'Twas Ever Thus
Largely a typical Keystone flirting-in-the-park one-reeler, this one is differentiated slightly by dressing the players in early nineteenth century garb and having them adopt antiquated manners -- and the players do carry it off most convincingly. But once you get past that, there's nothing to make this one different from any of the dozen or so that Keystone turned out from 1914-1916.
Mack Swain, as always, is good as someone down on his luck. Played a little differently, we might have sympathy for the character, but 'Ambrose' was never played for sympathy. Swain played variations on this character for twenty years, and he remained big, bluff and human throughout.
