- Biff Dugan, the eldest son of a poor family living in a tenement on the squalid East Side of New York, leads a gang of hoodlums, among whose members is his brother Porky. Their sister Jess is a consumptive whose health was ruined in a sweatshop. During a melee in a mission run by reformer Henry Davis, the Dugan gang encounters Billy Drew and his sister Cora, newcomers to the city. Porky saves Cora from the unwelcome attentions of Biff's rival, Spike Golden, and the two fall in love. Later, when Spike is killed in a gang war, Biff is wrongfully convicted of the murder and executed in the electric chair. Porky, who served a short term in prison for his part in the crime, comes back to the city to find that Jess has died and Cora has returned to the country. When his gang delivers the man who betrayed Biff, Porky, whose heart has been softened by Cora and Billy, lets the man go. Finally, Porky retires to the country to lead the quiet life of a farmer with Cora as his wife.—Pamela Short
- The Dugan family lives in a crowded tenement on the lower East Side of New York. Biff is the leader of a notorious gang, and Porkey, his young brother, is a faithful follower. Even Jimmie, his kid brother, has a gang of his own. Jessie, the sister, works hard in a sweatshop, refuses to touch any of the stolen money which her brothers offer her, and strives to keep the home together on her scant earnings. Cora Drew, a girl from the country, is working in a factory and living in a room next to the Dugan family. She meets Porkey, who protects her from the advances of the district political leader, but refuses to accept his attentions because of his bad habits and associates. The politician, Hennessy, engages Biff's gang to stuff the ballot boxes. Cora, thinking the only way to save Porkey is to have him arrested, brings about the arrest of both Porkey and Biff, but they come out of prison more hardened than ever. In a fight which follows, Hennessy is killed by his own gun, and Biff, who is not guilty, is 'framed up" and sent to the electric chair. Porkey, who has only a short prison sentence, returns to old scenes to renew the combat, but his gang is disorganized and he is wounded. At last, however, the man who swore his brother's life away it at his mercy. He starts to slay the perjurer, but the influence of Cora, whom he truly loves, restrains him and he sets the wretch free. Porkey and Cora then go to the country, where love and outdoor life make this former gangster a real man.—Moving Picture World synopsis
