At the scene of the "accident" in which his uncle died, Johnny finds new evidence and is shot at by Duke (Eddie Parker as Edwin Parker), henchman of the man secretly trying to grab up the land by taking over the mortgages. Joan Travers (Christine McIntyre) is antagonistic toward Johhny when her fiance Stephens goes to jail for the embezzlement to trick the real culprit to relax his guard, so Johnny and Sheriff Burt Wheeler (Pierce Lyden) can bring him to justice. After the sheriff and several others are killed, another real estate agent (Edward Peil as Edward J. Peil) confesses that Lansing is the brains behind the land-grab and murders.

Amongst the tenement residents, Tane is charged with going to Chigasaki to see if she can find the father or find out what happened to him. On that trip, what she learns by putting the pieces of the story together is that the father purposefully abandoned the boy as he went off to look for work. This news does not change Tane's outlook or poor treatment of the boy. Nothing changes as the week progresses, however Tane's outlook takes a one hundred eighty degree turn when there is the possibility that she may never see the boy again.

With Chachaji gone, Suraj offers to help Jugnu financially. He asks his father for a raise in his pocket money, to which his father reveals that they are not rich but under heavy debt that can only be paid off if Suraj marries a rich girl of his parents' choice who would brings lots of cash and jewelry in dowry. Suraj does not agree. Suraj's father threatens to commit suicide if he does not marry the girl he has picked for him. This scares Suraj's mother. She does not want her husband to die, so she has a secret meeting with Jugnu and pleads with her to forget Suraj and not see him again. Jugnu is heartbroken, but agrees. Jugnu pretends not to love Suraj anymore. Both are heartbroken, but Suraj responds by becoming wayward and emotionless, while Jugnu falls seriously ill.
