- Kirk uses a copy of a key to John's apartment made without John's knowledge to get ready for a surprise birthday party. In route to the apartment he picks up a woman to impress with apartment as his, but the woman robs John's apartment.
- John skips the group meeting persuaded that he has become too dependent on it by the coach who wants him to join a poker game. In John's absence, the group debates whether the group is an addictive force curbing their progress.
- Kate tries to convince Alejandro that they have no future, but an expensive ring and thoughts of his wealth persuade her otherwise. Kirk gets John a cheap stand-by ticket to Hawaii and John is continually bumped during his vacation.
- Kate is excited about a man to which Mary Beth introduced because of his boyish charm until Kate realizes the man is just immature. Kirk falls in love with a strident woman from a smoke quitters group while John dates his female dentist.
- Louise starts dating her IRS audit agent but is put off by his Indecisiveness. Wendy's call to John worries Janet that John is still attached to Wendy. Jackie asks a list of recent lovers from Kirk of which there are none.
- Jackie breaks up with Kirk because he lied when he put a person on his list. Janet breaks up with John because Wendy is having John's baby. Everyone except Ralph of 1-2-1 club is back in the pathetic state in which they started there.
- Mary Beth decides to quit her job because she doesn't feel like her boss respects her. She then gets a job writing on a soap opera. She then reads the things she wrote at the group meeting and it's very provocative. Louise then says she has to go home to take care of a leaky faucet and needs to find someone to fix it and the guys suggest Ben. So Mary gives her a piece of paper from what she's been reciting to her to write her address so that they could give it to Ben. Later they ask her how she got the job. She says she gave the show some of them things she wrote and they liked and she also mentions that her father has a connection to the show which makes her wonder that her father got her the job. Later they give Ben Louise's address and looks at the back and reads the thing Mary Beth wrote and he thinks Louise wants him so he goes to her apartment with flowers and wine.
- Ralph falls for a married woman. John and Kirk compete to tell only the truth.
- A restaurant reviewer is visiting Kate's Place and she asks the gang to fill up the empty restaurant. John considers filing bankruptcy to help pay his bills but has nightmares.
- John must choose between friendship and health when his doctor tells him that Kirk is the cause of his stomach pain.
- Kirk forms a doo wop group with Louise, Kate and Mrs. Philbert to win money, but the women want Ralph as lead after he sings. John is in a funk because a college professor he admires trashes his poetry but then publishes them as his own.
- When the center is to be closed because of lack of funds. Everyone makes plans and they're worried about Louise, because the group is her baby but when she shows up, she tells everyone she's asked a friend to help her. While she doesn't give them much details. Later a friend of hers shows up to support her and she lets it slip that she knows Louise because they were both confined to a psychiatric facility. Kate then tells everyone that Louise suffered a breakdown after marriage ended. And they can't help but see how similar what happened to her back then is similar to the situation with the center. They think Louise is off her rocker but John wants to give her the benefit of the doubt till he learns who is giving her the money. So they decide to hold an intervention for her but the person who is giving her the money shows up.
- John and Kirt join the writing staff of Mary Beth's soap opera because Kirt's brain thinks like a soap opera.
- Angry at his uncaring father, Red's troubled teenage nephew Danny visits her and asks to stay with her. The support group offers help, so he stays with some of them. However, he connects only with Kirk, whose bad influence worries Red.
- Mrs. Philbert decides to attend her high school reunion, but Tom won't be able to take her. John tries helping out but old high school rivalries make John wish he had stayed at home.
- A woman who just broke up with her husband joins the group. She tells them that they broke up because she found out he's a cross dresser. She tells them that they have an amicable relationship, that they go out together though he's in drag. And when people ask what they are they say they're sisters. And that they're meeting at the bar near the center after the meeting. John who wasn't able to attend goes to the bar and meets with a woman named Margo who says she's there to meet her sister who's at a support group at the center.
- Kate goes into the restaurant business only to find her business partner brings Kirt into the business. John plans a romantic skiing weekend but his credit cards are maxed out.
