Women in Prison always has been a mainstay of . . .

Warning: Spoilers
. . . American Cinema. ALICE THE JAILBIRD is perhaps the first U. S. film to add a new wrinkle involving a canine lawman shooting a misbehaving female in her rear end BEFORE she is incarcerated. Talk about taking a bite out of crime! Unfortunately, some of this genre's more popular later tropes, such as the abusive matron and the significant other cell mate, are either underdeveloped or absent entirely from this Alice outing. It's said that you cannot have everything, and that's certainly proven by the average Dizzy corporation film.

Alice, the hardened criminal!

In "Alice the Jail Bird", Alice and her friends Julius and the turtle all commit a most heinous crime....they steal a pie that is cooling in the window sill. As a result, a cop gives chase and eventually you see Alice and her accomplices in prison breaking rocks. However, Julius manages to escape and eventually he returns for Alice. What about the poor turtle??

This is one of the better Alice shorts, as there's a lot of action, some very cute gags and it's quite enjoyable. Overall, Disney did a better than usual job with this one...even though he made Alice a hardened criminal!!

Alice the Jail Bird (1925)

*** (out of 4)

Fun entry in the Walt Disney series has a bit of a darker side as Alice and Julius are thrown in jail after stealing a pie. Once in the jail they must try and stay clear of the warden and other bad guys. ALICE THE JAIL BIRD will appeal to fans of the series as once again it has some very good animation and there's no doubt that the mix of it with the live action made for a good match. There are several funny scenes here but the highlight is certainly the scene where Julius is trying to get away from the cop while riding a turtle who gets its head shot off only to be reattached. Once we get to the actual jail things aren't as funny but fans will still be entertained by this one.
