not because the print is poor, Germanwarfilm.com already stated that and sold it a lower price. This version of Bovery the story and photography keeps a little distant from the character. Pola Negri was in her forties and the truth is that this role did not fit her due to her age.Bovery was suppose to be in her twenties. Dr Bovery is a fat middle age character, played by character actor stalwart Aribert Wascher. This middle age version just doesn't the original novel. In this version when both are coming back from a trip ,it looks like that they had been married for years. This is an Emma with middle age crazy, or are they doing what they did with Joan Crawford, when she had to take her daughters place in the soap opera as the world turns?.So they try to avoid a lot of close ups so her middle age won't show? Pola? The Young one is Rudolph.Played by infamous Ferdidnand Merian,.It looks more that Rudolph could be her younger brother or cousin.Mother love? In this version they don't have any children neither.Emma has an affair first with some other young man, Leon,I think?, played by Leon Dupuls. He's then called by his father to leave the small town This is when Rudolph shows up.They do show Bovery buying stuff, but it look like she isn't buying a lot like the original did.Red headed actress ,Carla Rust, plays one of the cities character, but she should have played Bovery instead. This version is a bit slow moving too. Now heres the good side. Pola Negris good dramatic acting . Ariber Wascher excels in a older Charles.Ferdinand role as Rudolph is pretty good.If the print was better ,you notice good photography. But my guess may be due to the original negative or print gone, may be?The concept is entertaining. An Emma who is bored of her husband after so many years and wants to see if she is still desirable. Now when the bills are due. The Merchants threatens her to tell her husband. She goes to a drug store and gets poison. The differences is that as Ari is kneeling at her side,as she's dying , no priest is doing the last minute rights .Was that the subtle propaganda? It still worth a buy. at Germanwarfilms.com 01/17/12
