- Mountaineer Pap Clayton has promised his daughter Sairy Ann (Dorothy Gish) to his cousin Jed Martin, but Sairy Ann loves Dr. Richard Cavanagh (Sam DeGrasse), the son of Judge Lee Cavanagh. In the midst of a feud between the Claytons and the Jacksons, a jealous Jed sets out to kill Richard. Jed shoots a deputy who gets in his way and is taken before Judge Cavanagh, whom the Claytons have threatened to kill if Jed is convicted. The Claytons are true to their word when Cavanagh finds him guilty, and Richard immediately vows to kill Jed, who has escaped. Sairy Ann, however, reminds Richard that he has railed against family feuding and has said that only the law can take a life. A sobered Richard captures Jed and hands him over to authorities; then, after he has forgiven the Claytons, he and Sairy Ann become engaged.—Pamela Short
- Sairy Ann Clayton is the eldest of the six motherless children of "Pap" Clayton, a Virginia mountaineer and moonshiner in partnership with his cousin, Jed Martin, who he has betrothed to Sairy Ann. Dr. Richard Cavanagh, son of the county Judge, finds "Chub" Clayton hurt by a fall, tends him, gains the admiration of Sairy Ann, and induces her to bring the children to town for clothes and shoes, thereby rousing the jealousy of Jed Martin. The day the children are in town the still is raided, and "Pap" and Jed are jailed for months. The doctor takes the children to the home of his father, the judge, and begins their education. The released convicts return accompanied by the head of the clan, Bad Bald Clayton and the doctor hears him tell Sairy Ann that the still was raided on the information given by a Jackson and only the life of a Jackson can square the account. The ancient feud between Claytons and Jacksons had died out. The doctor is horrified and later remonstrates with Sairy Ann and tells her that only the law should take life, but Sairy Ann defends the clan spirit, condones the proposed murder, and quarrels with him. Clayton takes Sairy Ann and the children home. Jed is rejected, and realizing that Sairy Ann is in love with the doctor he sets out to kill him. Sairy Ann on her father's horse takes a short cut and notifies the sheriff. Jed kills the deputy, but is arrested and brought to trial before Judge Cavanagh, who is warned in an anonymous letter that he will be shot if Jed is convicted. All the Claytons, heavily armed, attend the trial. The judge fearlessly sentences Jed. At the signal the Claytons shoot up the court and Jed kills the judge. Most of the Claytons are then killed in a running fight with deputies and citizens. Sairy Ann hides in Bad Bald's store and is followed by Jed, who is wounded. The doctor to avenge his father follows Jed, and would have killed him had not Sairy Ann reminded him of his own words that only the law has the right to take life. The doctor surrenders Jed to the sheriff, having been desperately wounded by Jed, he falls back in Sairy Ann's arms. Sairy Ann goes to the mountains, but when doctor is convalescent he sends for her and the children and the feud is forgiven.—Moving Picture World synopsis
