Aleksis Kivi's Nummisuutarit- great play, great movie
Petey-1014 October 2008
Esko is going to marry Kreeta. He goes to her house with Mikko Vilkastus only to find out they're celebrating Kreeta's wedding with someone else.Esko becomes mad and even touches booze for the first time. And we all know what happens to people when they get drunk.Even I do, I who don't drink.Aleksis Kivi (1834-1872), who is regarded as a father of our national literature, wrote Nummisuutarit in 1864.Kivi was undervalued when he was living but has now the value he deserves.Esko is a fantastic, tragicomic figure. In this movie, directed by Wilho Ilmari and written by Toivo Särkkä, he's played by Unto Salminen. And what a great job he does! The brilliant Joel Rinne plays Mikko Vilkastus. The praised Aku Korhonen plays Esko's father, Topias Tuomaanpoika. The most wonderful Siiri Angerkoski plays the mother Martta.Siiri's real life husband Kaarlo Angerkoski plays Teemu, viulunsoittaja.Oke Tuuri is Iivari, Esko's brother.Miss Europe 1934, Ester Toivonen is Kreeta.Laila Rihte is Jaana.Jalmari Rinne does the role of Karri, talonisäntä.Eino Jurkka plays Sepeteus, lukkari.Nummisuutarit (1938) works as a movie just like it works as a play.
