Won't You Come Home, Billie Bailey
boblipton15 August 2013
Billie Bailey sings the title song soapily and Joe Reichman and his orchestra perform it in this slightly below par but still amusing Fleischer Screen Song.

In this one, the animated portion is a series of black-out gags set up as a newsreel, which was a prime way for the Fleischers and Termite Terrace to deal with random gag ideas that didn't quite fit into their story lines. Given the pacing of the individual sequences, there was plenty of time for me to see the capper gag of each sequence coming, even though, as usual, Dave Fleischer and his staff strewed plenty of smaller gags within each.

There's also a very brief appearance of Wiffle-Piffle, the Fleischers' answer to Schlesinger's Egghead, or perhaps George Rowe. Not that anyone was asking.

I Can't Escape from You (1936)

** 1/2 (out of 4)

The Fleischer Studio produced a number of these animated short films where the "bouncing ball" would have audience members singing together. As was the case with other entries in this series from 1936, this one here features several brief animated jokes including one dealing with a road hog as well as another dealing with an annoying type of person we've all ran into. From here we get Joe Reichman and vocalist Billie Bailey doing the title song. After she starts the song off the bouncing ball then comes into play. If you're a fan of the series then you'll certainly enjoy this one as the same format is followed here. From all of the animated clips, there's no question that the road hog was the funniest of the bunch. The title song was well-performed and added a nice touch.
