I have seen many dozen of the early Felix the Cat cartoons and because I am missing a few, I am glad I got the new DVD from Alpha Video and the collection of John Carpenter, as it featured several shorts I haven't been able to find elsewhere. This is one of the shorts included in this collection.
In the sound era, many silent cartoons had sound retroactively added to them and it's usually easy to tell because it was done so sloppily. This cartoon is about the worst example of one of these I can think of, as Felix the cat doesn't talk but jabbers almost non- stop in a very annoying manner. It really is terrible.
The film begins with Felix being blown across the ocean by a hose. He lands in an odd land with black people and tiger(??). Soon he sees an elephant being tormented by some jerk and Felix convinces the elephant to come back to America so he can be in the circus. Together the two make up a very impressive and strange act!
Apart from the terrible sound effects, there is a lot of eye rolling in this one...and I have no idea why. But the rest of the cartoon is quite clever and cute. I give this one a 5 and if you can either find one without sound OR turn off your TV volume, I'd give this one a 6 or 7!
