- Marie successfully helps Helene escape from the school, but raises the alarm in the process. Hortense visits the school, on behalf of Daniel, to deliver food and clothes for Sarah. The Jewish prisoners are transported by train to Paris.

Lucienne struggles to restore some normalcy to her life when she is forced to retire from teaching, at least temporarily. Antoine returns to the sawmill.

Müller is arrested by the French authorities but is eventually handed back under pressure to the US military. Beriot's patience with Lucienne is running out. Raymond Schwartz is nominated as the mayoral candidate for the Gaullists. Gustave finally takes action.

Lucienne's grief lingers while the identity of Kurt's grave, buried under an alias, threatens to be revealed. Antoine returns from military service searching for work and helps out an old comrade. The Villeneuve council is dissolved and political manoeuvring begins between the Gaullists and Communists. Hortense recovers from her public shaming but becomes increasingly paranoid. Beriot receives an anonymous letter.
- The trial of Dr. Larcher continues with some interesting facts coming to light. Hortense becomes increasingly paranoid.Beriot gives Luccianne an ultimatum, and Schwartz has an offer to run for mayor. Gustave goes on the run that has a nostalgic feeling. A street and square in Villenueve are re named for Resistance heroes.

- After a mill accident the workers go on strike. In 2000, Antoine is disillusioned by the ineffectiveness of the Social Security system he fought to create. In 1975, Daniel takes Tequiero back to Villeneuve to explain to him what happened.
- 7 November 1940. During a film showing, the audience takes advantage of the darkness to boo the handshake between Pétain and Hitler. The French police are called in to find the guilty party.
- An escaped French soldier seeks medical help for an injured English pilot who was shot down by the Germans.
- Antoine and Raymond consider safety vs productivity at the mill. Lucienne volunteers at the church. In 1975 Tequiero visits Daniel with questions about the occupation. In 2003, Lucienne speaks at a memorial museum, then visits the cemetery with Françoise.
- Sept. 28, 1941 German cancellations ruin the sawmill. Raymond buys an aryanized concrete firm with a secret loan. Bériot promises to keep Lucienne's secret. Suzanne tells Marcel her secret. Marceau extracts Gustave's secret with chocolate.
- In French with English subtitles. Lucienne focuses all her attention on Kurt, who's gravely wounded. Meanwhile, the Resistance meets with De Kervern, the new prefect.
- January 10, 1941. De Kervern and Natacha--the cop and the prostitute--join forces to send coded messages for the London "network." Marie is recruited as courier. Gustave tells Marchetti he never saw the postwoman, leading to her arrest.
- February 5, 1941. Marchetti makes a career-ruining error, thereby giving the Germans leverage over him. They demand he find the Essart courier. De Kervern instructs Marie how to pick up messages and where to take them. Marcel is released.
- Secrets, clandestine meetings, and the consequences of sentimentality. An opportunity for Jean puts others in peril.
- Mar. 4, 1941. "Schwartz dirty Jew" appears on the sawmill wall. Raymond is not Jewish but loses customers. Jeanine fires Sarah for alleged theft. Henri and Marie arrange for Lorrain to lead a Jewish refugee family across to the south.
- Mar. 10, 1941. Müller learns Lorrain's name. Henri arranges for Natacha to spy at German HQ but needs Raymond's signature to get her in. Marie copies it from his pass during a tryst. Natacha does the mission but fears she made an error.
- Mar. 11, 1941. Lorrain is mad with rage. Daniel devises an equitable food supply plan. Müller is on to Natacha and Henri. Realizing it, they flee to the South Zone, then hide in an abandoned house with Marie and tied-up Lorrain.