- Louise informs the group that her family which consists of her parents and sister are coming to see her and her baby. But she didn't tell them that she's a single mother and they are coming to see her husband. So she asks if one of them could pretend to be her husband. They refuse. But later each of the guys shows up and they each meet one of her family and the one who meets who comes thinks that he is Louise's husband. So she tries to keep them apart.
- The support group prepares a birthday party for Kirk only to realize that he might be lying to them about the day of his birth. Kirk decides to come clean when his secret wife from India shows up. Or does he?
- John's work friend Ken comes to him about his failing marriage. John mistakenly lets slip some of Ken's lies to his wife. John's date falls through. Everything is going wrong. At a party, Louise sets John up with Liz.
- Kate dates a man she finds attractive, but he decides to move on and not see her again. She finds out why and then understands. He has a terminal illness and he wants to see the world during his remaining days.
- Motivated by the group's discussion of the legal complications of John's donation for Wendy, Ralph. Kirk and John break into the sperm bank to clandestinely retrieve the sample.
- Ralph replaces Kirk for the group in the contest. Denise finds that her husband's long leave from his work is not the dream she thought. John is torn what to do about his professor's plagiarism but assists him to write again.
- John accompanies Kate to her aunt's funeral as a calming influence for Kate's hard feelings about her ex-husband who had taken control of the funeral and her family. Then Kate is blamed for an accident John causes for the ex-husband.
- Kate is unjustifiably cautious of her new relationship with a cop whom she met as he was investigating a robbery of the group. John takes extreme lengths to cajole an elderly neighbor woman in hopes of acquiring her superior apartment.
- A known actress with a sex addiction joins the group requesting anonymity. When a picture of her kissing John in a restaurant with a story about her secret appears in a tabloid, the future of the group is threatened by mistrust.
- The betrayal of the actress' trust and its negative effect on John's career are revealed to actually be a plan for publicity on the part of the actress herself.

- A charming newcomer to the group woos both Kate and Louise both of whom are unaware the man is a serial bigamist.
- John's throwing Kate's fiancée a bachelor party. He tells Kirk to pay him back what he owes him so he can pay for the party. They go to the ATM and something goes wrong and the machine throws out a lot of cash, Kirk decides to get the money, while John decides not to. But at the party which is attended by cops, the news reports what happened at the ATM and surveillance video shows John and he tries to explain that he didn't take the money. The cops give him time to get the money back from Kirk and turn it over. So John "tells" Kirk to give him the money. Kate is at her own party and is dreading her life with her future husband.
- John brings Gloria to the group. It's six months since her husband died. Kirk's callousness actually helps and they start going out. Surprisingly, Gloria has Kirk all bound up.
- Kate tells the group her sister is coming for a visit and she tells them that she always makes a play for every guy she's with. And when they tell Kate she's being paranoid, she decides to prove by introducing Kirk as her beau and to see if she makes a move. And when she doesn't, John takes her home with him. And when he talks about how he and Kate went out once, she comes on to him.
- The support group arranges for Ricky to play a concert in a small venue to boost his sagging morale over a faded career but Ricky is mortified to be outclassed when Freddie and the Dreamers perform.
- Pregnant Louise is away getting some bed rest. Ralph is afraid to go to a dance and too shy to meet Barbara, a teacher at the community center.
- John attends a different divorce support group to help a friend and enjoys the fun atmosphere of the new group.
- A divorce lawyer joins the group as a new member. He convinces Kate and John to sue their exes who are exploiting them. Hyped by this, John even decides to help his students cheat on a test in order to win the teacher of the year award.
- Kirk is reluctant to accept the apology of his priest brother who has come to the community center to make amends for sleeping with Kirk's fiancée years ago. Kirk later has a change of heart and seeks John's help to heal the rift.
- Wendy's suggestion that she and John have a baby causes everyone to think that she wants to reconcile with John.
- John is troubled to learn his father had an affair when John was young. Kirk hears of this and tries to convince John they are brothers so he can move in since he has lost his apartment.

- John clashes with his ex-wife over visitation issues with their son Matthew. To maximize the time they have, John takes him to a cabin in the woods. When an epic snowfall traps them in, it looks as though he doesn't plan to return him.
