that if she stays with her they'll be at each other's throats so she's going to St Annes.
- Elsie enjoys having Ian McAllister about the house. Alf asks Len to look at his guttering but Len tells him he's off to Blackpool to find Rita. Stan is nervous of what the solicitors want and avoids them. Renee gossips to Emily about Ian. The solicitors, Rosenfield, Blackburn and Fox, write again telling Stan that Dora Entwistle of 2 Chapel Yard in Weatherfield has named him as a beneficiary in her will. Hilda wants to know who she was to Stan. He says he's never heard of her. Len finds Rita working at the launderette in Blackpool that Sam told her about. She is shocked that he's tracked her down. She tells him they've got nothing to talk about. He begs her to return home and have a fresh start. He promises he'll change but she doesn't believe him. She knows he means it now but also knows that really he doesn't care enough about her to change. She tells him it's too late and walks off.
- Elsie is concerned for Martin as he is despondent about getting a job. She tells him that he can stay with her if Linda agrees. Martin looks for a job in the building trade. Eddie puts him off talking to Len. Brian lets slip to Fred and Betty that Gail is pregnant. Gail isn't bothered and Ivy is pleased they can now talk about it to everyone. Elsie urges Martin to take no notice of Eddie and speak to Len himself. Arnold takes Emily and Tracy to the park. Rita is annoyed that Len is so impatient with Mavis. Martin tells Len he wants to be a plumber. Len takes him on as an apprentice. Len upsets Mavis by shouting at her when she prepares him a pineapple salad for his tea. He tells Rita he's not having the house turning into a health farm. She is angry to discover he's done Elsie a favour by taking Martin on but won't be nice to her best friend. Arnold tells Emily he loves her and wants to marry her.
- Hilda calls round to No.11 to borrow a cup of sugar. She finds the sofa ablaze and tries to drag Elsie clear but she has to call for Stan to help. Ken and Deirdre talk to each other at the party for the first time since they split. He tries to be close to her but she isn't interested. Stan and Hilda drag Elsie out of the smoke-filled house. Hilda breaks up Arnold and Emily's party for help. The fire brigade arrive but Ken and Stan have already put the fire out. Elsie is full of smoke but refuses to go to hospital. Dr Crawford advises her to give up smoking. Emily takes her in. Elsie has convulsions when she hears she owes her life to Hilda. Renee shows the Bannisters around the corner shop. Hilda is proclaimed a heroine. She makes the most of the situation and over-dramatises the events.
- Elsie can't settle at No.3. She has a chesty cough from the smoke and she refuses to stop smoking. Hilda makes a nuisance of herself by checking up on Elsie all the time, pushing home the point that she saved her. Eddie turns himself into a decorating business but no one wants his services. Alf is annoyed when Renee dresses up for her driving lessons. Elsie has difficulty referring to Hilda as her friend and feels obliged to buy her drinks. Hilda tells Stan and Eddie that they're now best friends but Elsie rages to Martin that she can't stand much more of it.
- Eddie has been thrown out of his room at Monkey Gibbons's house and he looks for fresh digs. Hilda refuses to take him in until he has a job. Elsie refuses to buy any more drinks for Hilda. Ken gives Eddie a reference as he goes job-hunting. Ivy is annoyed to discover Gail has been looking into employing a childminder. Eddie gets a job and Hilda agrees to him becoming their lodger before discovering he's a binman. She tells him that she's not having rubbish in the house. Elsie buys Hilda a noticeboard so she can note down when she's out of things and won't keep borrowing off her. When Hilda refers to the fact that she saved her again, Elsie explodes and tells her that next time her house is on fire to walk past. The Bannisters call on the Robertses and tell them they want to buy the shop but only offer them £15,000 - £1,000 below the asking price. Hilda discovers Eddie could be earning up to £80 a week on the bins. Betty is concerned for Wayne and Sharon Fletcher, two latchkey children near her home. When Wayne falls whilst his mother is out drinking, Betty takes them in. Ivy resolves to tell Gail that she's not happy about her plans.
- Alf tells Renee he doesn't like her driving with another man but she refuses to stop her lessons. Bert works out for Brian how much his weekly outgoings will be. Stan and Hilda decide to invite Eddie to move in as they feel they're the nearest to family he's got. Betty worries about the Fletchers. Ken advises her to report their mother to the NSPCC. Brian discovers they'll have £17 a week left to live on. Gail is sure they'll cope. When Renee spends all morning out on a driving lesson, Alf storms out of the shop and drinks in the Rovers. He worries about money; he wanted £16,000 for the shop and is having to find £28,000 for the new shop. Hilda offers Eddie her front bedroom for £20 a week. He agrees. She makes sure he pays the rent to her and not Stan. Renee tells Alf he's pathetic being jealous of Jim Lorimer. He forces her to make a decision over accepting the Bannisters' offer. She does and they are reconciled. Brian and Gail decide not to buy the house. The Fletchers' "uncle" - Reg Sudworth - tells Betty to keep her nose out of the family's affairs.
