Her ailing mother-in-law passes away - Shanicharni is unable to weep; Years later, Ganju gets killed after consuming holy water from a temple - Shanichari is unable to weep; When Budhwa get's married to a local prostitute, Mungri, who becomes pregnant, and then subsequently aborts the child - Shanichari is unable to weep; When Budhwa runs away from home, never to be seen again - Shanichari is unable to weep. Then a woman named Bhikni enters her life - she is called Rudaali - one who accepts money in turn for loud laments, weeping, & beating of the chest when a rich man passes away for a small fee, some milk, oil, and flour. Bhikni would like Shanichari to also be a Rudaali, but Shanichari eyes are always dry. When Bhikni is called for a day in another town, it is then Shanichari receives word that Ram Avtar is no more and she is called to be a Rudaali. Knowing fully well that she cannot shed tears, Shanichari does attend the funeral - and it is here that she will receive the news that may bring real tears to her eyes.

- Mangal Singh (Rajesh Khanna) has been a career criminal, whose criminal career began to steal food and to keep from starving, and thence got him in deeper and deeper in the criminal world. His crimes have caught up with him and he is sentenced to be hanged. He dramatically escapes with the help of underworld don, Suraj (Pinchoo Kapoor), and is on the run from the police. He lands up in a small village in Northern India, and becomes a school-teacher with the help of local restauranteur, Bijli (Mumtaz). He takes on the identity of Ramu, a friend of Shravan, and goes to live with Shravan's parents, Lalaji (Om Prakash) and Malti (Nirupa Roy), little knowing that they are the parents of a man he killed while escaping from the police.

But Ram is convinced that marriage is not for him. Renuka is overjoyed when her estranged brother, Gopinath, and his son, Rakesh, return from abroad. With their help she hopes to get Ram marries with Aarti. Then things get complicated when Rakesh falls in love with Aarti. Ram leaves town to attend to business, and circumstances propel Renuka to will her entire estate to Rakesh and change his name to Bharat, with the blessings of a renowned saint named Ishwar Baba. After this ceremony, the people around Renuka start showing their true colors, and after an open-palmed stinging slap from Aarti, Renuka realizes that her place in this house is now worse than that of a lowly servant. Renuka now finds out that Aarti, Gopinath, and Rakesh are not who they claim to be, but will this realization be enough to reverse the order of events, or does fate have something even worse in store for Renuka?

They are tragically separated. He subsequently comes across a portrait of Ratna, and shortly after he meets a gypsy, Jhumri (also Hema Malini) who looks exactly like Ratna. Soon Jhumri is also able to recollect her past life, and her love for Prakash. This does not auger well with Rita Malhotra (Asha Sachdev) who loves Suraj, and Appa (Prem Chopra), the son of the leader of the gypsies (Madan Puri), who will not stop at anything to make Jhumri his wife. Appa steals the portrait, and instigates the gypsies against Suraj, so that he can marry Jhumri, and perhaps separate the two lovers again in this birth also.

- Ramniklal lives in Uganda with his son Suraj and daughter Radha when tensions arise in the country and Asians are forced to leave he decides to return back to India.On the day they are about to leave their house is set on fire and Ramniklal passes away Suraj manages to escape with Radha but notices that the women whom he saved and bought out of the house is their maid in Radha's clothes Suraj believes that Radha got burnt in the house but nobody is found to be there leaving with a hope of she being alive.Suraj reaches India where his ancestral property is taken over by Kaalicharan a smuggler who tries to kill him in order to save his life he hides in car of a dancer name Sudha.A stranger claiming to be rival of Kaalicharan decides to help Suraj get his property and find Radha but he turns out to be a cop who wants Suraj to expose Kaalcharan's smuggling racket where Suraj also finds that Sudha is being forced into this business where she is blackmailed by Kaalicharan.
- Ajit Singh and his younger brother, Ranjeet Singh's marred childhood days forces them to form a gang of bandits. When Ranjeet meets Aasha Sinha he is attracted to her and decides to onus himself from the gang much to the displeasure of his brother and right-hand man, Saru. Ranjeet then re-locates to the city to lead a common man's life with Aasha only to find himself arrested, convicted and imprisoned. Sarju then forcibly takes over as leader of the den of bandits abducting Aasha and holding Ajit as hostages until such time Ranjeet is able to make a compromise. Ranjeet then seeks the assistance of the police but they would only help him conditionally forcing him to escape from prison to free the hostages as well as even scores with Sarju.
