- Swearengen is spurred to action when a prominent camp member is attacked, Langrishe makes arrangements for his theater, and Jane has an epiphany.
- Tensions flare as the camp faces an uncertain future. Al Swearengen taunts Seth Bullock over his relationship with Alma Garret, and the resulting confrontation between sheriff and criminal turns violent. With a new business venture on the horizon, Joanie Stubbs and Cy Tolliver await the arrival of some fancy new whores on the next stagecoach, which also bears two important reminders of Bullock's past.
- Alma and an increasingly self-destructive Bullock face an abrupt decision on their future. At the Gem, while Swearengen readies for another showdown with Bullock, infighting between Silas Adams and Dan Dority yields more feed for Wu's pigs. Doc Cochran is surprised by Calamity Jane, who has returned to camp in a state of inebriated deterioration.

- When Doc delivers a dire prognosis, one family suffers and the entire camp stands vigil. Merrick avails some private information to Swearengen, who enlists Star and Adams to help con the newly returned Commissioner Jarry. Andy, a former Deadwood pariah, offers himself as the camp's new minister. Trixie pressures a distraught Alma to accept a beneficial proposal.
- Tommy finds a pregnancy test in the trash at his wife's house, and instantly assumes that the test is his daughter Colleen's. Janet is forced to break the news that the test is actually hers. Tommy's Dad calls to tell his son that he is back at home with his wife, and although he is getting the silent treatment he couldn't be happier. Unfortunately, things are not so bright for Chief Reilly, who finds himself in a spot when he's overextended with his bookie. Faced with the possibility of bodily injury, he pockets some jewelry while out on a fire call. Lou also finds himself in a tight spot when his buddy's widow makes a pass at him. The Probie's home life becomes a mess when his girlfriend's teenage daughter Nicole comes to stay with the couple and hits on him. The guys learn that they're getting a female firefighter in the house, and decide to ice her out and alienate her so much that she wants to leave the house.
- The ensuing negative attention turns Royce against Burrell, who takes the heat while Rawls comes to the rescue. At school, Prez's reward/punishment program meets with mixed results, and Colvin looks to restore order by separating disruptive "corner" kids from more attentive "stoop" ones. Chris tries to enlist Michael into Marlo's ranks, spooking Randy along the way. Dukie debunks Randy's "special dead" theory.
- Bullock makes a connection with his son. Swearengen, who has entrusted E.B. to spy on the new telegraph operator, stokes rumors of an annexation of the camp and amends his agreement with Miss Isgringhausen. Cy aims to unburden a troubled man of his bloodstained money. Alma and Martha come to an agreement, and a tragic accident befalls the camp.
- An Amateur Night is organized by the new theater troupe, Pinkertons hit town, the students move to their new school, and Hearst makes another move regarding the elections.
- The Gavin family stages a duo intervention after several disturbing family calls. The mysterious girl from the restaurant leaves Tommy wanting for much more. In order to get her baby back, Janet must take matters into her own hands. A depressed Mike calls Tommy in a moment of despair.
- Tommy is unable to recall the events of the beach-house fire for which he is under investigation for. Meanwhile on the home front, he disapproves of his daughter's rebellious behavior. Richard wants Franco to marry Natalie so he can have more freedom. Lou and his new girlfriend decide to make love in the "holiest" of places. Newlywed Garrity is uncomfortable with Maggie's collection of porn movies.
- Chief Reilly and Lou have trouble convincing the crew to take Tommy back into the firehouse, until a huge warehouse fire reveals a secret about Tommy's replacement, Sully. Tommy's dad returns from his trip around the world with a new wife and a brand new lifestyle. Franco and Laura take their friendship to a new level while Mike finds himself stalking his ex-girlfriend. Sheila can't bring herself to be honest with Tommy about the baby.
- Tommy promises to help Janet with the baby she's expecting, but hides the fact that he's preparing to start a new life with Sheila. Franco pays his daughter Keela a visit, and gets a picture of how Alicia's raising her. Several crew members are going forward with their plans to say goodbye to the firehouse.
- Chief Reilly doesn't know what he's in for when he invites the crew to attend a birthday party for his son's boyfriend. Just as Franco and Laura's relationship is becoming serious, Laura learns a devastating secret. Tommy finds himself being tempted by a woman who's off-limits, while suddenly being forced to make a decision about his family's future.
- Sheila begs Tommy to talk to her teenage son out of his decision to become a fireman. Franco's attempt to make Laura jealous backfires when his hot blind date turns out to have a big physical flaw. Tommy goes out of the way to prove to his hockey teammates that he hasn't gone soft.
