- The reign of the tormented Ludwig, king of Bavaria, from 1864 to 1886.
- Ne'er-do-well Captain Harry Flashman (Malcolm McDowell) is coerced by Otto Von Bismarck (Oliver Reed) into impersonating a Prince.
- King Ludwig II of Bavaria is frustrated, having to accept parliament's will to join Bismarck, rather he his cultured Habsburg friends, in wars. His love-life being as fruitless, he seeks comfort in art. But building fairytale castles and an even grander opera for his musical idol Wagner proves so expensive, his cabinet ends up resorting to formally challenging his mental health, plausible as his beloved brother Otto contracted schizophrenia earlier. Tragedy now lurks in Ludwig's prison-castle.
- Anton Paulisch wanted to make an international career for film and as an actor. So he moved from Munich to Rome.
- David Bailey interviews Italian film director Luchino Visconti whose works include Death In Venice, The Damned and The Leopard. Recorded in Bavaria whilst Visconti was on location making the film 'Ludwig', the director is refreshingly straightforward and matter-of-fact when asked about his influence on Italian neorealism cinema and the prevalence of homosexuality in his work. Bailey also talks to the actors Helmut Berger and Romy Schneider, as they film Ludwig.