- Eddie starts on the bins. Alf and Renee quarrel when he refuses to give her driving lessons as his insurance doesn't cover her. Len advises them as they are having to change their cover for their new address, they might as well add Renee to the policy. Annie advises Betty to take care in her interest over the Fletcher children. Brian goes to the building society and cancels the mortgage. They get the deposit back but not the plot fee or the survey so they are £80 down. Eddie moves into No.13 and Hilda enjoys being a landlady to him. Brian gives the £300 back to Bert and Ivy. Gail can't face living with Ivy when the baby is born. Betty tells the regulars that she took the Fletcher children in and fed them herself. Ken advises her to report the matter to the NSPCC. Alf gives Renee a driving lesson after she pressures him. She scares him with her dangerous driving. Brian and Gail try to see possibilities in 15 Peterloo Place, valued at £7,250.
- Police and ambulancemen arrive at the crash site. Renee is rushed to hospital. Alf goes with her and is breathalysed. The crystals turn green. Renee undergoes emergency surgery but she dies in the theatre. Her spleen and her liver were both ruptured. The next morning, the news of Renee's death shocks the residents. Alf doesn't know what to do about anything. P.C. White makes him go over the accident for their report. The driver of the lorry has a broken leg and concussion and Renee's post-mortem is set for this morning. The NSPCC make an appointment to see Betty. The salesman of the houses on Willow Crescent Estate calls on the Tilsleys and tells them he has a cheaper house to offer them for £13,000 with repayments at under £100 a month. Brian doesn't want to know but Gail is keen. The house is vacant but only has the one bedroom. Alf begins to break down. Ken tries to comfort him.
- Gail and Brian move into 5 Buxton Close helped by Brian's friend Andy Rowlands. They haven't a bed and don't know if they can take the one at Ivy's house with them. With Annie and Betty away, Fred is instructed to take on a relief barmaid. The brewery sends Arlene Jones. Fred fancies her. Bet kids her that Fred has something mentally wrong with him. When some machinists fall ill, Mike mans a machine himself to get an important order out - the girls are amazed. The Faircloughs return from a motoring holiday to the news of Renee's death. The Tilsleys have a new sofa delivered. Gail is glad to be away from Ivy. Fred feels certain Arlene fancies him. Bert and Ivy give the bed to Brian and Gail as a house-warming present. Ivy starts to cry at the thought of Brian leaving home.
- Ivy uses her machine at the factory to make curtains for Gail in her spare time. Eddie is given a table on his rounds. Arlene Jones realises Fred fancies her and plays him along.
- Audrey arrives at Gail's house with her suitcase. Les Boden has thrown her out and she has nowhere to stay and she has given up her job. Gail lets her stay on the sofa. Deirdre panics when Tracy disappears. Ken and Alf search for her. Alf finds her locked in the bathroom. Tracy doesn't like it in there and starts to cry. Albert's old pal from the Somme, Monty Shawcross, visits him. Deirdre reads to Tracy through the keyhole. Alf gets a ladder up to the bathroom window but is too high up for Tracy to pass the key to him. Albert is jealous as Monty is marching with their old regiment to the Cenotaph on Remembrance Sunday. Audrey swears she's never going to get herself in trouble with men again. Tracy lets herself out of the bathroom after Alf has spent an hour trying to climb through the window. Jim Sedgewick decides that he doesn't want a pregnant waitress and tells Gail it's time she left the cafe.
- Gail tries to let everyone think that the cafe doesn't tire her out. Fred celebrates his fifty-first birthday. He is annoyed that Annie has gone away without acknowledging the event. Albert helps Monty Shawcross train for walking in Whitehall. Gail refuses to rest or stop work for another month as they need the money. She breaks down and Brian realises that she can't cope. He tells her that she must stop work immediately and she agrees. Audrey offers to take them for a meal. She persuades Brian to use a customer's car to take them out for the night. Betty gives in to Fred's whining and agrees to let him hold a party at the Rovers. No one wants to go to Fred's party but Mike, Bert, Ken and Alf feel sorry for him and attend. Alf and Mike have a contest to see if Alf can eat cheese quicker than Mike drink a pint with a spoon. Mike wins. Monty asks Albert to go to London with the regiment. Albert refuses, saying he's too old. Alf and Fred have a contest, this time with Alf drinking the pint. Fred beats him by cutting the cheese into bits first. Fred discovers his "mates" set him up and a tumble ensues. Fred, Alf and Bert fall over, scratching Annie's sideboard. Tony Newall spots Brian, Gail and Audrey out in his car.
- Tony Newall makes Ron Sykes, Brian's boss, knock £50 off his bill as Brian used the car. Ron is furious as Tony involved the police, thinking the car had been stolen. He sacks Brian on the spot. Gail breaks down when Brian tells her that he's been fired. The Swains' door sticks more and more but Arnold still refuses to pay the bill so Len still refuses to mend it. Annie returns from visiting Joan. Fred tries to draw her attention away from the sideboard. Emily arranges for Len to repair the door, saying that she'll pay him as she can't stand it going on any longer. Martin's ear goes septic so he takes the earring out. Ivy can't believe that Brian has lost his job and blames Audrey. She plans to see Ron about getting his job back.
- Mike turns down Frankie's request for investment in his video recording business. Stan is mortified when the doctor tells him he may have an allergy to beer. Emily makes a shock discovery.
