Zaza, ( Pauline Frederick ) is a beautiful singer at a popular music hall in Paris. She leads a wild life and is sought after by many beaux's of the city. One evening she meets Bernard Dufrene, ( Julian L'Estrange ) a wealthy man about town, and after a facetious flirtation, she falls in love with him. Bernard soon establishes her in an apartment where they they live happily for several months. Zaza has never experienced the feelings of true love before, she changes her crude nature and dedicates herself to make this man happy. She is struck a terrible blow, when she learns Bernard is married and has a little daughter. Her savage nature returns, and Zaza's first thought is revenge. She decides the best act of retribution is to go to his wife and announce herself as his mistress. However, just before she can announce herself, she meets his little daughter. The sweet innocence of the child touches Zaza so, she cannot put the child through a scandal. Zaza returns to the stage and devotes herself to her art, she becomes the idol of Paris. Bernard hearing of her triumphs, comes to renew his attention to Zaza, she now struggles emotionally with the overwhelming love she still has for him, but conquers her feelings and sends him back to his wife and child.
Produced by Famous Player Film Co; Charles Frohman Company, and directed by Edwin S. Porter, Zaza was Pauline Frederick's third film. Her performance and the picture garnered many rave reviews, establishing the actress as one of the finest film screen stars. Ironically, the film could have been lost in a fire at the Famous Players Studios, but had been stored in a fireproof vault, sadly it is now on the long list of silent film casualties.
