The steward sees the new moon over his left shoulder, a sign of good luck. He then turns around the coins in his pocket to increase his luck. An old superstition which has largely now disappeared.
This film was a "quota quickie", a type of low-cost British film, typically commissioned by American distributors active in the UK. They had to fulfill a quota set by the Cinematograph Films Act 1927, that British cinemas had to display a set amount of British films in addition to imported foreign films. Filling the quota with low-budget films allowed various companies to then import big-budget films from the United States.
