Not a cartoon to be bugged by
TheLittleSongbird18 September 2017
Now a fairly obscure character, Buddy was the second Warner Brothers Looney Tunes character, after Bosko and followed by Beans the Cat. Buddy didn't last long, being retired in 1935 after 23 cartoons starting in 1933.

The Buddy cartoons are intriguing to see how very early Looney Tunes characters, before the iconic ones with far more interesting and funnier personalities were introduced, fared. His filmography is very much variable, most ranging between mediocre and decent though 'Buddy's Adventures' is one of the rare very good Buddy cartoons. Ranking 'Buddy's Bug Hunt', it's one of his decent efforts and one of his better ones too.

'Buddy's Bug Hunt' does more right than it does wrong. The animation is nicely drawn and detailed with the black and white looking crisp and some of the visuals in the dream scenes are among the most imaginative in a Buddy cartoon. Even better is the very energetic and cleverly orchestrated music score. Music played a big part in the Buddy cartoons and it was essential for it to work.

The gags are beautifully timed and funnier than they usually are in a typical Buddy cartoon, which at their best usually tend to be amusing if unimaginative. There is a lot of energy here and the supporting insect characters are fun. The voice acting is good.

On the other hand, the "it's all a dream" concept is not a new one, and it has been done more inventively elsewhere. Although the energy in the dream scenes is absolutely great, 'Buddy's Bug Hunt' has a bit of a slow start and when the dream scenes kick in when the cartoon comes to life properly.

While a little more compelling in personality than he tends to be, Buddy is still on the bland side for a lead character.

All in all, decent cartoon and not one to be bugged by. 7/10 Bethany Cox

This is a seminal cartoon for anyone who's ever eaten a BLT sandwich . . .
oscaralbert17 February 2017
Warning: Spoilers
. . . as the newly installed U.S. Czar Vlad "Mad Dog" Putin has decided to discontinue American Tomato Production, meaning that those of us who love Bacon, Lettuce, and Tomato sandwiches will have to make do with mere BL's in the future, as our "T's" will disappear. When you watch BUDDY'S BUG HUNT, think of the bugs tormenting the down-sized Buddy as the mobs of Red Commie KGB agents and operatives whom Putin's Party now has mucking around is every aspect of Life in the USA. Think of the Frog singing to Buddy as Putin himself. This Evil Amphibian, backed by an insect chorus, sings to us from 4:23 through 4:46 "We've got you where we want you, and we want you where we've got you: you have tormented us up to now--we're going to have our revenge; The crowd is going to be aroused, you're at our mercy now; Bumba Bumba Bumba Bumba, you'll get yours today!"

Warner Bros. always prophetic Looney Tuners are prognosticating back in the mid-1930s about the fact the Putin's puppet Rump squelched any protection by the government for the Rusty Patched Bumblebee (which is where the line "Bumba Bumba Bumba Bumba" comes in--surely mystifying contemporary audiences watching BUDDY'S BUG HUNT), forbidding a last-ditch effort to save the only pollinator of our Beloved Tomato Plants from total extinction at the hands of Putin's best buddy, U.S. Secretary of State Rex "Exxon Valdez" Tillerson and his fellow pipeline-laying "Drill baby drill!!" mad Frackers now given free range by Putin to decimate the American environment and food stock so that Our Homeland is just as much of a barren Chernobyl-like wasteland as Putin's own Russia. All of this has been reported by the many outlets of True Factual News (such as USA Today on Feb. 16, 2017), as opposed to the fake falsehoods peddled at the for-profit chain of charter brain-washing shacks run by Putin's Miseducation Secretary Betsy DeVos.

One can view Buddy's predicament here as akin to the fate facing Rump, when America finally comes to Her senses over the Horrors emanating from his under-sized paws, many of which can NEVER be undone! Once the rusty patched bumblebees are extinct, they're gone forever, along with tomatoes and our national sandwich, the Beloved BLT! It's unlikely that we'll need to wait for the Slow Wheels of Justice, in the form of torturous Impeachment Hearings and a drawn-out Resignation (with Rump inevitably asking his adviser\daughter Iwanna, "Can I pardon myself?"). If a lone wolf such as the woman who got North Korean Madman Dim Kim Slim's half-brother at that airport this week doesn't do the trick, Rump probably will be cornered in a place like the train station in Fyodor Dostoevsky's BROTHERS KARAMAZOV and have his diminutive gonads detached like the would-be mob controller standing on the barrel top when it gives way.
