- When it is a question of "My Neighbor or Myself?" Arnold St. Clair always manages to save his own skin. He became wealthy through his marriage to Adeline Stratton. Before his marriage he dishonored Myra Roland who, unable to face her shame, married Hugh Roland, a newspaper editor. She writes St. Clair a letter telling him of her marriage and the birth of a child which, although his, will be believed her husband's. The note falls into the hands of Adeline's uncle, Mark Stratton, who manages to further his own ends by its possession. The coal mines which he owns are failing and he tells St. Clair that he has decided to divide the ownership of them with the people; in other words, he appoints a day when the workmen will be able to invest their hard-earned savings by purchasing shares. St. Clair dares not refuse his aid in this movement, but not quite trusting his uncle he goes to his friend, Roland, and tells him that he wants him to get the credit for the philanthropic movement and for him to push it by means of his press. Roland, trusting St. Clair, and enthusiastic over the prospects for the poor, orders his paper to laud the movement with the result that the laborers everywhere invest their savings. Ruin eventually faces them. St. Clair sees Mark Stratton's devotion to Myra and realizes that Myra may tell her husband of her past. To prevent this St. Clair saves his skin by killing Mark Stratton. This last move brings him into the power of John Baldwin, brother of Myra, and the childhood lover of Adeline, for both he and Adeline see the murder. St. Clair, who is so in the habit of blaming others for his crime, tells his wife, Adeline, that he saw John Baldwin commit the murder. Disgusted with the man whom she now sees in his true light, Adeline turns to Baldwin for consolation. Accidentally Roland learns the truth about the child he has believed his own, and insane with anger, he rushes to St. Clair, intending to kill him. He arrives at the house to find that the Devil has claimed his prize. Adeline is bending over the dead body of her husband, who died of fear when the detectives learned the truth about the murder. Still infuriated he returns home and is greeted at the door by his little daughter whose love has made his life worthwhile, but his fury is beyond control and he reaches forth to choke the little girl, who cries that her mother has fainted. Coming to his senses he goes to his wife whom he had thrown from him in anger when he learned the truth, but the love that he has given her through their married life conquers his hatred and he takes her to his heart again.—Moving Picture World synopsis
