- Two homeless vagabonds hide out in a vacant mansion and pose as the residents when prospective lessees arrive and try to rent it.
- Homeless, penniless, and one step ahead of the police, Stanley and Oliver take refuge in the home of big-game hunter Colonel Buckshot while the owner is on safari. When Lord and Lady Plumtree call to inquire about renting the house, Oliver pretends to be Colonel Buckshot, while Stanley masquerades as both butler and maid. All goes as well as can be expected, with Lady Plumtree and Stanley--in his guise as "Agnes"--engaging in girl talk, until the real Colonel Buckshot returns unexpectedly.—Paul Penna <tterrace@wco.com>
- Ollie (Oliver Hardy) and Stan (Stan Laurel) are vagabonds being chased by the police. They hide in the cellar of the mansion of a Quartermain-esque adventurer, Colonel Wilburforce Buckshot (James Finlayson), who departs for a safari in South Africa. The mansion is to be rented out until his return, but the staff sneak off for a holiday, leaving the house empty. Ollie and Stan become trapped as each and every time they try to leave through a different exit, they see the angry cop looking for them. A honeymooning couple, Lord Leopold Ambrose Plumtree (Charles K. Gerrard) and Lady Plumtree (Thelma Todd) arrive via taxi and want to rent the house. Ollie disguises himself as Colonel Buckshot and Stan disguises himself as both butler Hives and chambermaid Agnes when Lady Plumtree insists on meeting the maid. Ollie entertains the couple with a rendition on the piano while Stan struggles to know what to do with the maid's corset. Ollie brags he is proficient at billiard, so Lord Plumtree requests to see the billiard room. Ollie leads him on a tour of the mansion from bedroom to bedroom to the Colonel's den, but can never seem to locate the billiard room. Agnes loses her bloomers and tumbles down the stair to a waiting Lady Plumtree. The ladies share some "girl talk" about the bedrooms, the staff, and gossip about Colonel Buckshot. Lady Plumtree is delighted with the house and asks Agnes to stay on as their maid. Lady Plumtree leaves to retrieve luggage. As Ollie and Lord Plumtree discuss the rent and the wages of the staff, the real Colonel returns to fetch his bow and arrows, to find the disorder that had ensued after his departure. Ollie continues his masquerade as Colonel Buckshot to the real colonel, until he sees the portrait on the wall of the real owner. Ollie finally recognizes him in the picture behind him as Colonel Buckshot who bagged a wildebeest. Ollie then shoves Colonel Buckshot out the front door. Colonel Buckshot summons the police who have been surrounding the house throughout. Buckshot chases Lord Plumtree out with a handgun. When Buckshot and the police force open the door to the den, they are greeted by the sight of Ollie and Stan as the front and back end of a wildebeest. The wildebeest butts their pursuers out of the way, and runs outside. A chase ensues. The wildebeest knocks over riders of a tandem bicycle to make their escape. They ride into a railroad tunnel and encounter a train, which removes the policemen's uniforms. The front and back of the wildebeest emerge riding unicycles.
