I am rather surprised this film has attracted no attention. It is a surprisingly subdued and sophisticated piece for Turpin (who is, mark you, not the least sophisticated of the US comics by any means) - a really rather effective satirical comedy that profiles a senatorial election with all its typical fakery and chicanery. Turpin plays a candidate who poses as the worker's friend but spends hi time buttering up wealthy women and seizing upn any opportunity to womanise. Is about as near as Turpin got to genuine character acting for which he had, I always feel, an unrealised potential. There are certainly the trademark elements both of slapstick and voyeurism but here the satirical frame and the much slower pacing gives even these a mildly Tati-esque quality.....an an atmosphere that is quite different from most of his other films.
