A middle-aged but still very beautiful, dark-haired woman sits before a mirror admiring her reflection as she puts on the finishing touches of makeup. Through the mirror's view we see a young boy's eyes piercing the reflection of the woman. Noticing his glance, she playfully scolds the child, stating that he knows better than to watch her while she is applying her makeup. The child contests that he isn't looking at her but at her reflection, a disparity the woman rejects. For her, the act of applying makeup is a literal transformation -- a practice her son, as we learn, is visibly irritated by. Their conversation could be read literally, a simple anecdote that establishes their mother-son relationship. Upon further consideration, it is no coincidence...

How would you program this year's newest, most interesting films into double features with movies of the past you saw in 2015?Looking back over the year at what films moved and impressed us, it is clear that watching old films is a crucial part of making new films meaningful. Thus, the annual tradition of our end of year poll, which calls upon our writers to pick both a new and an old film: they were challenged to choose a new film they saw in 2015—in theatres or at a festival—and creatively pair it with an old film they also saw in 2015 to create a unique double feature. All the contributors were given the option to write some text explaining their 2015 fantasy double feature. What's more, each writer was given the option to list more pairings, with or without explanation, as further imaginative film programming we'd be lucky to catch...

Through the mirror of my mind / Time after time, I see reflections of you and me / Reflections of the way life used to be / Reflections of the love you took from me • “Reflections,” by Lamont Dozier, Brian Holland, and Eddie Holland, recorded by Diana Ross and the Supremes, 1967, Motown Records
Like every other art form, comics – or more accurately, the creators of comics – reflect the times in which they live.
I started reading comics in the Silver Age, when superheroes were manufactured like products in factories, conveyed along conveyor belts of post-World War II American middle-class morality, which ensured that everything but the packaging was the same. Each hero kept their true nature hidden behind a pair of glasses, or a secretary’s typewriter, or a desk in a high school classroom. Each hero lived a lonely life, because to reveal their secret would only endanger their loved one. And...

Chicago – “Mirror Mirror” reimagines the tale of Snow White as one of dictatorial corruption and the little David taking down the big Goliath. It’s an interesting way to interpret the material and made more so by Tarsem Singh’s incredibly strong visual eye. Small problem — while he’s a visual master, he’s not a strong storyteller and “Mirror Mirror” needed a more capable narrative thread. As is, it’s a tonal mess, part slapstick, part fable, part comedy, part romance, and part total nonsense. It looks great, especially on Blu-ray, and has some decent ideas carried by a strong young cast, but the negatives outweigh the positives in this fractured reflection.
Rating: 2.0/5.0
Lily Collins plays Snow White, Armie Hammer her Prince, and Julia Roberts the evil Queen in this bizarre filtering of “Snow White” through a unique viewpoint. The financial motivations behind “Mirror Mirror” are obvious. Tim Burton...

Blu-ray Review
Mirror Mirror
Directed by: Tarsem Singh
Cast: Julia Roberts, Lily Collins, Armie Hammer, Nathan Lane
Running Time: 1 hr 46 mins
Rating: PG
Due Out: June 26, 2012
Plot: After the King failed to return from battle, the evil Queen (Roberts) took control of the kingdom. Ten years later, the King’s daughter, Snow White (Collins), is turning 18 and the Queen decides it’s time to be rid of her. With the help of a prince (Hammer) and seven dwarfs, Snow White tries to take down the Queen and restore the kingdom to its former glory.
Who’S It For? There is stuff here that could appeal to all ages, but the silly tone might be off-putting to some. Still, between the fairy tale origins, glorious craft work, and some fun action and comedy, Mirror Mirror is worth watching.

Blu-ray & DVD Release Date: June 26, 2012
Price: DVD $29.98, Blu-ray $39.99
Studio: 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment
Julia Roberts (Eat Pray Love) shows her evil side in Mirror Mirror, the hit movie based on the Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs fairy tale.
The family fantasy stars Roberts as The Queen, who ruthlessly rules her captured kingdom. Lily Collins (Priest) plays Snow White, who joins forces with seven rebel dwarfs to reclaim her birthright and win her prince (Armie Hammer, J. Edgar).
Nathan Lane (The Lion King), Sean Bean (TV’s Game of Thrones) and Mare Winningham (TV’s Hatfields & McCoys) also are in the film’s cast.
Much like director Tarsem Singh’s Immortals, the PG-rated Mirror Mirror got mixed reviews from critics and moviegoers. But the movie still grossed $135.4 million when it was in theaters.
Both the DVD and Blu-ray contain special features. On the DVD are two featurettes:

Most formats take a while to come into their own. Who can remember the first horrible DVDs? The first discs were defined by a paucity of special features, with most blurbs proudly boasting “Scene Access” and “Interactive Menus” as the carrot for you to give us those old VHS tapes. Then there was the packaging itself which came, depending on the studio, in a variety of horrible designs (the cardboard ones proffered by Warner Brothers stand out as especially awful in my memory). Disney were likewise slow to live up to recognise the potential of the new format, with the studio’s first releases – which, as it happens, included Alice in Wonderland – resolutely vanilla. Though you always sensed the marketing wing was holding back the good stuff for the fourth or fifth re-issue a couple of years down the line.

Alice In Wonderland (1961)60th Anniversary Edition (Blu-Ray & DVD)Walt Disney Home Entertainment1951/Rated G/Running Time 75 minsList Price $39.99 – Now AvailableThere is not really a lot that can be said about Alice In Wonderland that most of you will not already know. Walt Disney's seventh feature-length animated film is a loose adaptation of Lewis Carroll's two novels “Alice's Adventures in Wonderland” and “Through the Looking Glass”. Quite possibly the most surreal Disney film of its time, it essentially attempts to cram a vast amount of material into its 75-minute running time, with at least partial success. The film takes the form of a number of set-pieces, most of them highly farcical, each completed under the supervision of a different sequence director. While this method of filmmaking undoubtedly led to each team striving to make their own sequence the best it could possibly be, it results in a very episodic structure,...

Buried
Intense & claustrophobic, the film pulls you in right from the start. Ryan Reynolds does an astounding job, giving what I believe to be the performance of his career. While the whole film takes place inside of a coffin, it remains thrilling & exciting to watch the entire time.
The film has a definite Hitchcockian feel to it, and much like it has been said before by other people who have watched the film, Rodrigo Cortés has made a film this is just as astounding as Alfred Hitchcok would have conceived, had he been given this script while he was alive.
I say that this film is definitely worth a viewing, especially if you like Ryan Reynolds. His fantastic acting skills are on full display for you during each and every minute of the picture. It’s a shame he wasn’t nominated for any acting awards for this film, because I believe he earned one.

The best thing about last year's "Alice in Wonderland" being a huge hit for Disney is that Disney fans can finally see the original "Alice in Wonderland" on Blu-ray. For its 60th Anniversary, Walt Disney's 13th animated classic is hitting hi-def and digital download.
"Alice in Wonderland" is arriving on Blu-ray and DVD combo packs and also as standard and high-definition movie downloads. It's the first time that the film, with classic Disney characters Alice, Queen of Hearts, the White Rabbit and more, arrives on both formats.
Complete with the classic 1951 animated film, whose re-mastered picture and sound are sure to be worth the purchase alone, the film is of course packed to the brims with special features.
The Blu-ray set also includes "Through the Keyhole: A Companion's Guide to Wonderland" which refers to Lewis Carroll's classic literature, the ability to watch the films in Disney View, games, Mickey Mouse...
