Fair;y typical early Disney cartoon starring Oswald
llltdesq15 May 2015
Warning: Spoilers
This is a short featuring Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, in his Disney iteration. There will be spoilers ahead:

Oswald is driving to see his sweetheart, but he isn't the only one. Oswald has a rival, a bear, of all things. The intended is a cat. Oswald's rival is clearly more affluent and drives a nicer car. He gets ahead of Oswald using a standard cartoon gimmick involving cars. Oswald gets back in the lead when the nicer car refuses to cross a pool of mud, while Oswald's car not only crosses, but taunts the other car to boot.

Oswald gets to the cat's house and begins playing a banjo and singing, the notes floating up to the cat, who shows her pleasure. The cartoon gets interesting when a goat comes up and starts eating sheet music in unusual and creative ways. Oswald makes the mistake of setting his banjo down while struggling with the sheet music he's playing. There's a great joke in here I won't discuss.

The goat eats Oswald's banjo, Oswald demands it be returned, the goat refuses and Oswald does what any cartoon character would do in the same situation. He starts playing music by using the goat as an instrument. This annoys a sleeping old man, who starts throwing things out a window, including the required chamberpot.

During this, Oswald's rival shows up and the cat comes out. Some nice gags in here, as Oswald and his rival vie for her attention, to the point that they begin to fight each other. The lady fair is not amused and the two swain get their comeuppance in a very funny way.

This short is available on the Disney Treasures The Adventures of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit DVD set and is well worth watching.

Another cute Oswald cartoon from Disney
planktonrules23 March 2014
This is one of the early Oswald the Lucky Rabbit cartoons that was directed by Walt Disney. Soon, the studio would fire Disney and his favorite animator, Ub Iwerks, and replace them with cheaper help.

In this installment, Oswald and another animal (what he is, I am not sure) are vying for the affections of a cat. Both race to her house but Oswald arrives first and attempts to serenade her. But, his guitar is eaten--and he has to improvise. Soon, his rival arrives and they begin duking it out--and the cat decides on a much less troublesome suitor.

While this is not among the very best Oswald cartoons, it's quite agreeable, breezy and fun. Worth seeing.

Early Efforts
boblipton28 July 2006
Oswald and his rival, the bear take their automobiles to goo a-wooing the cat, who is the ingénue in this series of silent cartoons -- I know that in cartoons, species are not hard-and-fast, but this is getting a little silly. The two of them race there in the cars, and Oswald serenades his inamorata. It's a good basic story and Disney would use in several times over the years.

Disney, although not particularly distinguished a cartoon producer at this stage, was ambitious, and this is a decent little effort. The story is good, the gags are well ordered and if the artwork is not of very high quality, there is, as usual in the Oswald cartoons, one interesting POV shot: look for it while Oswald is serenading the cat.

Unrequited
Hitchcoc2 August 2018
Oswald's rival is a wolf who has designs on the same young lady cat that he has. The cartoon is, first, a series of efforts to get to her house. Then Oswald tries to serenade her but is repelled by an uncooperative goat. Soon the other guy gets there, and the results are unfortunate for both of them.

Decent
TheLittleSongbird1 July 2012
Rival Romeos is not one of my favourites, and most likely never will be, but I did enjoy it. It is sweet, funny and engaging, but I don't think I could ever go as far to say that it's a milestone. The story is a classic set-up, and its sweetness and charm makes up for some of lack of originality of the material. The gags are well-timed and amusing, but never anything hilarious and were used even better since(especially Steamboat Willie). The characters are still engaging, Oswald is likable and not irritating and Pete is a good foil. The animation quality has some interesting touches like the looking down on Oswald technique, to give a change in perspective, and turning effects words into action seen with the word Honk in the air settling over Oswald's car, and is mostly smooth. The music is also not bad, but could've been even better incorporated with real sound and music, which I think would have elevated the gags. But overall, a decent cartoon, a milestone it is not, but I do recommend it. 7/10 Bethany Cox

An American vice president got into big trouble . . .
pixrox116 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
. . . earlier this century for leaving out the "e" when he wrote the word "tomatoes" on an elementary school blackboard. Perhaps Vice President Snipe learned to spell from Oswald the Loser Rabbit cartoons. When the title of RIVAL ROMEOS is spelled with just one "e," who's to say if that's right? Since its inception, the Dizzy Corporation has played fast and loose with the Principle Tenets of American Spelling, misspelling thousands of words on-screen whenever they felt like it. If their product were intended exclusively for international export to U. S. enemies, perhaps this bent for misinformation would be commendable. However, when such a pernicious practice targets the Youth of America, it is clearly an "Enemy Within."

Rival Romeos review
JoeytheBrit4 May 2020
Oswald was something of a forerunner to Disney's Mickey Mouse, and the similarities are plain to see in this amusing little comedy. In fact, Oswald seems a lot more likable than Mickey in some ways.

Romeo's Rival.
morrison-dylan-fan5 September 2015
Warning: Spoilers
After watching the enjoyable film Sky Scrappers,I was delighted to find other Oswald titles from 1928,which led to me getting ready to see Romeo in action.

The plot:

Driving to see his sweetheart,Oswald runs into a driver who wants to get past.Finding himself in a race,Oswald is able to get ahead of the driver by not being afraid of a muddy road.As he parks up to meet his sweetheart,Oswald is shocked to find that the rival driver has followed him along.

View on the film:

Making Oswald and the other characters stand out, director Walt Disney gives the background a rough sketch appearance, which makes the characters really stand out.Along with the bold characters,Disney gives the movie a charming comic book atmosphere, thanks to words popping across the screen, which Disney uses for some very good sight gags,as the two Romeo's battle it out.