- After the death of Chief Reilly, the crew of 62 Truck gets a new chief. Tommy suffers embarrassment during a hockey game against the NYPD. Franco works up the nerve to propose to Natalie, while Sean tries to talk Maggie out of a divorce. As Janet's depression deepens, Sheila makes a surprising proposition.
- A marriage occurs against a backdrop of murder and negotiations for elections and the camp.
- Tommy, Johnny, and Mickey's investigation into Father Murphey's private life leads to tragedy. Laura starts to believe that one of her crew members is secretly harboring romantic feelings for her. Tommy unwittingly becomes involved in a domestic dispute between Sheila and her new girlfriend.
- After tracking down a murderer, Bullock returns to Deadwood a changed man as well as a marked one. Dan and Joanie both take a special interest when teenagers Miles and Flora Anderson arrive in camp in search of their father. Calamity Jane earns her moniker in the Pest Tent, while Swearengen sees through Trixie's subterfuge. Alma remains cold to Farnum's inappropriately advanced bid on her claim.
- Tommy goes to see a doctor who prescribes him medication for his depression and insomnia, with the caveat that he shouldn't drink while on the meds. Dr. Shinsky, Tommy's neighbor and another psychiatrist, tells him that he should take the pills with caution and try to talk to someone before resorting to the medication. Unfortunately for Dr. Shinsky, Tommy decides that he's going to unload his problems on the good doctor. Tommy then enlists the guys to help him build a deck for Dr. Shinsky, with the Probie doing most of the work. Franco and Sean prepare for their photo shoot for the annual Firemens calendar. And the Probie is confronted by the amorous couple who wanted to have sex with him and is caught in an uncomfortable situation.
- Wolcott offers on the claim of two ornery brothers, and reports to Hearst on their progress overall. Miss Isgringhausen strikes a deal with Swearengen, who discusses his options with a friend in a small box. Alma receives very different proposals from both Mrs. Bullock and Ellsworth. A Russian telegraph operator arrives in camp, and Joanie befriends a reluctant Jane.
- Tommy and Janet's divorce begins to seem real as the guys help clear the apartment of Janet's things and Tommy has to face Janet's new relationship face-to-face. On the other hand, Johnny's ex-wife reappears and makes an interesting deal with Tommy that will prove to shake things up among the Gavin family. While babysitting Franco's daughter, Alicia reveals something shocking about her past and knowing the truth about Kayla drives her to take drastic measures, infuriating Franco beyond reason. Sean finally confronts Maggie about her relationship status and Maggie tells him the truth about her wandering eyes. Chief Reilly gets the lights turned out on him and loses his chance at a large amount of money to help support his ailing wife.
- Swearengen is on the mend as Alma begins to take ill - mostly in the mornings. Cy is suspicious of Joanie and Maddie's operation, and makes an unexpected discovery about George Hearst's agent, Wolcott. Bullock attempts to control an outlaw mob and protect the Commissioner, who directed Merrick to print a provocative statement regarding gold claims.
- To monitor the pulse on the street, Carcetti makes the rounds with members of the force. While Proposition Joe shows off his vocal range, Chris shows Snoop how to expose, and dispose of, New York infiltrators. Colvin uses "corner" logic in class. A newly sober McNulty attends an Irish cop wake - with a not-so-sober Bunk. Michael is dismayed by the unexpected return of a missing family member.
- Tommy goes on another memorable date with Beth for the sake of the crew. Black Shawn proves himself in an unexpected arena. Franco realizes what he's really lost while Latrina shows she knows how to keep Lou happy. Dad gives Tommy some insight into his childhood.
- Franco's former girlfriend Nez tells him that he is the father of her five-year old daughter, but only after she sleeps with Sean. Franco decides to take a paternity test to determine if Nez is lying. Chief Reilly is upset about being suspended without pay for the barroom incident he has been implicated in, and wants to fight the decision. Although Mike the Probie is growing increasingly uncomfortable with the frequent visits from Andrew, a guy whose life he saved in a fire, he agrees to have a drink with him. Tommy takes Sheila out for dinner, and she plants a goodnight kiss on him at the end of the evening that leaves him feeling guilty. After being told that she doesn't have permission to go, Colleen is in a car accident while on her way to a concert in the city.