- Len thinks working in The Kabin is easy. Rita challenges him to swap jobs and he agrees. As a result, Martin finds it hard working for Rita, and Mavis doesn't enjoy sharing the shop with Len. Bet phones the Gazette and tells them about the rubbish row. Sandy Lester, a reporter, investigates the bin story. The residents complain to them about the smell. Photographer Tony Watkins takes a fancy to Bet and takes her photograph sitting on the dustbins. Mavis has to run The Kabin as Len spends his time in the Rovers. She threatens to resign if he doesn't pull his weight in future.
- Martin smuggles Len's tool bag out of the yard so he can do plumbing jobs behind Rita's back to keep the company going. Bet's picture is on the front page of the Gazette along with the bin boycott story. She worries when the article quotes her as criticising Annie. Betty begs Eddie to take the rubbish away as Annie is away but the binmen still refuse to touch it. Ken can't bear to see Albert depressed over no longer having his medal and buys it back for him. Albert is annoyed but accepts it back in remembrance of his dead friends. Len is adamant that marriage is not a partnership, there has to be a boss - the man. Bob Atkinson offers the yard some work and asks Rita out for a drink to discuss the contract. The brewery sees the paper and demand to see Annie. Nellie Harvey phones Annie and tells her about the article. Annie phones Betty and says she's coming home, blaming the staff for betraying her to the gutter press. Bet panics.
- Emily refuses to answer the door to anyone but Deirdre. Deirdre tries to comfort her. Emily doesn't know if she's legally married or not. Bert hunts for a job. Ivy tells him there'll be nothing until New Year. Bet tries to get out of Boxing Day lunch with Annie but fails. Emily puts Ernie's ring back on her finger. Flora asks Emily to take Arnold back, she refuses. She tells Flora that she's getting on with her life. She gathers Arnold's things together and gets Flora to take them away. Hilda employs Mrs Palin as a cleaner as a Christmas treat for herself, at £1.75 an hour. Hilda spots Emily getting rid of all Arnold's things and wonders what's going on.
- Hilda starts to investigate Arnold's whereabouts. Eddie suggests that the Ogdens throw a Christmas party. Hilda doesn't like the idea. Mrs Palin starts work at No.13. Stan is shocked to discover that Hilda has hired Mrs Palin as a cleaner. Bert spends his time doing housework and cooking. Hilda agrees to hold a party when Eddie agrees to pay half. Deirdre urges Emily to come out of her shell as the street is full of rumours.
- Martin buys Karen an engagement ring with his Christmas money. Elsie worries that Karen won't accept him. Martin tells Karen they should do something positive and gives her the ring. He tells her he wants to be engaged. She likes the ring and says she will marry him. Ken buys a Volkswagen but an angry Albert refuses to go in it as it's German. Gail refuses to see New Year in at home so the family go to the Rovers. Karen gives Martin the ring back, telling him they're too young to get engaged. She tells him it would be best if they finished. Gail feels unwell in the Rovers. Martin packs and leaves for Birmingham. Elsie is upset to see him so hurt. He tells her he doesn't like it in the street any more. Gail goes into labour, Annie lets the family wait in the living room and calls for an ambulance. Gail and Brian go to hospital, through the Rovers' bar. Elsie sees the New Year in alone and in tears. Brian phones the Rovers and tells Audrey that Gail has had a 7lbs 2oz son. She passes on the news to the delighted regulars, Ivy and Bert who all celebrate.
- Rita enjoyed singing but found it hard. Ken asks Deirdre for a date. She agrees. Len feels that Hilda is trying to tell him something. A Dutchman called Dirk van der Stek calls to see Deirdre - he's a friend of Ray Langton's. Ray has made Tracy a present and Dirk delivers it. Deirdre feels awkward about giving the present to Tracy. He tells her that Ray has split with his girlfriend Annie after she lost her baby. Bert sets up a baby alarm for the Tilsleys. Dirk asks Deirdre out for a date on the evening she was to see Ken. Dirk tells her that he can't make any other night.
- Len thinks that Hilda suspects Rita has a fella. Rita tells him to ask Hilda. Fred's cheque bounces when Alf banks it. He demands his money back from Fred but he has already spent the money on a new jacket. Bert does DIY for Gail to fill in time. Gail finds the baby hard work, she had no idea it would be so difficult. Det. Sgt. Cross of the CID calls on Fred and questions him about Gee Wizz Video Enterprises as he's got financial interest in the blue movies they produce. Fred tells him all about Frankie. Mike refuses to honour Frankie's cheque for Fred. Tracy's present from Ray is a dolls' house. Dirk van der Stek turns up again and asks Deirdre out. She admires his persistence and agrees to stand Ken up in his favour. Rita tells Len that Ralph Lancaster got her the job in Stockport and Hilda has been thinking that she's been unfaithful. Len finds the news disappointing. Ken stands aside like a gentleman to let Deirdre go out with Dirk.
- Bet and Betty are amazed to discover that Fred has got a girlfriend. Rita gets a singing job in Eccles. Sonia Price thinks that Ken loves Deirdre. He assures her that Deirdre's in the past as far as he's concerned. Len agrees to Mavis going on holiday. Vera and Ida measure Mike's flat up for curtains. Rita refuses to do the early papers in Mavis's absence as she's singing - Len will have to do them. Emily puts an advert in the paper saying that she's changing her name back to Bishop. Mavis and Emily decide to go to Malta. Bet tricks Fred into telling her that his girlfriend is called Eunice Nuttall. At Mike's flat, Vera reads a letter saying Mike owes £1,300. Mike tells her that the letter is for Mr Shuttleworth, the former occupant. Mavis and Emily book for the next day for two weeks in Malta. Deirdre is jealous that Ken is taking Sonia out. Rita tells Len he has to do the papers at 6.00am. Fred tells Bet and Betty that he'll bring Eunice into the pub to stop them joking about her.
