Unicycle for One

Florence Brady, the star of this Vitaphone variety-style short subject, has quite a voice and at the time she made this film, had come off a recent starring role in Earl Carroll's Vanities -- Carroll was in competition with Florenz Ziegfeld's follies, not that Ziegfeld ever seemed to notice. She sings three songs and certainly 'Here Comes the Showboat' is delivered very engagingly.

However, looking at this film makes it clear why some people never made the transition to film. I kept thinking that something was wrong with the print, as if the nitrate was intermittently losing its shape, and then I thought the lens it was shot through was distorted.... but it turned out that Miss Brady kept shaking her head, and given the extreme roundness of her face, it seems to be distorting the shape.

Still, the songs are delivered very engagingly, even if their sentiments are sometimes shockingly old-fashioned to the sheltered inhabitant of the 21st Century.

A Cycle of Songs review

Florence Brady sings a trio of songs in an early sound short designed to show off the wonders of Vitaphone as much as Brady's singing talents.

The final portion of this one is a bit problematic when seen today.

This is a very simple short from Vitaphone. Alice Brady simply sings a medley of songs with the orchestra off camera. She has LOTS of pep and she isn't too bad...and her energy reminds me of the Vitaphone shorts starring Baby Rose Marie. It's nothing special but enjoyable. However, towards the end she sings a song about showboats that was very popular back in the day but which will no doubt cause many to become offended today...especially when she's singing about the 'Darkies' (a nasty racial slur). Fortunately, while she tries to sound a bit like a black singer, she avoids the full minstrel routine...no black-face makeup in this one (thank God).

Short Never Takes Off

A Cycle of Songs (1928)

** (out of 4)

Florence Brady does three songs in this rather uneventful Vitaphone short. She starts off with "Sunshine" and then follows that up with "Now That She's Off My Hands" and closes things out with the Billy Rose song "Here Comes the Show Boat." Overall I was left pretty underwhelmed with Mrs. Brady as she just never really captured my attention. If I had to pick a highlight for this film it would be the last number, which at least had a pretty good beat to it. However, I found Brady's voice to be rather high-pitched and at times it was somewhat painful to the ears and especially when she'd go to his some of the higher notes. As with a lot of these Vitaphone shorts, this here was filmed obviously very cheap as the camera just stays in one position and it seems that the entire thing was done in just one take. It's always interesting seeing various stars of vaudeville in these old shorts but this one here didn't really take off.
