- ShortIt is 2020. This is a touching story about a little disabled girl's strength in adversity, set in a village outside of the small city of Butterworth, in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. South Africa is a country of 57.5 million people, has 4 million deaf or hard-of-hearing citizens. Not so long ago, wearing cloth face masks was a prerequisite for any South African leaving their home. The silence in the deaf person's world became more oppressive. Sizwe is a 10-year-old, deaf girl living in a hut in the Transkei with her ailing gogo. It becomes apparent that her gogo will not be able to look after her for much longer as her diabetes is getting progressively worse and she is becoming less mobile. Sizwe is fairly self-reliant in their village where people understand that she is deaf and that she needs to lip read. She goes to a school, she buys groceries from the local spaza shop and she makes beautiful clay animals which she dreams to sell one day. Then Covid hits. it is during this time that Sizwe's gogo has a major health scare. The closest clinic is in Butterworth - more than an hour away, on a good day when transport is readily available. Can Sizwe tackle the journey alone to try and save her grandmother? This film has been endorsed by the South African National Deaf Association who acknowledges the positive influence that this film has on creating awareness and understanding of people who are hard of hearing. The screenplay was selected by 9 international festivals, fetching some awards.