- After executing his last act of justice as a Montana marshal, Seth Bullock relocates to a gold-mining camp known as Deadwood in Dakota Territory, where he and partner Sol Star look to start a hardware business. Bullock soon crosses paths with another new arrival - legendary gunfighter Wild Bill Hickok - and clashes with the formidable boss of the Gem Saloon and occasional deal broker, Al Swearengen.
- As suspicions arise that "road agents" may have been the true perpetrators of a massacre, Swearengen takes a special interest in the health of its sole survivor, a young girl ministered to by the unlikely team of Doc Cochran and Calamity Jane. Meanwhile, Bullock and Star attempt to buy property from Swearengen, who suspects an alliance between Wild Bill and the hardware fellows.
- Although they are still mourning the death of their son, Tommy and Janet are moving forward with their separation. Tommy is also still trying to maintain his sobriety while now bogged down with new responsibilities, which include caring for his father. Sean Garrity has struck up a secret relationship with Tommy's sister Maggie, and unfortunately for him, he's really starting to fall for her. Sheila finds condoms in her son Damian's room, and asks Tommy to have a conversation with him about it. In confronting Damian, Tommy learns that the teenager is carrying on an affair with one of his teachers, Mrs. Turbody. And when the city's no-smoking ban threatens the firehouse, the crew tries to make things interesting by starting a big wager on whether they can quit smoking.
- In an effort to revive Tommy's love life (and morale), the crew plans a night out to the hot-spot Lotus. At the club, Franco gets hit on by an older woman named Alicia. While he's put-off by their difference in age, he's intrigued by her confidence. Financial problems are affecting a few guys in the house. Lou is trying to keeps his financial problems under wraps, but with the Chief asking him to borrow money, its growing increasing difficult for Lou to hide the fact that he was schemed out of thousands of dollars by a Hooker. The Chief is trying to cover the costs on the nursing home his wife is in. Meanwhile, Franco is considering taking the lieutenants exam, and The Probie is considering a transfer to another house somewhere he wont be hassled as the most junior member of the house.
- Joanie discovers what happened at the Chez Ami and confides in Charlie Utter. Swearengen meets with Alma regarding Miss Isringhausen's allegations...and her connection to the Pinkertons. The town leaders convene to discuss pressing issues, but neglect to invite E.B., the mayor. By way of a strange circumstance, Utter comes into possession of Wild Bill's final correspondence.
- Alma opens the doors to the new Bank of Deadwood and business is brisk. Hostetler return to Deadwood with the horse that killed Bullock's son. The Sheriff accepts that his son's death was due to an accident and blames no one. He finds himself acting as a go-between Hostetler and Steve, who has been taking care of the livery in Hostetler's absence and now feels he's being pushed out. Langrische makes an offer to buy Joanie's house with a view to opening a theater but Joanie imposes certain conditions before she sells. Hearst asks Cy Tolliver and Al Swearengen to a meeting to discuss business.
- Tommy Gavin finally meets his ex-wife's new boyfriend, Roger, and enlists his brother and nephew to help sabotage Roger's financial and computer records. After confronting his ex-wife Janet about her plans to move the kids to California, Tommy grows increasingly frustrated and his drinking gets worse. When Bobby Teff, a firefighter from another house comes out in a newspaper article and reveals that there is a secret society of homosexual firefighters, Chief Reilly is livid. Reilly takes it upon himself to confront Teff and teach him a lesson in propriety. Tommy peeks into a window, only to find Sheila, his cousin's widow, receiving a shoulder rub from another woman. Tommy's imagination runs wild as he suspects Sheila is now a lesbian.
- Tommy Gavin is a firefighter and father who's struggling to cope with the daily turmoil of his life. After his wife Janet leaves him, Tommy moves into a house across the street from her to stay close to their three children. However, the proximity of their relationship is difficult. Tommy isn't dealing very well with his estranged wife dating other men and using his kids as spies, paying them to divulge information about Janet's activities. Lifewise, the stress of his job is starting to get to him. Tommy is haunted by the memories of September 11 and even hallucinates the ghosts of the family and friends he lost. His subconscious manifests itself in the images of these former firefighters, predominately his cousin Jimmy who he often confides in. Tommy works hard to conceal his feelings from his firehouse buddies, even though many of them are still suffering as well.
- The family waits for the reading of the will. Mike finds a lump. Franco keeps working on Laura. Tommy's sister shows up. The Chief's wife gets worse.