- John comes home to find out his wife left him. After a few days, his sister suggests he go to a meeting of a support group for the widowed, divorced, and single.
- Kirk arranges for John to accompany him on a double without telling John that they are substituting for male escorts which discovery mortifies John because he has felt a genuine connection with his date.
- Kate is volunteering for Eleanor Guthrie running for congress. Louise, John, and Ralph join her. Kirk invites himself to the party.

- Kirk and Denise start a catering business and enlist the services of the group members who show at John's for food preparation while John is spending the weekend with his son who is having anxiety about his role after Wendy has the baby.
- Louise reluctantly agrees to let John watch her baby, so Kate and Mary Beth can treat her for her birthday. John along with Kirk and Ralph go to get Louise a baby portrait at a photo study where the baby is switched.
- John dates a woman whose daughter thinks her mother's dates are grown-up dweebs.
- John has big date planned for him and girlfriend which includes watching a show. But she's busy and John already got the tickets. A girl who just had her own break up joins the group. John asks her if she would like to accompany him to the show. And she says yes. But when John's girlfriend is free to join him, he lies to the other girl to get out of going with her. When she finds out John lied, she sues him for the cost she put in to get ready for their date.
- Suffering from an irritated stomach and under doctor's order to avoid stress, John ends friendship with Kirk after concocts another imposing scheme but John is bored with his other friends and Kirk tries to force Kate to be his friend.
- Ben is not happy that Louise wants to keep their relationship a secret. Louise is not happy that the group doesn't want to share. Ben talks to John about his relationship with an older woman not mentioning it's Louise. John tells him to go ask someone else. He talks to Annie about it but she misconstrues it as him asking her out which she accepts. Later at the meeting Louise locks everyone in until they open up. But it's at the meeting that Kate reveals what happened between her and John a few years ago which leads to more revelations. And when Annie mentions that Ben asked her out, Louise is not happy and when John mentions he told Ben to do that Louise has a meltdown of her own.
- Ralph's wife Blomlika comes back to town to renew their marriage.
- John's former best friend Mike gets dumped by John's ex-wife Wendy. Mike gets invited to the group by Louise while pretending to be Bill.
- Usually perky Mary Beth suffers a bout of depression when, expecting a promotion, she is fired from her writing job. Kirk convinces an aspiring actress he is a director and blackmails John to assist him in the charade.
- John reconnects with a female author who is in town for a book signing and with whom he had an awkward youthful romance which ended due to his lack of spontaneity and her impetuousness.
- Kirk sublets an apartment from a guy who left town in a huff. He thinks he has it made, till he discovers a woman living in the apartment. She says her name is Annie and she lives with her boyfriend. Kirk claims that her boyfriend sublet the apartment to him. That's when she realizes that her boyfriend left. She agrees to let Kirk stay provided he keeps his distance. But Kirk finds it difficult to do so. And Annie decides to join the group.
- After taking out a blind date on a romantic evening, the woman decides to start a new life with John much to his dismay.
- After presenting on publishing for career day, a former admiring student of John's offers John a job with a tempting salary.
- Despite the good salary and rewards of being an editor for a publisher, John has misgivings about his new job because his former admiring female student who hired him expects romantic reciprocation.
- John's ex-wife Wendy wants him to lie about their divorce to get their son Matthew into a Catholic school.
- John's married friend Gary has his eye on Kate. He joins the group pretending to be a widower.
- John reconnects with old flame Yvonne but the 30 years separation has left her an older grandmother. The memories don't match the reality.
- John learns that Mike, the guy his wife left him for is having an affair. He feels like a big man and lets Mike know he knows. But Mike knows he's not going to tell his ex because he still cares about her. And John feels like a wimp.
- During Kirk's attempt to seduce newcomer to the group Mary Beth, Mary Beth becomes the aggressor, but Kirk is unable to perform. Kirk then develops anxiety about rejoining the group for fear that Mary Beth will reveal his impotence.
- Ralph sells self-help, "how to be successful books" which brings good fortune to everyone who reads it. John is skeptical of its worth and has to decide whether to read it or not.