- Elsie and Wally Randle enjoyed a night out together in Macclesfield. Fred checks with the brewery that he's still entitled to his own pub if he's married. Annie is surprised that Fred is planning to marry to get a pub.
- Brian works through Easter as they need the overtime. Elsie forces herself to go into work. When Hilda insults her about throwing herself at Wally Randle, Elsie tells her to drop dead. Elsie hits the gin in her depression. Gail goes to see Elsie and is offered a part-time job at the cafe but Brian refuses to let her return to work. She doesn't feel they can cope as they owe so much money. Brian tells Gail that only a slut would return to work with a baby. Ivy advises Gail and Brian to sell up and return to living with her and Bert at No.5. Eunice shows off her engagement ring.
- Eunice doesn't care about the stripper - just that Fred took her home. Fred's bed hasn't been slept in. Bert and Ivy start bickering at each other over Vera. Eunice searches for Fred. He turns up half an hour before the service, having spent the night on floor at Sugar's house. Ivy phones Jack and tells him that Vera is with her and wants to return to him. She begs him to make the first move. Fred tells Eunice that he saw Sugar off to protect their chances of getting a pub of their own. She thinks he did the right thing. Ken finds it difficult to tell Albert that he and Deirdre won't be living with him. Fred and Eunice are married at Weatherfield Register Office. Sid Clarke - Eunice's father, Alf and Debbie Nuttall - Eunice's daughter - are witnesses. Jack dumps all of Vera's clothes in the backyard at No.5. After the wedding, the wedding party stop at three pubs before arriving at the Rovers. Annie lays on a wedding breakfast for the guests. Sid's crudeness upsets Annie. Fred and Eunice leave for Rhyl. Albert is looking forward to having a child around the house. He is upset when Ken tells him that they won't be living with him.
- Ivy is upset that the residents know Vera has been entertaining a man in her house. Albert feels alone with his memories. Jack doesn't care if Vera wants to return to him or not. Vera thinks that Jack will beg her to return and is stunned when he tells her that if she doesn't give Harry up and return home he'll change the locks and never take her back. As a result she returns home. Colin Jackson mends the Tilsleys' stereo for them. Gail expresses her thanks to him. Beattie Pearson contacts Albert, saying that she's going to visit him. Colin tells Gail that she needs company in the evenings whilst Brian is working.
- Beattie Pearson arrives. She congratulates Ken on his engagement but doesn't think much of Deirdre as she's divorced. The Gees return from honeymoon. Eunice starts bossing Fred around and makes herself at home in the Rovers. Beattie looks through Albert's Post Office account. Albert complains to her that she hasn't seen him for six months. The Jacksons and Tilsleys have a picnic. Colin flirts with Gail but Brian thinks he's harmless. Albert accuses Beattie of wanting something. She tells him she wants to know what arrangements Ken has made for him. Eunice starts to take over the Rovers and Annie doesn't like it. Beattie accuses Ken of abandoning Albert. He suggests she takes him in but she says she hasn't the room. Knowing Brian is at work, Colin calls on Gail. He makes a pass at her, telling her he fancies her. She says she doesn't fancy him and slaps his face when he comes on strong.
- Fred stays with Eunice at Sid's flat. Susan considers getting a hotel holiday job. Blanche organises a hen party for Deirdre. Fred works at the Rovers under sufferance. Betty advises him to be gracious and let Annie feel obligated to him. Mavis worries about posing for Maurice Dodds. Fred gives the Rover a special polish to please Annie. The effect is spoilt when Annie sees him talking to Eunice in the car. She takes the car keys off Fred causing him to tell her that he's finished. She warns him that if he doesn't serve notice she will black him at the brewery. Eunice tells Fred to pander to Annie in order to get a good reference from her. Ken has his stag night at the Rovers. Eddie entertains on his accordion. Maurice guesses that Mavis doesn't want to pose. She feels that she's letting him down and is upset when he says goodbye to her. Hilda does her Carmen Miranda impersonation at Deirdre's hen night. Mike and Ken get drunk together on the stag night. Annie writes to Frank Pritchard asking him to start work in a week.
- Bert is upset as Ivy falls out with Vera over the driver's job. Hilda forces Stan to go for the driving job by threatening to withhold his food. John worries about his mother's operation. Eddie starts breeding rabbits. Ivy and Vera row over who deserves the driving job. Mike interviews Bert, Jack and Stan. Hilda refuses to let Eddie breed rabbits to be eaten. John's mother's operation goes well. Mike gives the driver's job to Bernard Clough, Ida's son. He tells Ivy that Bert didn't get the job as they'd have wanted to take their holidays together. He didn't give Stan the job as a favour to him and if he gave the job to Jack, he'd get even less work out of Vera. Rita is upset that Mrs Spencer will soon be out of hospital.
