Lloyd...when he still played jerks.
"Why Pick on Me?" is a familiar short in that it stars three folks who made a lot of films together at the time: Harold Lloyd, Snub Pollard and Bebe Daniels. These all were made before Lloyd hit the big time in the 1920s...becoming the biggest comedy star in the world.
You really cannot see greatness in this one set at the beach...as Harold's character looks like his 1920s spectacled guy, but is a thoroughly unlikable jerk instead of being so sweet like in his later films. This incarnation of Lloyd mostly spends the film stealing from others and mistreating them all in an effort to impress a girl. In the process, he ends up in a fist fight with Snub, steals from a tiny man and does everything he can to make a nuisance of himself. And, all of this is very slapsticky...with lots of hitting, kicking and the like. It's pretty much a product of its day when this sort of knockabout comedy was king...but also quite forgettable as well. Watchable but nothing more.
