A incomplete copy of this film (4 out of 7-8 reels) was found in a New Zealand film archive in 2010. The last two reels seem to be the major portion of the missing scenario, and the restoration has provided a synopsis of the action to complete the story.
One sequence, running about 200 ft. in length, was filmed on a strip of Technicolor film, which comprised the finale of the film, where the two lovers are reunited in a blossoming garden. This sequence is currently lost.
Unlike the Nelson Eddy-Jeanette MacDonald film (Maytime (1937)), this version of "Maytime" uses the plot and characters of the original stage production.
The original Broadway production of "Maytime" opened on August 16, 1917 at the Shubert Theater in New York City and ran for 492 performances closing on October 19, 1918. The play was written by Rida Johnson Young, music by Sigmund Romberg and lyrics by Rida Johnson Young.
On 6 Jun 2010, Variety reported that Maytime was one of over seventy films discovered in a storage vault belonging to the New Zealand Film Archive. However, the print found was said to be badly deteriorated. An article in the 7 Jun 2010 New York Times indicated that it was one of various films which would be "repatriated" to the U.S., and preserved, if possible.