- The Tilsleys try to tell Audrey that she's not welcome, she tells them that she's planning to move out. Frankie motors up to see Mike with his girlfriend Sylvie Hicks. Mike is amazed that he is so affluent. Elsie takes Audrey in for a few days, sympathetic with her cause. Mike is amazed when Sylvie turns out to be a glamorous twenty-year old. Tony Ditchburn turns up at the Tilsleys' house looking for Audrey. Brian tells him to keep his fists to himself. Fred and Alf are sick to discover business is booming for Frankie. Sylvie makes Frankie feel good. At the filling station Brian helps a girl, Michelle Fenton, fill her car with petrol. Whilst she keeps him occupied Ronnie Burgess goes through the till. Brian sees him and tries to stop him. Ronnie threatens him with a screwdriver but Brian overpowers him and smashes him into a wall. The girl escapes and Brian calls the police.
- Ronnie Burgess is taken to hospital. Brian has to make a statement. Audrey fancies a day shopping with Elsie, so she phones Mike and tells him that Elsie is ill and won't be in work. Ivy hears from the factory girls that Brian has been involved in a fight and she fears he's been hurt. She is relieved to find he's alright. Alf wants to take a holiday but doesn't want to leave the shop as Deirdre is only part-time now. Gail tells Tony Ditchburn where Audrey is staying, knowing that Audrey wants him back. He calls at No.11. Elsie tells him that he's got a cheek turning up after he's hit Audrey. Mike fears Frankie will marry Sylvie Hicks. Audrey is stunned when Tony tells her that he doesn't want her, and that's why he threw her out. The only thing he wants is his car back. She is furious and throws the keys at him. Frankie buys Sylvie a mink. Mike tells him to be careful that Sylvie doesn't spend all his money. Frankie doesn't care; he's having a good time. Audrey looks for a job. Alf asks her to run the shop for him whilst he holidays. She accepts. Brian is proclaimed a hero but discovers that Ronnie is critical in hospital and is still unconscious.
- Gail fears that Brian will be sent to prison. Mike makes his dislike of Sylvie Hicks show. Audrey fails to take the shop as a priority and makes her hours very flexible. Stan receives a letter from Hilda wanting to buy the round for him. He is appalled. Eddie finds the situation hysterical. Stan tells Hilda that it is his round; he doesn't want to spend another winter cleaning windows. She tells him she doesn't like her life either. Ivy grows hysterical at the news that Brian has been arrested. Frankie decides to throw a party at Mike's flat. Audrey closes the shop to be with Gail when she hears of Brian's arrest. Mike is annoyed as Frankie's party takes over his flat. He tells Sylvie that she's a gold-digger. Bert gets a summons to appear in court. Ivy doesn't understand where they've gone wrong as a family.
- Ivy is worried when Mike tells her to call for voluntary redundancies as she can't accept last in first out. Audrey closes the shop to style Mavis's hair. The factory girls raise £28 towards Brian's solicitor. Ivy assures the girls that Mike is in a bad way but Vera doesn't think things are that bad and demands a three-day week. The rest of the girls back her. Ivy is forced to join the vote. Brian tells Ron Sykes he risked his life for him and he feels that he owes him some support. Fred goes to Audrey to have his hair cut. Mike can't believe the girls want a three-day week. They assure him that they want to work to make the business a success and ask him to take a gamble on them. He agrees to give it whirl. Eunice finds Fred in the shop's back room. She marches him out and tells Audrey to keep her hands off her husband. Mike is delighted that the girls fell for his trap and opted for the three-day week he always wanted. Bert can't believe the Tilsleys' luck now Ivy is on a three-day week. Ron finds a solicitor for Brian and tells him that he'll pay his fees.
- Ivy feels that Bert should tell Longshaw's Foundry that he has to attend a funeral but Bert wants to tell the truth. Annie calls the police when Alec Hobson disappears with her teasmade and toaster, but she feels awful when Alec returns with the repaired items and has to cancel her complaint. Ivy is furious that Bert is going to risk his job by telling the truth about the court case. Gordon tells Betty that she can bring Annie to the wedding, Betty tells him she will if Caroline agrees. Bert tells Mr. Swift, the works manager at Longshaw's, about his court case. He tells him that if they'd known about the case they wouldn't have employed him. Caroline tells Betty she must bring Annie. She snootily tells Gordon she's surprised the Rovers aren't bringing a charabanc. Longshaws admire Bert's honesty and keep him on. Gordon and Caroline return to London. Betty worries that he's making a mistake marrying Caroline.
- Ivy and the girls decide not to speak to Elsie and they bully a new starter, Kathy Barrett, into joining them. Elsie is amused that the girls are playing childish games. She carries on talking as usual, telling them about her date with Wilf and singing at the top of her voice, driving the other women mad. Eddie finds out for Fred that he can claim on Annie's insurance. Mike is furious to discover that Elsie has been sent to Coventry and he tells the girls it has to stop but they refuse. Elsie tells Mike she doesn't care - she can cope. Annie returns home to find Fred in bed and Eddie working as pot man. Fred tells her that the cellar steps are in bad repair and he could sue. Annie determines to find out if he's really ill or not, she calls in the rugby club's back specialist. Bet tells Fred that Annie has arranged for him to have a Swedish massage. Wilf refuses to let Elsie carry the blame for his mistake and says that he'll see Webster about getting the order back.