- The support group invests in a speculative estate deal offered by Kirk's self-proclaimed reformed friend.
- At the meeting John is going on and on about how someone at his school is using her position to further her career and doesn't care about the students. And Mary Beth is thinking of how she can use this for her writing. And she dreams up situations with members of the group in them. And everyone there is annoyed that she's doing that.
- Louise vexed that the members of John's long enduring therapy group have failed to progress to long term relationships directs a creative visualization exercise that only deepens the group's neuroses.
- Kate has idealized remembrances of her relationships with group members at a parting celebration as the group plans her wedding at John's, while Kirk is particularly obnoxious. Wendy's prenatal demands on John are increasingly intrusive.
- Kirk invites John to accompany him on a ski trip for two that Kirk has won. John encounters a man with whom he connects and spends all his time on the trip with that man while ignoring Kirk.
- When Louise's stomach begins to expand, the group is curious who the father is and why he isn't helping her. She tells them that he doesn't yet know. She decides to tell him and he proposes. But she is not sure she wants to marry him.
- In part 2 Kirk tries to stop Kates wedding plans for a 'good reason. Meanwhile John's ex shows up at the wedding pregnant with john's baby.
- John has an opportunity to go study in Paris for a year. All he has to do is get the headmaster at his school to approve his leave of absence. And to get it, he does all sorts of stuff for man. Right now he is taking care of his parrot. When he has Kirk and Ben over, Kirk says something derogatory about the man and the parrot repeats it. Mary Beth invites the girls to her place and when Annie arrives, she's a wreck. She reveals that her ex is back in town and she's still not over him. So they tell her to call and ask him over so she can get closure.
- The group decides to go to the grocery to meet someone. While there Kirk runs into his ex-wife. The gang wants to spy on them but Louise tells them to go. But she stays and learns why Kirk's wife left him. Later at the meeting, before Kirk arrives, Louise tells them that Kirk's wife left him for another woman. And when they let it slip that they know, Kirk bolts out. John goes to see him and Kirk doesn't want to go out because he thinks that his wife left him because he wasn't man enough for her. John tells him he should go talk to her. Kirk at first doesn't want to do it but he later changes his mind.
- John's uncle Jack passes away. John promised his uncle that he'd look after aunt Emma (Jack's wife) if he died. So Emma comes to stay with John and makes life miserable for John by laying guilt trip after guilt trip on him. She is ungrateful and nothing John or anyone for that matter does is good enough. One day she comes (uninvited) to the One Two One group and makes life hell for all the members. They want her gone from the group and tell John to tell Emma as much. John wants her gone also, but can't tell her because of his promise to his uncle. He finally decides enough is enough and goes to tell Emma. How does she react?
- Annie's cousin, who just went through a bad break-up, visits her and stays with her. But she spends a lot of time with Kirk. Annie tells him to keep his distance or else. And he does, but when he and her cousin are alone she comes on to him and they are caught by Annie and her cousin's father. Later, Kirk goes to John saying that Annie's cousin's family wants him to do the right thing, which of course he doesn't want to do. John throws him out. And later John gets a video tape from Kirk saying he's left with no other choice but to end it all. So they all gather at a memorial for him, but someone is watching from the shadows.
- John is looking forward to spending Christmas in his apartment with his young son, only to find out at the last minute that the boy is going to Disneyland instead. So John winds up spending Christmas in his apartment with his elderly neighbor, Mrs. Lumenski.
- Each member of the group reminisces about mostly cringe worthy attempts at romance which closely followed their breakups.
- John hires a Santa Claus for a Christmas party at the day-care center.
- John doesn't like Kate going out with his father.
- The group has a party. Ralph is excited but doesn't show up. John and Kate are concerned. They find Ralph at home crying over the Curse of Tutankhamun.
- Andrew Garberg comes to John claiming to be his son.
- John's ex-wife Wendy wants him to stop having his weekend visits with their despondent son Matthew.
- The group leaves John alone at a bar and he's approach by 23 year old hairdresser Karen. They met before but he can't remember her. She may be too much for him but that's the least of it.