- When Tommy discovers where Janet has taken the kids, the only way he can get time off to find them is by joining his new firehouse's competitive Barbershop Quartet. Lou and Chief Reilly conspire to get Tommy back into the old firehouse, but the rest of the crew is getting attached to Tommy's replacement, Sully, who's a gourmet cook with great people skills. Mike has trouble controlling his emotions when his girlfriend Theresa breaks up with him.
- Tommy and Janet are brought together by a sudden tragedy in the Gavin family. Meanwhile, the crew becomes concerned when Jerry fails to show up for work. Mike looks for advice about his sexuality, while Maggie surprises Sean with a spontaneous decision about their wedding.
- Swearengen directs Farnum to buy back the Garret claim. Garret's wife, Alma, prevails on Calamity Jane and Wild Bill for help with the claim issue. Hickok's respect for Bullock grows and, as a result, he commissions Bullock to do a review of the Garret claim. An ailing colleague, Andy Cramed, rejoins the Bella Union, and Wild Bill's run of luck at poker ends abruptly.

- Now that he is having sex with Sheila, Tommy cannot shake his visions of her late husband's ghost. On top of dreaming about Jimmy, the shaky finances that have him owing Janet four thousand dollars have also led to some angry and reckless driving that gets him cited by a vengeful cop. At work, female firefighter Laura Miles has made it clear that Jerry is in no position to deny her request for a private bathroom. And as Tommy offers to help reunite Colleen and her girlfriend, Jennifer, Andrew apologizes for the beating he gave Mike following their failed three-way with his fiancé and then insists that he move in with him now that Geneva has left.
- On a lark, the guys in the house decide to have a contest to determine whose manhood is the longest. Unfortunately, Franco and a girlfriend run into a little trouble as they take his measurements. Tommy's Dad calls looking for something to calm the monkey down. Turns out Uncle Teddy won a monkey over a baseball bet, and now the two grown men don't know what to do with the crazy primate. Janet tells Tommy that Colleen has been suspended from school for making out in the hallway with her girlfriend. Tommy is comforted by the fact that at least Colleen isn't with the Murphy kid anymore. Tommy accompanies Sheila to a party and tries to convince everyone that they're not dating.
- Alma's father, Otis Russell, arrives from New York to "help" with her claim. Swearengen strikes a bargain with Adams to rid him of some legal baggage involving the arriving magistrate. Jewel journeys to Doc's cabin for help with her leg. Eddie resumes work at the Bella Union, while Bullock is angered by the choice of the corrupt Con Stapleton as the new sheriff.
- Tommy seeks revenge. Sean questions his faith. The Chief must make a decision about his wife. Lou and Candy's relationship reaches a turning point. The crew responds to a high-rise fire.
- Chief Reilly is facing severe repercussions after beating up a gay firefighter. In a desperate attempt to find a witness who will testify on his behalf, Chief Reilly seeks out a bartender who was present during the altercation at the gay bar. Tommy is growing increasingly jealous of his ex-wife's new relationship. Additionally, he doesn't exactly receive the sympathy he is expecting when he vents to Sheila about his depression in dealing with the break-up of his marriage. Of course Sheila is unsympathetic since she lost her husband Jimmy on 9/11. Lou inquires with a post-traumatic stress group about possibly sharing his poetry.
- Tommy plays hero in someone else's uniform which causes confusion in the firehouse. Colleen suffers heartbreak and takes it out on Tommy. Natalie asks Franco for a favor. A rift between Mike and Black Shawn nearly leads to blows. Tempers flare between Tommy and the Chief Feinstein after Tommy makes a move on his daughter.
- The letter is published, Wyatt Earp hits town, delays continue with the theater, and Hearst makes a move.
- An opium theft leaves Swearengen trying to find a common language with his supplier, and navigating murky waters to deal with the mess. Meanwhile, Silas Adams, bagman for the magistrate from Yankton, arrives with bad news for Swearengen. Bullock regrets having raised his hand at the government meeting. An unwelcome and ailing Reverend Smith gravitates to the Gem and its new piano.
- Pressured by his mom into dating a friend's daughter, Mike is disappointed -- but not surprised -- to find that she's overweight. But after forcing him to admit to his ambivalence about their date, Theresa proceeds to give Mike the best sex he's ever had. After insisting that Jerry keep her new bathroom private, Laura watches Tommy defy orders to rescue a dog and wonders how long it will be before his recklessness gets him or someone else... killed. Meanwhile, as Sean frets over how the new firefighters calender makes him seem gay, Kenny tells his wife, Phyllis, about his affair with Sondra, only to learn she is seeing another fireman.