- Sharon convinces Len she wasn't getting up to anything at the party. He tells her that he thinks Steve Dunthorne is too old for her. Hilda doesn't like Eddie staying out late at night with Marion. Eddie thinks he's in love. Gail is upset that Brian preferred to be in Cairo than with her. She gets upset when Ivy goes on about how wonderful Brian is and Gail tells her about Brian living it up in Cairo. Eddie tells Hilda that his relationship is suffering as he hasn't got a place to court Marion. She tells him that he can court at No.13. Len doesn't trust Steve and is amazed when Sharon considers going on the pill. She asks Len to trust her; she knows what Steve wants from her. Hilda decides she wants to get to know Marion better and invites her for Sunday tea. Eddie is horrified.
- Betty is in Weatherfield General. Bet rushes to her side. Fred is furious that she was a victim. Ivy has told Brian that Gail is back at work. He rings Gail and rows with her. Betty has a broken arm and a battered face. She tried to fight the muggers for her handbag but they kicked her. Eddie is furious to discover Stan didn't pass on Marion's message and she thinks he stood her up. Deirdre visits Betty in hospital and is sickened when Ken still refuses to tell the police about Raymond Attwood. Eddie lays into Stan for ruining his chances with Marion. Marion forgives him. Gail refuses to hold the fort at the cafe alone and threatens to walk out when she does. Deirdre tells the police about Attwood's new-found wealth. Eddie tells Marion he has been in prison. She tells him it makes no difference to her. He builds up enough courage to suggest they get engaged. She agrees.
- The Faircloughs love having Sharon back. Sharon refuses to return to the Boltons - her former foster family. Ken wants to spend the bank holiday reading but the rest of the family demand a day out. Sharon begs Don Worthington to let her stay with the Faircloughs; the Boltons are too posh for her and she feels out of place there. Worthington feels that she needs a long-term home. Eddie makes a book on the date of the royal birth. Bet's landlord tells her to vacate her flat whilst he has the roof repaired. The Barlows have a peaceful picnic. Len and Rita decide to apply to have Sharon permanently. Bet asks Alf to rent her the corner shop flat for a couple of weeks but he refuses. Ken tells Deirdre that he would like another child. They decide to try for one.
- Fred warns Annie that the Rover won't pass its MOT. Bet begs Alf to take her in. The Faircloughs tell Don Worthington that they'd like to foster Sharon long-term. Don isn't convinced it would be in Sharon's best interests to be with them. He accuses Sharon of forcing the Faircloughs to take her in and asks her to reconsider. Bet wins Alf round with emotional blackmail however, he refuses to charge her rent as she won't be staying for long. Len tells Sharon that they really want her to stay. Ken is amazed when Albert encourages him to have another child. Don doesn't want the Faircloughs to have Sharon long-term as he doesn't feel they're up to it. Rita tells him that Sharon has brought their parental feelings up and they all want to be together. Bet moves into the shop flat. Worthington agrees to let Sharon stay with the Faircloughs as she's nearly eighteen. He tells them all that they can never go back on the decision.
- Rita and Sharon decide they want No.7 and set about persuading Len. Ivy persuades Emily to cover up for Cleopatra spilling the coffee but she is forced to show Mike a coffee-stained order sheet and tells him about Cleopatra.
- Gail decides to give up work to look after Nicky as she realises that it was her fault in the first place. Alma finds Ken attractive. Gail gives in her notice at the cafe but helps out with the lunchtime rush. Hilda demands that her front door is finished. When Eddie tells her the paint came from the tip, she demands the house be totally repainted in purple. Bet plans a dinner party for Elsie and Rita and gets Alf to do all the cooking whilst she's working. Les Charlton asks Gail out for a drink but she says that she'll see him around. Elsie tells Marion that she's going to see Linda for a couple of days and asks her to tell everyone she's ill. Gail decides to keep working part-time.
- Ivy is adamant that she's missed Brian more than Gail has. Chalkie Whitely looks at No.7 with a view to buying it. Gail is upset that Ivy has taken the day off to welcome Brian home as she wanted to be alone with him.
- Brian tells Gail that he doesn't like her working amongst all the lorry drivers at the cafe. Rita tells Chalkie that he could buy No.9 for cheaper than £14,000. He's interested in it for £10,500. Brian gets angry when he overhears pub-talk that Gail has been going out with lorry drivers. Chalkie looks round No.9 and likes it. He tells Rita that he'll buy it for £10,000. Rita worries what Len will say. Mike tells Maggie that he wants to get married. Les Charlton calls on Gail and is confused by Brian's presence. Brian wants to know who he is. Brian goes for him and throws him out, upsetting Gail who swears he's just a friend. Brian accuses Gail of having an affair with Les and tells her that he was unfaithful as well, with a nurse. She slaps his face.
- Brian gives a body repair job to Frank Skinner. Mr. Wainwright, manager of the Luxy Cinema is furious that Alf has banned his film. He is interested to discover that he has a blonde barmaid living with him. Mrs. Chadwick arrives and tells Fred that the Rover broke down in Wigan. Fred gets Brian to run him over to fetch it back. Wainwright gets the Gazette to call at the shop and in Alf's absence they interview Bet. She tells them how Alf took her in, despite the neighbours' gossip, and she doesn't pay rent. Brian manages to repair the Rover for Fred. Ron Sykes telephones and tells Brian that Skinner is not to be trusted. Annie decides to stay with Olive Taylor-Brown for another day. Marion's boyfriend Phil Moss turns up looking for her.
