Gheorghe Calciu began as a medical student in Bucharest, Romania, and was first arrested in 1948 at the age of 23-found guilty of loving his country and opposing the new communist regime. For 16 years he passed through a series of experiences at the limits of human endurance, "re-educated" in the harshest communist prisons in Romania, ones known for exterminating any opposition to the system. He was confined in Pitesti prison, then sent to the Gherla penitentiary, then "the tomb of death" in Jilava, and finally the enticements of Aiud. He was released from prison into a country suffering a reign of terror by the Securitate secret police. Yet he proved that the re-education didn't break him; continuing his mission, he decided to become a priest. Fr. Gheorghe spoke boldly against the system, addressing to the youth of Romania in a series of seven homilies. The fame of these messages spread, and they became known as the Seven Words. In them he urged the younger generation to free themselves from communist enslavement. Due to these messages he was arrested again, in 1978, and sentenced to death. Thanks to pressure from US President Ronald Reagan and other supporters, he was freed and exiled from his native country to the United States of America. Fr. Gheorghe's destiny led him through a series of descents into an inferno of evil; yet by means of his brave self-sacrifice he ascended the Mount of Transfiguration. Routine, frustration, the fear that they may become expendable and could lose their jobs make these women resist heroically and live their destinies like beasts of burden. They had dreams and ideals once. Now they have but one wish: to live long enough to enjoy their retirement. Historical dramas are not always performed at a big scale. - The documentary is the result of more than two years of video-ethnographic work around forced evictions against Roma people in Bucharest, Romania. A început ploaia portraits the story of the Vulturilor 50 community (100 individuals), whom dwelt on the street from September 2014 to June 2016 in order to protest against the forced eviction from their home and to fight for their right to social housing. The vicissitudes of this community are interpolated with a number of interviews with activists, scholars and politicians, composing a picture that speaks of racial discrimination, homelessness, evictions, but also of grassroots practices of resistance and social change. The aim of this work is twofold. On the one hand, also through the activist and participatory approach foregrounding it, the documentary aims to support the struggle for the right to the city that Roma people are bringing to the fore in Bucharest. On the other hand, the film shows how it may be possible to mix academic fieldwork, activist-oriented work and visual methods to create space for empowering experiences and meaningful exchange. This work is a testament to the everyday revolution of Roma people fighting forced evictions from the centre of Bucharest, an endeavour made of fragile dwellings, provisional makeshifts and tenuous - but fierce - occupancy of public space.
