Ray Milland plays an uncredited part first as Clark Gable's sparring partner in the boxing scene; as Clark Gable leaves, he calls Ray a "big gorilla." Secondly, Ray Milland plays the church usher seating people when Marion Davies enters the church for Sunday service.
Reviewers were mixed in their appraisal of Clark Gable and Marion Davies' performances: some wrote that they were both miscast, while others praised them. The film was not financially successful, but Gable's next film, Red Dust, (see below) in which he played a more typical "rough" character, was one of his most successful.
According to the introduction of the film by Ben Mankiewicz on Turner Classic Movies, Clark Gable did not want to do this picture. He relented after William Randolph Hearst, owner of Cosmopolitan Productions, promised him a new car, an extra $10,000, and to help renegotiate his contract with MGM.