- Mike refuses to let Maggie walk out of his life with his child. Marion returns to No.11. Eddie is delighted to see her. Mike tells Deirdre that pregnant Maggie has left him. His story upsets her. Marion tells Elsie she went to live with Phil Moss but found she no longer loved him. An important cheque is sent to Len at No.9. Chalkie gives it to Len a week later. Len is furious and shouts at him. Chalkie tells them that he won't forward any letters in future. Eddie fears that Marion doesn't want to see him again. Mike hears people talking about Maggie leaving him and sacks Hilda, even though she swears she hasn't told anyone. Marion feels that Eddie doesn't want to see her any more.
- Chalkie gets frustrated when Craig keeps skiving off school. He refuses to pass on letters for Len. Hilda is upset that Mike has sacked her. She lays into Mike, telling him that she's served him well. He tells her that the job is still hers. Chalkie's boiler goes wrong. He accuses Len of not looking after it and threatens to send him the repair bill. Len tells him that No.9 is nothing to do with him so Chalkie writes "not known at this address" on Len's letters. Elsie and Hilda decide to get Eddie and Marion back together. They set up a meeting between them. Len hears Wilshaw's have sent him a tender form and he has now lost the job as he hasn't replied. Eddie and Marion meet and realise Hilda and Elsie have been plotting. Marion tells Eddie that he's the only man she wants. Len accuses Chalkie of keeping his post. Eddie gives Marion her ring back. Mike employs a time and motion study man, Eric Broadhurst, but he tells Ivy not to tell the girls.
- Ken offers Mr. Wadsworth £21,500 for his house. Albert tells the Barlows that he will move with them. Hilda counts on getting £10,000 for the shop and tells Annie that she's definitely leaving. Annie has the Rovers cleaned from top to bottom and buys flowers to arrange around the bar before the brewery's inspection. Fred dresses up to impress Sarah Ridley but Annie asks him to take a day's holiday so that he won't show her up. Hilda cleans the Rovers for the last time and tells Annie she's glad to leave. Annie tells her that she had intended to give her an extra 25p an hour so Hilda agrees to stay on. Sarah Ridley and George Newton call at the Rovers. They drink in the bar to see how trade is. Annie greets them with surprise. Hilda's solicitor tells her that Archie Crabtree had debts and her inheritance will only be about £2,000. She is disappointed. Ken agrees to buy the Buxton Close house for £21,750. Deirdre is thrilled. George Newton chats Elsie up and tells her that she'd be an ideal landlady. Fred offers to take Sarah out but she snubs him. Sarah advises Annie to stick to her spit and sawdust trade and to lose the flowers on the bar. The Barlows enthuse about the move but Albert tells them he realises that he can't leave No.1 as it's his home. He's sorry.
- Alf warns Bet that her relationship with Des Foster will end in tears - hers. Ivy talks to Bert whilst he's in a coma. He comes round to see her at his bedside. Phyllis asks Chalkie to pay her electricity bill. He gives her £30. When she discovers that he's going to Australia she calls him a monster for not taking her with him. She begs him to take her but he refuses. Alf is forced to cover up for Des when Edith Foster telephones as Des is with Bet.
- The Duckworths finally move into Number 9. Gail tries to persuade Brian not to sell the garage. Annie complains about the noise of the revellers at the Graffiti Club.
- Gail is annoyed that Brian didn't discuss his plans with her before putting the garage up for sale and Dennis Lawton looks over it. Fred has a cut forehead. Hilda receives a cheque for £1,583 from her solicitor for the proceeds from the sale of Archie's chip shop. Ivy is stunned to hear that Brian is selling the garage. She thinks that it's Gail's idea and rows with her. Pamela Mitchell is shocked to discover Ken has lost his job because of her article. She refuses to let Ken write more articles for the paper. Ken finishes at the community centre. Hilda opens a bank account for the first time and gets a cheque book. She books an expensive restaurant for a meal to celebrate.
- Pamela Mitchell tells the Barlows that she's leaving the Weatherfield Recorder and moving to Nottingham. Dennis Lawton offers Brian a price £2,000 lower than the asking price for the garage. Brian thinks it over.
- Gail tells Brian she can face living with Ivy if it means that they keep the garage on. Brian tells Dennis Lawton that the garage is no longer for sale. Ken tells Bob Statham he's interested in buying a third share of the Weatherfield Recorder. After discovering there's nothing but grotty flats around to rent, the Tilsleys decide to move in with Ivy. Rita phones Victor and finds out that Mrs Pendlebury is his sister-in-law. Mavis is relieved. Ivy promises to allow the Tilsleys their freedom if they move in with her. She is delighted when they agree. Marion tells Eddie that she is pregnant. He is stunned but tells her that he's thrilled.
- Marion and Eddie share their wedding news with Elsie and Hilda. Emily's team of volunteers driver her to distraction. The Tilsleys secure an offer on the house.
