• Grandpa Storr : Oh, hello. I'll be over at your house in twenty minutes for dinner.

  Guy Crane : Fine.

  [Jokingly] 

  Guy Crane : That'll give me a chance to count the silver and get all the best things hid away.

• Grandpa Storr : [to Beatrice and Thelma]  It was natural for a louse to be a louse. I'm just trying to determine your species.

• Grandpa Storr : A woman's heart don't ache so badly if her hands are busy.

  Louise Storr : I never knew there was anyone in the world quite as grand as you, Grandpa.

• Beatrice Storr : Father, we'd been glad to cook whatever you wanted.

  Grandpa Storr : Liver and bacon! Bacon and eggs! Ham and eggs! Beef steak and potatoes. Pork chops. Lamb chops! Sausages! That's the kind of breakfast I like. And plenty of good hot coffee.

• Grandpa Storr : When I was in the Civil War we had meat - you had to hold it with a bayonet to fry it. It was so rotten it'd get up and walk away from ya.

• Grandpa Storr : Women again?

  Simon Bates : I'm dyin'! But, I don't care.

  Grandpa Storr : You keep up that shameless life of lechery and corn whisky, you really will be dyin'.

• Grandpa Storr : She's likely to be pretty. If I see you lookin' her way, twice, I'll blow your head off the next minute.

  Simon Bates : I know that.

• Grandpa Storr : I like cigarettes, 'cause you can throw 'em away when you get through with them. The only trouble is they burn down to your whiskers so quick.

• Grandpa Storr : From where we're standing here, down there to the river, is the old Storr place. My father settled in 1830. I remember the little Indian girl. We used to play down there in that grove. A squaw spanked me once. Once!

• Grandpa Storr : Have you ever read Gray's "Elegy"?

  Louise Storr : Mmm-hmmm. "Full many a flow'r is born to blush unseen."

  Grandpa Storr : That's it. Well, Gray might just as well as made it poison ivy.

• Grandpa Storr : The farm's part of our minds, become part of our bodies, now. You're gonna be here the rest of your life, Louise. You can plan on that. Count on it!

  Louise Storr : Maybe. But, I was born back there.

  Louise Storr : You were born back *here* - a 100 years ago. Them other people weren't. Little town folks: the cat, the pig and the donkey.

  Grandpa Storr : Perhaps you're right. You know, when I came here I thought - well, I felt as if I were returning to where I belong.

• Grandpa Storr : Sometimes I think the big things that are past are more real than the little things that are right here.

• Simon Bates : Hey, you're goin' loopy, if you ask me.

  Grandpa Storr : Well, nobody ain't asked you.
