Campus Subversives Attack Football!
lchadbou-326-2659230 January 2021
Fighting Youth is an amusing if silly example, there were a couple of others like Red Salute, of a mid 1930s anxiety about the infiltration of radicals into American life, well before the more pronounced panic of the McCarthy era. In this case rich girl Ann Sheridan, with that mischievous glint in her eye already, heads a youth group which decides to go after football as a manifestation of business exploitation After her subversives have weakened the team, Charles Wilson plays the tough new coach brought in to improve the playing. The word Communist wasn't mentioned in the version I saw but one character is later revealed to be a Russian agent. There's also a funny scene where good old Andy Devine is put to work cleaning a restaurant window but breaks it.
