- Claire Sherlock travels to India to become her aunt's ward after her mother's death in England. Soon after marrying a British officer, Claire comes to the attention of Ram Singh, the Rajah of Mawar, and when she refuses his advances, he uses his hypnotic power to make her love him. Her husband leaves her because of her obsession with Ram Singh, after which she becomes a member of the rajah's harem. The rajah's brutality makes her decide to escape, and while she hides out with her sister-in-law and fights the power of the rajah's spell, Ram Singh is killed as he leads an unsuccessful coup against the royal governor. Then, with the hypnotic spell broken because of the rajah's death, Claire is quickly reconciled with her husband.—Pamela Short
- Claire is born in the London slums, but upon her mother's death she goes to India to live with her aunt. Here she meets Harvey Walcott, aide de camp to the governor or an Indian province, and they are attracted to each other. Their married life is happy until Claire's beauty attracts Prince Ram Singh, Rajah of Mawar. The prince is possessed of the power of hypnotism and when he finds that Claire will pay no heed to his advances, exerts his unusual powers to make her do his bidding. Under the influence of the prince, Claire seemingly encourages his advances until her husband casts her off. She becomes an inmate of Ram Singh's harem, but because of his brutality puts into execution a plan of escape. She takes up her abode in the hut of a dancing girl, where her baby is born. Discovering there is a plan afoot to sell her child, she darkens her face to resemble a native and takes flight. With her baby she arrives at the home of Walcott's sister, where she is recognized, taken in and cared for. When she asks for her husband, she is told that he has been killed in an engagement with the followers of the prince who incited them to revolt against the British.
