- Jakob Stäubli gives up his business in the boondocks to look up his daughter Nelly, who moved to Zurich against his will. There he must contend with the temptations of the big city, as well as with his daughter's treacherous fiancé.
- It is August 1, 1914. There is excitement in Master Wiederkehr's hairdressing salon. The local council, the notary, the butcher and other customers discuss the shocking news that Wiederkehr's daughter Rosa has just brought to the house: there is a war. Germany, Belgium and Russia have declared mobilization. The French troops are at the border. The young hairdresser Wipf then experiences his first crucial life experiences during the horrors of war.
- In the village of Gerzenstein, the pre-trial detainee Erwin Schlumpf wants to commit suicide. He is accused of having murdered the merchant Wendolin Witschi. Sergeant Jakob Studer from the Cantonal police can save Schlumpf at the last moment. For the investigating magistrate, Dr. Steffen, the suicide attempt is like a confession. Studer, on the other hand, has serious doubts about Schlumpf's guilt.

Using strong-arms tactics, Uli attains his ends and soon becomes indispensable. Attracted to the sweet Vreneli, Uli is unfortunately lured by Elisi, the master's scheming daughter.

The teacher has been having trouble getting Peter to study, and Heidi's grandfather decides to pose as Santa Claus and scare him into it. This is successful, and Heidi helps Peter learn to read. they attend school. The arrival of summer also brings Klara, with her grandmother and her prim governess Rottenmeyer. Heidi's grandfather suggests that Frau Sesemann stay with him and Heidi, while Rottermeyer stays in the village to visit and keep an eye on Klara. Peter is resentful and destroys Klara's wheelchair. Heidi's grandfather is secretly pleased, as he feels that Klara doesn't really need it. Calamity strikes when a storm causes the brook to overflow, flooding the village and wrecking many houses. Klara pitches in to help and forgets about her illness, emerging a healthy and happy girl. Her father is overjoyed and organizes a festival in a nearby town to help the stricken village.
- Uli, the tenant on the 'Glunggenhof', leads a happy life with his wife and child. Weather luck and honest work bring him rich harvests, and so he becomes overconfident and, advised by false friends, gets entangled in unclean business.
