The film was screened at Georgetown's Strand Theater on 25 and 26 March 2006. Five of the local children (now in their late 80s and 90s) who appeared in the movie were guests of honor. Live music to accompany the movie was performed by a direct descendant of Mrs. Mildred Higgins, one of the local child actors. Efforts of the Georgetown County Historical Society, Georgetown County Museum, and numerous others made this possible.
Although the setting for most of the story was New England, to avoid winter weather it was filmed in Georgetown, SC. The filmmakers planned to move to Charleston when they needed to film with actual ships, but Georgetown's business community was able to produce two suitable ships to keep them there.
Scenes set in the Orient were filmed in New York's Chinatown, provoking a small riot from locals upset with the way Hollywood depicted the Chinese.
The City of Georgetown, South Carolina, has obtained a copy of this film. The curator of the town museum has watched it, and it is in excellent condition. The only caveat is that all of the title cards are in Russian. Once those can be translated, the movie will be shown to the public.