- Marion and Eddie share their baby news with their landladies. Emily's Autumn Fayre has residents flocking to the centre. Gail is sad at having to pack up her home.
- Vera and Terry nag Jack to cough up his housekeeping money. Marion warns Mike of a potentially awkward encounter. Brian tests Kevin's ability as a mechanic.
- Eddie and Marion's reception takes place at the Rovers. Mike's mood is soured by the presence of Maggie with his son. The guests attempt to sabotage the newlyweds' wedding night.
- The residents hear of Elsie's moonlight flit. Fred sets about selling the Rover as he can't afford to run it. The Tilsleys persuade Ivy to have a night out at bingo. Fred is upset when no one wants to buy the Rover. Brian offers him £60 for scrap. The insurance on the Rover is worth more than the car. Hilda arranges to take a photograph of the offending pavement to take to the Town Hall. Ken agrees to run a piece on Stan's toe. At bingo, Ivy runs into newly-widowed Arthur Whittaker. Hilda refuses to allow Stan out of the house until she gets compensation. Ivy wins £20 at bingo. Arthur walks her home so she isn't mugged. Jack agrees to "steal" the Rover so Fred can claim on the insurance. Jack's cut will be 25% of the £600. Fred agrees.
- Percy prepares for the dance. He is horrified to discover the DJ named Barry Pollard calls himself 'Kaiser Bill'. Vera calls Henry Wakefield a "scab", causing him to give his notice in. Mike sacks him so that he can go onto the dole and gives him an extra week's wages. Christine Millward tells Mike that he has to realise their relationship is purely professional. Henry gets drunk before taking Hilda to the dance. Alf takes Rita to the dance, Terry takes Andrea. Gail is annoyed when Brian has to work and she has to go to the dance alone. Curly gets together with Shirley and takes her home. Henry snatches the microphone and tells the dancers that they're a miserable lot. He walks out. Hilda finds that he's not at home but has left his key. Percy dodges Phyllis all night. She grabs him for the ladies' excuse me. Rita agrees to go dancing with Alf again.
- Betty worries that Bet is getting like Annie Walker, especially when she calls her "Elizabeth". As Brian is working, Gail leaves Nicky with neighbour Connie so she can work. Bet is desperate to impress the Lady Victuallers. Ivy is surprised to find Connie looking after Nicky. Bet is embarrassed as the Lady Victuallers eye up the men in the Rovers. Brian is furious as Gail works late and there's no tea for him. Ivy goes out with George. Stella Rigby challenges Bet to enter the "Brainiest Pub" contest. When Brian tells Gail that she should be at home with Nicky she tells him that she hasn't got a home.
- Ivy is disgusted at Brian's behaviour, but he maintains that he is a single man. Bet worries that the Rovers team will lose the quiz. Terry and Curly buy the car from Jack.
- Terry hires Jack's car for £5 to move some furniture for money. Gail feels in the way of Audrey's love-life. She thinks that Brian doesn't care as he doesn't get in contact with her. Terry and Curly plan to go into the removal business. Terry plans to buy Jack's car, do it up and sell it to buy a van. Wilf Starkey turns himself into a walking sports manual for the "Brainiest Pub" contest but the brewery says he can't be on the team as he works for them. Terry and Curly are paid £10 for the removal. The car breaks down on the way. Percy replaces Wilf on the team. Wilf accuses him of reporting him to the brewery. Gail and Nicky move into a bedsit. Ivy is angry that Brian hasn't seen Gail. He agrees to see her to stop Ivy's nagging. Terry offers Jack £500 for the car. Brian arrives at Audrey's flat to find Gail has left, thinking that their marriage is over.
- Brian contacts Gail on her birthday and tells her that he wants to see Nicky. He accuses her of having another man and refuses to chase after her. Cliff Farmer tells Bet that the Rovers have been drawn against the White Swan, Stella Rigby's pub. Brian plans to enjoy his freedom. Terry tries to show Jack that the car is a deathtrap to knock him down on the price but Jack tells him it's too dangerous to sell to him. Ivy asks Gail to come home before the rift gets too big. Jack gets £525 off Terry for the car. Audrey discovers Gail and Nicky are festering in a bedsit and she rows with Brian. Jack discovers Terry is using the car for removals.
- Brian spends the night at the garage. Jack gets a load of silver lurex off a customer. Ivy rows with Brian and makes him realise that he has to see Gail. Terry asks Kevin to fix the car for a part share in it. Jack gives Vera the material for an anniversary present. She gives it to Connie to have a dress made up. Brian tells Gail that he'll buy a house if that's what she wants. She is upset at his manner and refuses a reconciliation.
- Brian sleeps at the YMCA. Jack tells Harry that Vera's dress material came from a customer. Kevin agrees to repair the car for a part share in it. Ivy tells Gail that she's shaken Brian up and that she admires her for that. Vera gives Connie a pattern for the dress. Brian apologises to Gail and begs her to help him to say the right thing. He tells her that he wants his family back. She tells him that's all he ever needed to say. Ivy agrees to go out regularly with George. Gail tells Brian they can rent a place, so long as they're on their own. They are reconciled.
- Ken and Deirdre worry about the outcome of the adoption assessment. Kevin begs Hilda to give Sally a chance. Rita mediates between Jenny and Alan.
